My heart goes out to you. Not knowing what your faith is nor is it any of my business I would like you to know that your son will be in my families prayers everynite. If you would like to share your sons name with me I can add it to a list that some friends and I have that we include in our own personal prayers(We are not an organized religious group) We were football moms who have stuck together in friendship and every once in awhile one of us has someone we know in crisis. I will work even harder to help get our boys and girls home safe by staying vocal about this illegal war. As moms your nightmare is our greatest fear. Like eleny said you will never be alone, many of us will always be here for you whether here at DU or PM.

3. We must focus on getting him back ASAP
The sooner we get Bush out of office -- impeach the bastard!! He LIED and LIED! The sooner we can get our young men and women home, and quiet the fears of everyone in the world of what the psychopaths in the Bush administration are plotting next, the better, and the safer we will all be.

Thinking of you and your son.

FWIW, I'm including a song in my revue for the military families. YOUR posts are a big reason I was inspired to write it.

it will be a 'mother's lament' over the LIES that are sending their children into this senseless quagmire.

take care.

I pray for his safety and quick return!!

How does you stepson feel about his service, the whole Iraq fiasco, the boy king, the neo-cons, etc? Does he share your views or has he been brainwashed?

Please keep us up to date both on his status as well as his thoughts and observations about what is REALLY going on over there.

Peace and Love!

We did everything we could to keep him here...he knows its an illegal fruadulent occupation, but he went anyway. Hes afraid of the military. He listened to my husbands ex father in law Im starting to find out , who is a freeper who never even saw battle and was never in the service.

15. I would imagine that in his situation
He would HAVE to maintain some sort of shell of ignorance or at least ambivalence to perform his duties and keep from going crazy.

Does his grandpa not realize that even if he is blessed to get through without injury he will in all probability see and hear things that will change him for life? Dark nasty things that are part of the package of a war. What a fucking inconsiderate asswipe!

I pray the damage is minimal mentally and zero physically. If you can ever offer us any insights he relates to you that you are comfortable sharing I would be eager to hear them. Maybe in that small way he can be a pipeline and reinforce our efforts.

Did your stepson really have a choice though? Just wondering.

BTW: have you considered attending the Chicago DU meetup on Sunday, March 7th? I have only been to one and there were only 3 others there, flush_bush, prolesunited and robbien. this one sounds like it wil draw at least a dozen or so. I am sure EVERYONE would love to give you and Mr. Mari a hug, sounds like you need it!

BTW II: My son turned 18 in Jan. and is ripe pickings for an upcoming draft. We need to STOP this crap!!!

47. little thats not going to happen in this town
Edited on Sun Feb-22-04 10:38 AM by Mari333
A funny thing happens in a GOP town, such as this..I stick out like a sore thumb..they dont like peace activists here . especially ones who are the parents of a military soldier in Iraq and are against the bu$h administration. I dont even go into town unless I have to. Theres one other woman here whose daughter is in Iraq, and she and I are bonding. Shes absolutely insane with fear, and she gets the same crap I do when we stand at the peace vigil on Fridays
"But he signed uppppp!"
"Shame on you , you should be proud of him blah blah blah blah"
They run, however, when I ask them if they are willing to send their kids.
Oh well, Ive been thru this before. When tragedy strikes in a home, it seperates the wheat from the chaff of who your friends are and who they are not..and theres not any left now..they dont like to see me and my husband cry..I guess thats why DU and www.mfso.org are so important now. Extended family I guess.
Gotta make family where you can.
PS..sorry I was so angry on some of my posts yesterday. I was a mess.

Edited on Sat Feb-21-04 03:56 PM by steviet_2003
July 1 is the date that the admin set for handing over titular control from bremer to their sElected Iraqi puppet gov't.

Our troops are going to be there for many years to prop up whatever banana republic we install and to guard the local natural resources. The military bases that have been, and are being built, are permanent!!

26. I agree
Just seems like alg bought the propoganda that "we want to turn over iraq to the iraqi's by the end of june" bullshit. Many in this country believe that means our troops come home, I was just trying to point this out.

That "we" (read admin) are transferring power in that time frame has very little effect on our troops. It is bait and switch and very little will change except for titles. Our troops will still be on the front line and stationed in iraq until we get a REAL plan for regime change from the neocons to the iraqis/UN.

Dennis has a plan, I have my own thoughts but in EVERY case I agree, BRING THEM HOME NOW!!!! If we cede control and honestly ask for international/UN assistance on their terms with a genuine, sincere goal of allowing iraqia control of their own land it CAN be done. But, not until.

44. Bush has no choice politically BUT to start pulling troops...
...in July. They know that if the casualty counts continue at the same rate (which it will, unfortunately) it will negatively affect the outcome of the election for Bush. He has no choice BUT to start getting some of our troops out of Iraq before the election. That's why I hope Mari's stepson is one of the first out.

This isn't propaganda, it's political expediency...

or, will less targets mean less casualties?

i don't think he can pull troops until they are replaced by a larger UN force.

48. Whatever it takes, he can't continue to have troops killed...
...in Iraq. With support for the war at an all-time low (and most likely to go lower, once people start talking about the OSP more), the casualty counts will no longer be acceptable to anyone.

The perception of a growing majority of Americans is that this war is unnecessary. Whatever it takes (including grovelling to the UN to get multinational peacekeepers on the ground in Iraq), Shrub has to limit the casualties or he can kiss the WH goodbye, for sure.

50. But that defeats his whole purpose
Edited on Sun Feb-22-04 11:09 AM by steviet_2003
The reason to go in was to control the oil and set up permanent bases. I also don't think they necessarily WANT UN troops there, then they'd have to deal with diplomacy, old europe and all that crap that could keep them from having free reign. I believe that their hope is to have iraqi troops ready to take over much of the heavy lifting under the control of their puppets but per the PNAC blueprint, our bases are permanent to make sure the puppets do our bidding and have a base to ensure the rest of the reqion knows we, and our weapons, are close by.

When the admin talks about handing over control at the end of June, they are talking STRICTLY about who has legal control, bremer, our waspy regent will hand over the keys to some brown skinned regent/puppet or group. They have NEVER said we are pulling out. Yes, we may lessen our presence somewhat but with the place about to blow into a civil war they cannot afford to lose control.

on edit: Forgetting the thread start and purpose, I don't mean to sound overly pessimistic Mari. Just pointing up how crucial I feel it is to get the cabal OUT of office so someone can get cede real control to the UN and get real help in there so we can get our troops home! I don't believe it will happen under shrubbie unless all hell breaks loose, they have planned this takeover for over a decade now, they will not give it up easily.

53. But none of it matters if he loses the election...
Trust me, Job 1 for the Bush admin is to get re-elected. He tried the PNAC plan for Iraq and failed miserably. He has little choice anymore but to cut-and-run. Troop losses are quickly becoming unacceptable to the electorate because more and more people are seeing the Iraq conflict as unnecessary.

Mari, if he said he was gay would they send him home?? I don't keep up with this stuff too closely -- military rules for getting shipped home, I mean -- but I know they USED to kick you out for being gay. Does he have a male friend in his unit who also wants to get home? They could arrange to get caught tongue-kissing or something.

Please don't be offended -- I'm very serious. I'm not gay, but if they tried to draft 25 year old women like me for a bullshit "war" like this, I'd find a female friend and, hell, I don't know, go downtown and try to get a marriage license or something. Use their homophobia against them.

I feel so much sympathy and pain for what your son and your family are going through -- I am so sorry. I wish I could help.

I also asked him if I could break his trigger hand, he said no
I offered him a lawyer
offered to send him overseas to hide
offered him to say NO to them and get dishonourable discharge, jail is better then being dead, he said no
offered everything, had him call the GI Objectors hotline, he did but then he wavered and said "Im just going, f*ck it."
We couldnt stand in the doorway and force him to stay, but now his emails sound more desperate, fake brave face , I think its hitting him as to how bad it really is , versus what he thought would happen.
I have to make sure we have a therapist ready for him when he returns, I have to believe he will return .
I also told my husband "Lets bribe a political heavyweight to get him out"
My husband is more ethical then me and said no.
I said "Ya but Bu$h did it! why not bribe a politician?"
Oh well. Im not ethical I guess when it comes to getting him out and home safe..in a way, I hope he breaks his leg this week and they send him home..Im serious...better to come home with one broken leg, then dead.

His whole unit detests Bush. Half his unit got out before he got sent over. Hes 21. They dont listen to anyone. One cannot stand in the door and make them stay. I didnt raise him, his incredibly stupid mother did. My husband left her after 13 years of watching her fuck up her kids.
He came into my life 8 years ago, and moved in with us when he was 18. Hes a good kid, but I didnt have much time to help him learn the same things I taught my sons..which was that the US military complex is full of shit and they lie.
In the meantime, I think hes finding out NOW how much they lied to him as he sits in Baghdad, facing who knows fucking what.

61. How do they lie?
Everyone knows what the military is about, if necessary fighting and dying for your country. I have said on here before I'm for the war against terrorism, the attacks on Americans has been going on for thirty years and it is about time we started doing something about it. I was a military policeman in Europe for twenty years and I have seen the results of terrorists bombs more times then I care to remember. One thing that strikes me as very strange on DU is that everybody says this is an illegal war. Back in the 60's and 70's everyone said Vietnam was an Illegal war. Now Bush or any politician that managed to keep out of that war is considered scum, now you wanted your son to do the same thing they did and you consider it the right thing to do. Sorry if I'm confused.

don't get me wrong. I have sons in the military one in the 101 ABN and one on the Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine Tennessee, currently underwater somewhere in the world. I would have to guess they gave me about as much choice in their decisions as your son gave you.

68. Maybe you know about soldiers; but I think you know zilch about mothers
I think that this is an awful time to be trying to debate. And telling her she 'put too much pressure on him' is just flat out insensitive and rude.

This thread quite obviously is not the place for a debate about whether or not Bush or recruiters lie, or about grounds for the war. The thread is about a member of our community letting the community know what is happening with her son. It's p-e-r-s-o-n-a-l.

57. His orders said one year
But my husband and I know perfectly well it will be longer if bu$h gets in again
and one year is too long...he thinks he will be in for only 10 more months..I tried to tell him, no dear, the military doesnt care who they use or how long they use you and they will keep you for as long as they want because war is a business, and you are being used as a pawn..
he actually believes them when they say only a year.
Again, in my life, its mom VS the patriarchal establishment from Hell.
My other sons listened to me and said no way would they ever go..I didnt raise Michael however...his mother did, hes my stepson..and she voted for Bu$h and demanded that he adhere to her belief system. I can only hope he comes back , and have to be logical about it and allow reason to prevail when the heavy duty emotions kick in.
My 3 sons in Seattle love him dearly, so they will be sending him tons of packages..my oldest son barely got OUT of the Guard after they tried to send him on Stop Loss..thanks to DU friends he got out..
Hell, they are sending everyone who can breathe over there..they are depserate..they dont care about the kids a whit.

58. Is there a way that we can send care packages to him
I've wanted to send packages for a while now, but haven't gotten around to actually doing it... I wondered if there was a way that we DU- types can support each other's family members and friends of the family members. I want them to know that there are lots of people back at home who care, and that they are NOT just another soldier, or a pawn, but a real human being- yes, with a name. People with families (define 'family' how you may) that is afraid to pick up the paper, or turn on the news for fear of bad news. I want THESE people- the families, to hear that their son or daughter, or wife or husband got a care package from a complete stranger when they hear from their in-theater soldier.

Sorry for rambling- I want so much to write, but lack the words to do so correctly.
