Garry Trudeau nails the &*(^ out of it.

This is why I never accepted the humanitarian rationalization for the invasion. The Bush administration will never let them have truly free elections, so the on possible alternative is decades of war and bloodshed.

1. The HEART of the issue

The various factions inside Iraq and the Middle East hate EACH OTHER slightly less than they hate Israel and America!!!!

You cannot FORCE someone to adopt democracy. We Americans are simply unwilling to directly commit the amazingly vicious and inhumane methods (Saddam Hussein) necessary to forge a nation out of disparate tribes.

Ultimately, it's best to either not get involved or TAKE SIDES. Otherwise you'll be standing in between people eager to KILL YOU so they can get on with killing EACH OTHER!!!!!

3. can we please dispense with the whole "democracy" charade now?
please?

that was just one of the marketing tools used in the invasion runup, and afterwards, to justify our presence, once the WMD lies were put to rest.

they could care LESS about democracy taking root there, anymore than they cared about democracy springing to life in Guatemala, El Salvado, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Iran in 1953, Dominican Republic, Vietnam.....need I continue?

remember the Office of Public Diplomacy, instituted under Reagan, and resurrected under this junta? know what they were up to then and now?
or the NED? talk about Orwellian

Indeed, almost every time we've insinuated ourselves in other nations' business, it's been a process of intervention AGAINST democracy/duly elected governmnents

this is one of the most cynical ploys EVER foisted upon the body politic

democracy? give me a break
