12. He did.
And was very insistent on the fact that the results were not the results of a scientific poll.

4. I voted yes
I don't think I would have voted yes before I saw all of the gay couples lined up in San Francisco.

I grew up in a very conservative area of the country and I have come to understand something about gays only gradually.

Now I believe that being gay is genetic just as skin color, hair color, and eye color are. So if blue-eyed and brown-eyed people can marry, I guess gays should be able to marry too.

The mayor is making the same argument that the Mass Supreme Court made and that is discrimination.

Edited for spacebar malfunctions.

That made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. Every time I hear someone say something like that, I realize that my efforts to help create change are indeed useful,( and while at times my efforts can feel as rewarding as banging my head into a brick wall) and gives me strength to continue fighting on for change

5. Voted 'yes.'
Wolf Blitzer's photo above the poll question reminded me of how strange some of CNN's reporters are.

I'm absolutely convinced that a majority of them are shape-shifting aliens.

It's just a hunch.

8. Yes
. . .whatever marry means. People should be able to "marry" anyone or anything they want. Marry your cat or your motorbike if you want to. It's nobody else's business.

The furor the repugs hope to create with this issue is a digression from all the flack they are now having to deal with.

9. It's this kind of discourse ...

It's this kind of discourse that makes lefties seem like fruitcakes to midwesterners.

A LOT of people have a "higher" view of what the institution is intended for. Such viewpoints only makes it seem that you don't GIVE A FUCK about the nature of the institution in the first place. It make it seem like you DON'T respect it.

Therefore, if that institution were extended to same-sex couples, you wouldn't respect it. And others could lose respect for "marriage classic".

I'd be careful about the rhetoric I used. You are only undermining your cause.

25. Good point...
I get so irritated when I hear the argument (stated by supposedly intelligent people) that if gays are allowed to marry then threesomes will demand the right to marry, pedophiles will demand the right to marry children, farmers will demand the right to marry their sheep!

Such fear-mongering!

10. Go Vote! Tell those who want to keep Rights away from all Americans...
that we don't agree! Although, we are a Republic, which means that the majority does not get to decide what is allowed, (many people seem to think if the majority doesn't want something, that should be it.....That's MOB RULE, it is not true) we are a Nation of Laws. When the people demanded that Catholics and Protestants should be able to marry, when Bi-Racial marriage was mentioned, a majority of the people were offened.....But it happened based on laws!

There is nothing in the Constitution or Bill of Rights that says that I have a right not be offended! Freedom is the first Human Right!

18. Don't forget, you can say it with flowers too! Hard for media to ignore
Flowers From the Heartland. What a great way to show support and wish people a happy life together. If you can spare a little $$, call a florist in S.F. and order flowers to be given to a same sex couple waiting to wed. Tell them you wish them well. Show America that it is OK to honor love and diversity and courage.

Flower power, 2004

20. not my idea, hundreds of people have sent flowers
It started on Tuesday when a couple of gentlemen in MN did it and sent emails out. Since then, the florists in SF have been very busy! Folks all over the US and Canada have let others know that they are happy for couples who can make this public committment.

http://www.startribune.com/stories/462/4621033.html

<snip> On the Web, Scanlan saw photos of couples lined up around the block, of people hugging, crying. "It looked so beautiful," he said. "Part of me wanted to be there, but I don't know anyone and thought, 'Well, what if I just sent flowers?' "

<snip> Especially because bouquets run more than $50. To enable those of more modest means to take part, a Canadian man, Darren Barefoot, set up a PayPal account. (www.darrenbarefoot.com/flowers/) Within 24 hours, he raised almost $3,000 and made arrangements with volunteers in San Francisco to deliver bouquets.

<snip> Phil and Randi Reitan of Eden Prairie also sent flowers, and forwarded the e-mail to a hundred other friends. Their son Jake is gay, and they hope someday to be able to celebrate his marriage in a Minnesota church.

sometimes, when the world gets so ugly it breaks your heart, it helps to stop and smell the flowers.

26. Went back to add this note
"How can someone else's committed love to another human being threaten my own marriage? The answer is that it cannot. When I see the love in the eyes of these couples (on tv) it brings tears to mine. All joy to them. Am I religious? Yes I am--and my religion is inclusive of every good-hearted human, regardless. We are all children of the Sacred One."

Results now are:
Yes 77% 3192 votes
No 23% 963 votes
Total: 4155 votes

23. So you speak for all of DU?
Edited on Mon Feb-23-04 12:46 AM by Woodstock
Some Democrats are in favor of civil unions but not gay marriage.

My personal opinon is the ONLY thing government should be involved with is civil unions - and these should be open to gay and straight.

Since the argument for marriage is that it's a religious ceremony, then only churches should do it.

First, he/she never presumed to speak for you or anyome else. He/she merely encouraged you to vote in a poll. Nothing more. Vote as you see fit.

Second of all, I am an Atheist. Are you telling me I can't get married either?
