Man these guys know how to lie. I guess they figure that a big lie is as easy to pull off as a small one, so why not?

2. Does somebody have the graphic file
of his paperwork that specifically has the box checked NOT to send him to Vietnam?

I'm sure I wasn't hallucinating that. Could someone re-post that so we have the ammunition to fight yet another lie.

7. An ex Air Force friend of mine is crazy mad about "*"
AWOL business. He said that there isn't a guy in the military he doesn't remember who he served with and most military guys would say the same thing. He was also saying, he is a pilot, that physicals, dental appointments and things like that are not optional. He said that they'll say your physical is tomorrow at 0800, end of story.
One other thing, if shrub had put in his time he definitely would have made captain.

They look like micrographs of rocks/minerals to me. That's where you slice a rock real thin and mount it, shine normal and polarized light through it, to see what crystals it is made of.

10. Here's how the lie works
Edited on Mon Feb-23-04 09:13 AM by Az
Bush signs up for military duty. That is he volunteers his name into the service. Daddy pulls some strings and gets him assigned to the guard in the champaigne division. Thus baby bush gets to say he volunteered and yet at no time was ever in any danger of having to do any work.

17. Bush did volunteer for an assignment that could have meant Viet Nam
Edited on Mon Feb-23-04 10:36 AM by JohnyCanuck
However he knew chances he would be picked to go were slim and none.

Furthermore, when he signed up for the Guard, he checked a box saying "Do not volunteer for overseas service." Later, he made a perfunctory application to transfer to a program called "Palace Alert", which dispatched F-102 pilots to Europe or the Far East -- and just occasionally Vietnam -- for 3 or 6 month assignments. But Bush was not nearly qualified, as he must have known, and was immediately turned down, and the F-102 not used overseas after June, 1970 in any case. And, as noted above, his story also changed on why he refused to take a medical exam -- including a drug test - in 1972. (The refusal ended Bush's flying career.) His staff first claimed that he didn't take the physical because he was in Alabama and his personal physician was in Houston. But flight physicals can be administered only by certified Air Force flight surgeons, and there were surgeons assigned at the time to Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, where Bush was living. His staff now admits that that explanation was "wrong", without saying where it came from or what the real reason was. Draft & National Guard Sources

I think this is what the rethugs are using to say that Bush volunteered for Viet Nam

21. I thought he only "inquired" about the Palace Alert Program
My understanding was Bush only inquired about this program and the person he talked to about it convinced him that he wasn't qualified for it so he did not follow up. This is all kind of meaningless anyway. it is clear that the young Bush was in his playboy mode and that means he was just experimenting with different ideas. He signed up for the TANG saying he wanted to make a career of flying planes but when it came time to make the committment to training to fly a more modern plane he opted out - so his "priorities had changed" I guess you could say. I don't think there is much point in the Dems making an issue out of this unless Bush chooses to go after Kerry's service and later protest of the war. Then his service should be mentioned in the context of Kerry's service and let the voters decide who served their country more honorably. However if Pubs are going to lie about it the lies should be corrected.

The proper pronunciation, phonetically, is LIE - ER, with accent on the first syllable.

The alternate pronciation is ID - EE - IT. First syllable accent.

But of course, he knew that. If there had been any ANG units still flying the WWII-vintage P-51, he would have gone there instead. Perfect way to stay out of the "action", get trained in an obsolete aircraft....

30. I assumed he was referring to the form that W signed
assigning him to that fake unit in Colorado as punishment for going AWOL. People in the fake unit could be called up to go to Viet Nam (of course George H.W. Bush's son would never ever be called up no matter what).

Sorry I don't have a link, but I have seen the form with his signature online.

trained to fly them. They are interceptors and since there were no enemy bombers to intercept they were withdrawn from Vietnam before Bush went into the Guard.

If he were to have gone to Vietnam he would have had to been trained on another plane or do something other than fly. Also he lost his flight status.

I think that even if he did volunteer for Vietnam, there wasn't a snow ball's chance in hell that he would have had to go.
