Defense of Marriage Act
Are Bu$h and his followers going to outlaw divorce?

Wouldn't that be the "ultimate" defense?
Especially with the highest divorce group being: Christians.

1. A Two-Tired Marriage System
There already exists a 2 tiered marriage system: civil and religious.
It works well, just look at the Catholic church. A Catholic may marry in the church, get a civil divorce (not recognized by the church) and marry again in a civil ceremony.

If any religious group is opposed to same-sex marriage, they can simply refuse to recognize that union within the context of the church.

2. Yes, but you can't be a Catholic after that
and your children will be considered "bastards" and not entitled to be baptized or partake of the other privileges of mother church.

If you divorce, you can kiss your relationship with the Catholic Church goodbye.

3. Not the point
You can still get a civil marriage over the objections of the religion in question.

4. The children are no longer judged
That has not been the case for decades, at least, not in official church law. The remarried loses his/her standing, true.

5. oh, goody, I can go back now
NOT.

Is France still under the interdict that was imposed during the 14th century, or has that been rescinded as well?

It's so hard to keep up with current events in the church.

7. John Kerry?
Does Kerry receive communion, first as a divorce, and second for supporting a woman's right to choose?

9. Depends
Did he get an annullment? Between him and the church.

As for the second, depends on the bishopric and whether the priest presiding accepts that sort of injuncture. Most, I suspect, would ignore such a mix of religion and politics.

6. That has changed...
and your children will be considered "bastards" and not entitled to be baptized or partake of the other privileges of mother church.

I think the Catholics would consider you "illegitimate parents" but would not consider your offspring "illegitimate children."

Used to be, though, that children born outside of a marriage could not become priests or nuns. I don't think they still do even that these days.

(Not a few adopted adults found out that they were adopted when they wanted to be priests or nuns in times past.)

13. Not true
my MIL, divorced and is Catholic. Her priest told her she absolutely could take communion and he suggested that she marry her live in boyfriend as it would help her in her persuit of an annulment of her first marriage. I doubt she will get the annulment. She was married for 25 years and had two children with the man, but anything is possible.

She is still a Catholic and can receives the sacraments. Her second marriage was a protestant service and I suspect if she receives an annulment she would re-marry her current husband in the Catholic church.

8. have to outlaw adultery too
If you really want to defend marriage with legislation.

Also, outlaw marriages performed on television shows.

I don't really propose any of this. Neither prohibition would work. It just goes to show how ridiculous it is for the government to try to micromanage social issues with marriage legislation.

10. If they're so interested in preserving marriage
there is no way in hell you can do that through legislation.

Perhaps the Repukes should preserve their own marriages first.
