Corporation as Psychopath (movie & book review)
Published on Wednesday, February 18, 2004 by CommonDreams.org
Corporation as Psychopath
by Russell Mokhiber and Robert Weissman

People ask -- Rob, Russell, the world is going to hell in a handbasket. What can we do about it?

We say -- read one book, see one movie.

Unfortunately, the movie and the book are available now only in Canada.

But wait -- before you head north of the border -- they will be available here in a month or so.

And believe us, it is worth the wait. (Full disclosure -- our work -- the Top 100 Corporate Criminals of the 1990s -- is featured in the movie.)

The book is titled: The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power. It is by Joel Bakan (Free Press, 2004).

The movie is called: The Corporation. It is by Mark Achbar, Jennifer Abbott, and Joel Bakan.

We've seen an advance copy of the movie.

We're read an advance copy of the book.

And here's our review:

Scrap the civics curricula in your schools, if they exist.

Cancel your cable TV subscriptions.

Call your friends, your enemies and your family.

Get your hands on a copy of this movie and a copy of this book.

Read the book. Discuss it. Dissect it. Rip it apart.

Watch the movie. Show it to your children. Show it to your right-wing relatives. Show it to everyone. Organize a party around it. Then organize another.

3. spent the last 40"
Reading the site, the article, etc. First, it's a captivating concept: the corporation as psychopath. And before anyone complains that corporations can't be measured by the standards that people are, then let me ask why corporations are granted personhood? If they are legally persons, then why are they allowed to behave like psychopaths when persons are punished for doing so?

Second, a concept like this could indeed revolutionize the socio-political landscape.

This is exciting and well worth the time spent reading.

4. I never could under stand why they were a person either.
My husband worked for a big corp and he had a hard time as they would say this is a lie but tell your workers this. Yar and it was an oil company. I will be looking for this book and TV movie and if it can make money you can be sure it will be out in the good old USA.I believe in business but I also think it must not be laissie faire any more than I thought unions should be run with out over sight by some one out side of the union.

6. Way good! Saw it this weekend ...
I was pleasantly surprised to recognize a college classmate's name in the credits.

Anyway -- I'm definitely going back -- they cover a lot of ground in the film, though they keep things moving so you don't realize it's longer than the standard feature.
