NYT: Bush political schedule trumping concern for future of Iraq?
New York Times:

NEWS ANALYSIS: THE TRANSFER
U.S. Presidential Politics and Self-Rule for Iraqis
By STEVEN R. WEISMAN

Published: February 19, 2004

WASHINGTON, Feb. 18 — In the Bush administration, it is considered heresy to suggest postponing the planned return of sovereignty to Iraq. Turning over control by June 30, administration officials say, is crucial to assuaging Iraqi distress over living under American occupation.

Yet in recent weeks, diplomats and even some in the administration have begun to worry that the date reflects more concern for American politics than Iraqi democracy. Their fear is that an untested government taking power on June 30 may not be strong enough to withstand the pressures bearing down on it.

"When we went into Iraq, our plan was to have a government, build a structure and write a constitution that would be a source of longterm stability," said an administration official. "Now that's out the window."

Many in the administration say that while they have no proof that the urgency to install a government is politically motivated, it feels to them like part of a White House plan to permit President Bush to run for re-election while taking credit for establishing self-rule in Iraq.

2. Anyone suprised that their No. 1 Priority is re-election
Shit, Bush has been campaigning ever since Jan of 2001.

9/11 was their first big convention.

They don't care if because of them a civil war breaks out in Iraq. They have the money, they have the approval, and everyone in this country is too fucking stupid to pay attention to what is going on once CNN and Faux stop reporting the eventual bloodbath that will ensue.

The administration is too busy lying about jobs and how great the economy is.

4. Another one from the "Duh" files...

Of COURSE the political schedule is framing what the Chimpministration is doing in Iraq.

As an added bonus for them, Rummy and Wolfie get to throw the whole mess onto Powell on 7/1.

Not that any of this will stop the rapid slide into civil war in Iraq after 7/1. Great job, Chimpy!

5. How will June 30 be different than now?
Bush and Cheney have done little but fundraise for the past eighteen months. Everything they do is about the election. The only attention they give to Iraq now is to try to ignore the deaths and cover up Halliburton war profiteering.
