The Christian Far-Right
How powerful are they as a lobby?

In terms of sheer numbers as a percentage of the population?

If Bush were to win in 2004, is there a chance of the United States being hijacked by fundamentalists? Could we possibly become a theocracy over the next decade?

1. Very
especially as they have systematically infiltrated government at many levels - from school boards on up. They control a lot of the "discussion" as well as many forums for such "discussion".

2. Let's hope Judge Roy Moore runs for prez...
He's threatening to run as an independent. If he does, he'll peel the fundie vote away from Shrub.

Run, Roy! Run!!!

5. They are proud of their "stealth" tactics --
-- but local cleverness aside, they are unstable and disordered people -- essentially treasonous jackals who labor to oppose the spirit of constitutional freedoms.

Roy Moore is a marquee example, but sadly, there are many others operating below radar.

 I know there are many more religious wing-nuts out there but we are making some headway.

11. NO NO NO!
It will never happen. God opposed the Pround and their vain conceits.

If ever there was an opportunity to do so... it would have happened after 9/11. And it did not happen. It won't inspite of the evil empir of Ashcroft/Robertson and Bush.

17. Yes, but it accelerated the process...
and it seems to be gaining momentum, which is my concern. I am wondering when we are going to reach "peak fundamentalism" in this country.

If it gets much worse, I don't think I can ever leave NYC again.

12. Up to 35 million....
I would say that up to 35 million would fall under this category. They (meaning its leaders) are not Christian, but a cult based on a theology that mixes Levitical law with Social Darwinism-pretty confusing yet potent stuff.

Since they are among the only people who offer "Christian radio" programs for free, a lot of people have gotten sucked in.

16. So guess we could safely say that 35 million
is a large group, but hardly a majority. However they seem to vote monolithically. Still, they are outnumbered.

We can only hope that as they become more aggressive that they turn off more people than they recruit.

13. There are many laws on the books today still that are based on
religous thought, not what's best for everyone in the community and country. Go spend a week in Utah and you will discover what an American theocracy could be like. Book and music stores push LDS self help and inspiriational literature and Christian music and practice censorship. Many authors and artists are conveniently not stocked.

Especially listen to the radio talk shows, the ones where people call in and it's really scary how brainwashed the majority of people. The few who dare speak up are shut off or made to feel as if they don't know what they are talking about.

But what am I talking about? The whole country has already turned into Utah. Sorry I don't mean to offend ordinary Utahens, but I found your state truly scary. It's probably fine if you are in sync, but not for the rest of us, who would like to have a beer or glass of wine at a sidewalk cafe in sight of everyone and who want to be able to chose what we will listen to or read.

15. Hard to say......
They are very pro-Bush yet they (the extremists) feel that federal headship should come first. Basically the women in the family don't vote and let the head of household vote for the unit.

19. So how does that work?
My husband and I try to be on the same page so we don't cancel out each others votes, but there are some very lengthy arguments at times until we agree. I see nothing wrong with this, however, if the man as head of the household makes up his mind for everyone, then I see everything wrong with it.

27. reminds me of a funny story.....
My neighbors were - husband/republican wife/democrat. They agreed they cancelled out each others votes and agreed not to vote. While he/republican was at work, she/democrat ran out and voted. Every election day she would say, "see how dumb republicans are"

Hahahahaha

check out this website:

http://www.TheocracyWatch.org/

It spells out how the Religious Right has managed to take over the GOP.

Did you know that every one of the GOP's congressional leadership are fundies of the Christian Coalition type?
