Bush critic's speech canceled (Kevin Phillips, in Atlanta)
From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Plenty more of the same to come, for those who dare to disagree with Bush and other GOP heavy hitters (including the Georgia governor, apparently).

http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/atlanta/0204/21phillips.html

Kevin Phillips, author of a best-selling book that is harshly critical of President Bush, said Friday that the Atlanta History Center had withdrawn an invitation for him to speak next Wednesday for political reasons. . .

Phillips noted that Tommy Hills, Gov. Sonny Perdue's chief financial officer, is chairman of the board of the History Center and declared that the cancellation "doesn't sound like a complete coincidence."
Phillips, a political theorist who originated Richard Nixon's Southern strategy in the 1960s, wrote an op-ed piece for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution last year critical of Republican economic policies and labeled Perdue as one of the new "political flagbearers of the Old Confederacy."

"I wasn't a great fan of Perdue," Phillips said.

"My book has become extremely controversial," he said. "Three of seven book reviews have used the word 'devastating' ," he said. "It doesn't surprise me that people connected with the in Atlanta or Washington are not interested in publicity for this book."

4. Kevin Phillips
Represents Republicanism with a human face.
If he ran for President, I would have to seriously consider voting for him.
In fact, if it were a Phillips vs Lieberman race, I would vote for a Republican presidential candidate for the first time in my life. Ok, I'd drink myself sick afterwards, but I would do it.

5. it's one or two on the bestseller lists, right?
and how often have you seen him on TV?

contrast that with the ubiquity of slime like Gary Aldrich, when he was pimping that carboard-bound roll of TP about Clinton's Christmas tree, Babs (the human ashtray) Olson, Coulter, Laura Ingraham, when they were purveying their trash. you couldn't change channels fast enough to get them off the screen

but Phillips is, of course, pretty much NOWHERE to be seen with his book

must be that darn ol liberal media at work again

this story is beyond outrageous, though.

how often is this going to be happening?
meanwhile, a new book by Carl Cannon, about Rove, is due out.

can't wait to see what that's going to be like

he was on CSPAN the other day, at the Newseum, with Walter Pincus, and some guy from the NYT, making the AMAZING statement that in EVERY SINGLE speech by dumbo during the war run up (he says he kept track), EVERY speech, mind you, chimp mentioned several other reasons why invasion was necessary, along with the WMD BS. His clear implication was that equal weight was given to the other factors, fear-mongering assertions like "mushroom clouds" notwithstanding.

Cannon writes for the conservative, make that wingnut, National Journal, and is the son of famed Reagan biographer, make that apologist, Lou Cannon.

7. It is completely unbalanced

I think it is because they think that Phillips is not a sound bite sided book, or a 15 second spot fluffy interview.

But have seen a couple of recent apperences on cable, and damn. Devastating is an understatement. I thought it impossible by nature that a self identified Republican could despise Bush as much as I.

The average interviewer on CNN or FAUX could not begin to work on Phillips' level, sadly. Though I would pay cash money to see a debate between Novak, or Wolf and Phillips on the Bush administration.

22. It's not a sound-bite sided book.
It's fairly heavy mental fodder, tracing all the connections of the Bush family to shadowy arms-barons etc. with much manipulation.

I got it out of the library, was fascinated by what I did read, but didn't have the time or patience to read the whole thing page-by-page.
Me bad. The O'Neill book was much more accessible, even though it goes into economic matters in some depth. I had them checked out at the same time; there was a long waiting list, and I couldn't read them both.

Still, I think both author's TV appearances have been largely confined to C-SPAN. Am I right?

10. Perle and Frum made the rounds when their book of doom...
...was released last month. Perle even did the Daily Show (Jon & the Prince of Darkness in the same frame was a ghastly sight - kept yelling at the TV, "Run, Jon!!!"). No sign of Kevin Phillips, though. No sign of Emo Phillips, either...

13. also have that show on tape, but couldn't bring myself to watch it
no drugs

and I spoke to David Frum on the radio about his fatuous hagiography of dumbo, told him the part about him being a decisive leader was very very amusing, seeing as how the only decision he ever made was what color of socks to put on in the morning

I also said if listeners wanted to get a realistic appraisal of dumbo's persona, they should read the Bush Dyslexicon, in which the cretin in chief is revealed to be unable to form coherent sentences, except when he's salivating over executing somebody, or invading something, when his true nature is revealed, and he can express himself without fear of his subconscious tripping him up

6. I hope it helps Kevin Phillips sell more books....
His "Dynasty" book is..."devastating" to the BFEE. On a C-SPAN book show, he kept asking "WHY aren't reporters investigating this??"

Indeed, Kevin. Indeed.

16. When Phillips was on Washington Journal a wingnut called in
and asked him if he had ever talked to the chimp. His answer was brilliant and devastating : No, because it would be a waste of time. The chimp has nothing intelligent to say. It was a great moment.

18. Listen To Kevin Phillips at Berkley - Democracy Now Link
http://www.democracynow.org/index.pl?issue=20040217

"A Multigenerational Family of Fibbers" - Fmr. Top Republican Strategist Examines the History of the Bush Family

We hear a speech by Kevin Phillips, a former top Republican strategist, who was generally acknowledged as the Republican party's principal electoral theoretician after Ronald Reagan's election in 1980. His latest book, "American Dynasty: Aristocracy, Fortune and the Politics of Deceit in the House of Bush" examines how the Bush family has been consolidating its power for four generations.

Wonderful speech -

24. You know I listened to the guy on the Democracy Now, but wondered.........
what was up with this guy 20 years ago or so. I became political after finding out about that effing traitor Olie North. If one had a teenage son that borrowed the car, got drunk and wrecked it. Would you be happy?

What after he wrecked the car and lied about his doings, said he was sorry and would never do it again but also would like to ask to borrow the keys to your other car so he could take his girl friend out on very important date. Would you give him the keys?

Here we are today having the same type of problems, Liars and more Liars. So now I should be happy, give him a hug, hand him the keys and say be more careful next time somebody could get hurt that way. If I thought otherwise would I be a careful person or just a vindictive son of a bitch if I didn't give him the keys. The answer is both, and I still am not giving them keys up

Melanie - Brand New Key Lyrics

I rode my bicycle past your window last night
I roller skated to your door at daylight
It almost seems like you're avoiding me
I'm okay alone, but you got something I need

Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I think that we should get together and try them out you see
I been looking around awhile
You got something for me
Oh! I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key

I ride my bike, I roller skate, don't drive no car
Don't go too fast, but I go pretty far
For somebody who don't drive
I been all around the world
Some people say, I done all right for a girl
(snip)

20. If you haven't read the book, please do,
this book is absolutely awesome and I can see why they don't want it there. Shows * for what he really is. A big dumb idiot with puppet strings. Especially liked the part about the fundamentalists and how they are helping him, even though it was a very scary read.

21. I don't know if they're going to re-air it, but C-Span 2 showed
a panel at the Museum of American History. The auditorium was huge and filled to overflowing. It was in D.C. on President's Day, a panel about lesser-known Presidents who deserve to be re-evaluated. I almost didn't watch it, but it was AMAZING.

The moderator was Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. And the panel was John Siegenthaler, Hans Louis Trefousse (prof. emeritus, Brooklyn College), Kevin Phillips and John Dean. The first 2 are self-identified Democrats, and the last 2 Republicans.

Well. They were all talking about Presidents, of course. And every single one of them (all 5) went out of his way to SLAM *Bush. The first time, the whole audience gasped and then exploded in applause (with a few angry *-loyalists looking angry). The consensus among this very distinguished group of historians was that *Bush will go down in history as the worst "president" ever. A pretty powerful statement. Try to see it if you can. (The discussions of Polk, Hays, McKinley and Harding were also interesting, of course.)

Here's the info on the panel from c-span.org

Members of a President’s Day panel talked about the presidential biographies they wrote for Times Books’ American Presidents series. Mr. Schlesinger, the general editor of the series, moderated the panel. Mr. Phillips wrote William McKinley. Mr. Dean is the author of Warren G. Harding. Mr. Trefousse wrote Rutherford B. Hayes. Mr. Seigenthaler is the author of James K. Polk. Following prepared remarks, the panelists responded to questions from the audience.
