gay marriage and religion: What a good lawyer should say...
In the bible Jesus says that nothing you can take into your body can corrupt your soul, this passage is meant to forgive food taboos mentioned in the old testament. One could also argue that it forgives homosexuality in men, which is mentioned in the same passages as the food taboos. Jesus never was quoted as saying that homosexuality was a sin, his deciple Paul decided to add that little bit. A good lawyer could say that a supreme court ammendment against homosexuality is a violation of religious freedom. Not to mention an ammendment would also completely contradict the idea of a right to happiness. My thought is that the religious right is trying to decide which religions our country recognizes, many native american tribes had terms for homosexuals, and they were not considered bad or sinful, in plenty of cases men could marry other men and the relationship was seen as a "marriage" where land and valuables were rightfully the property of the spouse.

Any good lawyer should be pounding the books now, there are planty of completely logical arguements that the fundies can not say a damn thing about, including saying that marriage is religious, we should point out that plenty of religions in world history have respected gay marriage, just b/c some parts of chirstianity are against it does not mean that this idea in religion is unanimous.

As a strait woman with many gay friends my heart breaks to see their plight trivialized and to see them openly discriminated against, you have my support and my love.

1. Where are these native american rites and rituals?

I'd love to see more about this - Talk about the founding Fathers!

I just did the Google, I had NO idea about this. And I'm something like a 32nd Cherokee. Wow, what an arguement.

2. If you Google Native Americans and berdache you will find
lots of info. The term berdache is going out of fashion (not very pc) but it will be the easiest search term to start with.

the plains indians in the mid-west for sure, an example is the tribe in the movie Little Big Man, I can not for the life of me remember WTF tribes, maybe the apatche? But I do know for a fact that some native American tribes respected gay marriage, although I do not remember their terms for it. ARG I am going to have to do some research, this arguement does have legs though, their are tribes all over the world though that have religiously respected gay marriage.
