Powell Attacks National Guard

In the midst of Democrats' attacks on President Bush's military
service, Secretary of State Colin Powell has found himself with the
unpleasant task of having to defend his boss against remarks made by
... himself.

If only Powell could have taken a peek into the future back in 1995,
when he wrote his best-selling biography, "My American Journey," he
might have been more cautious in revealing his thoughts on the
National Guard and Reserves in the Vietnam era.

"I am angry that so many of the sons of the powerful and well- placed ... managed to wangle slots in Reserve and National Guard units," Powell wrote.

The Air National Guard's official history includes the statement "The Reserves and the Guard acquired reputations as draft havens for relatively affluent young white men."
