Is this Rick Perry gay story going to break or not?
Edited on Thu Feb-19-04 03:59 PM by bluestateguy
For those of you not familliar, that's the story circulating on the Internet about Rick Perry supposedly being found in bed with SecState Geoffrey Connor, and that Anita Perry was about to file for divorce.

This story will not be heard, much less taken seriously by the people of Texas and this country until it is picked up by a major newspaper or major TV network. Most Americans still do not get most of thier news via the Internet, and many folks don't consider a story legitimate until it is on TV or the major newspapers.

Is this story going to break where it counts (print and TV), or is it doomed to a life of Internet lore? I still remember that ridiculous "story" on Tom Flocco's website that Katherine Harris had been killed in a plane crash :eyes:.

edit: the SecState's name is Geoffrey Connor, not Ken Connor. Oops.

1. Has his wife filed for divorce yet?
That would be a pretty strong indication that there might be some truth to it...

2. how much truth do you think there is to it?
I'm one of those people who don't take things too seriously until they're published by a reputable source. ie--NOT Drudge, lol.

If there's meat behind this, Republican or not, Perry's going down. Texans don't like none of that buttlovin'. Tolerance for other sexual viewpoints is pretty low--as is tolerance for cheating.

10. Obviously you dont spend to much time on Cedar Springs in Dallas....
Nice neiborhoods, gay owned and operated shops...and of course a GREAT collection of themed night clubs.

.....and dont even get me started on San Antonio, woo hoo, military gay boy party town. Texas may not like it, but its full of em!

And all those adult stores littering the freeways in Austin...do they only allow unmarried people in there?

12. I'm not talking about social liberals
I'm talking about the majority of the conservatives in this state: intolerant as hell. I'm in Houston, where there's a thriving gay community as well... but it's small compared to the majority opinion, unfortunately. Most Texans aren't as tolerant as, say, most Californians. Right-to-privacy doesn't include bedroom antics.

3. I don't think it will break until there's a divorce filed...and/or...
...some substantive corrborative evidence. I'm sure news organizations are digging around, but there's nothing yet.

6. From what I hear...

Anita and the kids are holed up in West Texas with Repugs frantically pleading with her to stay the course and not file for divorce from Governor Goodhair.

That's off a couple of local message boards. I do not attest to the truthfulness of the account, though.

However, IF the allegations are true, then this would be a pretty logical step in the chain of events.

7. dang....I was laughing at the post in the original thread which
stated Mrs. Goodhair had retained the services of Becky Beaver. Guess I'll have to wait for the headline "Beaver cites irreconcilable differences in Perry divorce".

8. I got a little bit more to add
I was at a Democratic party meetup event here in Austin, TX last night and this rumor was swirling everywhere. There was even a big hint from the TX Democratic Party Chairman Charles Soechting that Perry was going to be in a world of trouble soon. My understanding is that Anita Perry has not filed yet (people are watching both Harris and Haskell county for filings). Most likely scenario is that Anita is going to take Perry to the cleaners in exchange for silence. You have to understand that they have 2 kids and she does not want to drag her family through the mud. That said though, you still will have an ugly divorce with plenty of rumors to go around. Also as far at the rupukes, well they just can't have this at all. Too many people already know. At the very least we think that Sec of State, Geoffrey S. Connor will suddenly leave his post due to family reasons. You know the standard excuse "more time to spend with my family". This won't happen until after the March 9th primary. Just so the repuke family value thing doesn't screw up the vote.

For photos of the paramour go to http://www.sos.state.tx.us/about/sosbio.shtml

Also check out the Burnt Organe Report blog which I have followed for a bit this summer during redistricting.

Byron LaMasters, a 21-year-old student at the University of Texas at Austin and former president of the University Democrats Club, says at http://www.burntorangereport.com/archives/001085.html that he spoke to a GOP staffer at the Texas Capitol, who said regarding the Perry-Connor sex scandal, "All hell is about to break loose."

15. see mine of yesterday
I'm too lazy to find it on this slow dial-up while traveling but...the Dem major hitter I spoke to en route to El Paso yesterday said:
"they will shut Anita up" and today's comment from an equally well placed person said: "if they don't shut her up, their world is likely to explode but they will try to discredit and dishonor her in their fury" (he meant not only the party but the electorate.)

Basically, and this is pretty much a situation where Mrs. Perry will find herself the object of some pretty vicious fictional smearing if she doesn't play along. This is an OPENLY discussed issue in political circles at the moment---they ONLY "denial" being issued is "oh, he wouldn't do that! Its a Democrat smear!" Notice: No denial at all.

BTW, if the Perry family is out in "west Texas" anywhere from Abilene or Lubbock west I've not yet heard of it. I'm positioned pretty well to have but...that doesn't mean she isn't out here.

Let us put it this way: I'm very happy I'm not Mrs. Perry at the moment (more than usual anyway) if this is, as I suspect, a story that is more true than false.

27. maybe Mrs. Perry could fly to NY and publically meet with a writer...
Sharon Bush did that and it got the whole divorce moving a lot quicker...

also, Mrs. Perry might want to get to a writer's office in NY before she gets 'baxtered'.....might save her life....

9. There's something wrong with the cast:
Geoffrey S. Connor is the Texas Secretary of State.

Ken Connor was the president of the Family Research Council.

So, it sounds like only a rumor.

You are expecting people who don't see anything particularly wrong with homosexuality to rigorously investigate and pursue a rumor of homosexuality.

14. See my post at dailykos for those who can't get enough gossip
My Diary entry:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2004/2/19/17614/0503

Here's a snippet...

WARNING: More completely unsubstantiated stuff is here

This is firsthand news from a well-connected lawyer I know in Austin:

--Anita Perry has hired Becky Beaver, the most notorious ballbreaker divorce attorney in Austin, to represent her. She will be filing for divorce on grounds of adultery, naturally.

--Sec. of State Jeff Connor (Gov. Perry's lover) used to work at Akin Gump (very large law firm) and was well-known among his colleagues as being gay. They were surprised that Perry picked him for the position given his sexual orientation, in fact. Now, of course, they understand why.

and this...

I heard back from both . One refused to comment, the other said they're well aware of the story but don't want to print anything on it until they get some sort of official confirmation, since the governor's office is "vigorously denying" the whole affair right now.

Another nugget from kirker of the Data Lounge

I was debating posting this in one of the existing threads, but it's pretty significant news so I figured it deserved its own: the national media *is* hot on the trail of the Perry story. Dave McNeely, the Austin American-Statesman's political reporter, has been contacted in the past couple of days by both the NY Times and NPR about it, hoping he could provide them with info.

Looks like this one's gonna explode verrrry soon.

BTW, That's the first mention I've seen of national media. I'd be really surprised if NPR calling about it is true.

Understand, this is just another gossip piece, but it's an authenticated pseudonym 'kirker' that has been relaying this stuff. If he's wrong he won't be able to post as that pseudonym again (not that it means much, but he seems to have been using it for a while).

Again, grossly speculative, but I've included it for those who can't get enough gossip.

:hi:

Thanks for the post. To me it's more than the gossip angle, it's just the instant karma these pukes deserve for being such hypocrites. It would be so sweet just prove them to be so hypocritical. And the added exposure of Tom DeLay's running roughshod over the Governor during re-districting will be seen in a different light. One spotlight they do not want on them.

ha ha
