DU needs to put a stop to the NASCAR bashing
This is incredulous to me. My father once ran for public office back in the 1960s. He lost by a dozen votes. Here we are making fun of millions of potential voters after losing the last election by what was the equivalent of my father losing by twelve votes. Will you people ever learn? If Al Gore and the Democratic Party could have turned just 1% of the gun owners or NASCAR dads in two states, we wouldn't have the problems we have today.

We need every vote we can muster, and these virulent attacks on NASCAR fans and southerners have got to stop!

P.S. Most NASCAR drivers are no longer southerners. Most NASCAR fans are no longer southerners. In case you turkeys didn't know, this is 2004 - not 1974!!!!!

1. I dont dislike NASCAR people...

It is the notion that they are somehow more "patriotic" than other Americans that pisses me off.

24. It ain't the people....NASCAR as an
activity to me bites. It's boring, inane, repetitive and pointless.
That's just me. Not everybody likes golf or the NFL. I'm entitled to my opinion. Monkeynuts making a grandstanding, vote grabbing appearance at the Daytona didn't help much. A good baha rally or university solar car race is more my style.

Son you're gonna drive me to drinkin'
If you don't stop driving that hot rod Lincoln.
Beep Beep and Zoom Zoom.

3. you deserve a nobel peace prize
I find nascar personally boring as hell. But I wouldn't root for an accident to cheer me up. So I avoid nascar races.

But some people I know actually like them. Why should I discriminate against them just because they like something I'm not interested in?

Seriously, NASCAR is boring, but hey, the real outrage is politicians like Bush using it as a campaign prop...

9. As they say in the south
"Boy, this is serus buznez. Ain't no room for funnin' in politics."

I was born in Alabama and have lived here for 52 of my 57 years. If just two or three major newspapers ran a headline that said, "Major Demo Web Site Makes Fun Of NASCAR Fans And Southerners", it would probably turn about 10,000 votes over to the repubs overnight. I'm sure this is probably true in many other states. Hell, California has something like 2 million NASCAR fans. Steal as many as you can, and leave the rest alone.

minutes of NASCAR. But for a site where tolerance is valued, there does seem to be a strong dislike of the drivers and spectators here.
Must be a cultural distaste.(wonder if that is another example of elitism?)

14. Not elitism, characteristic of being human
As long as human beings divide into arbitrary sub-groups (many MANY more than "Republicans" "Democrats" or "NASCAR Dads", they will cling together and snipe and or poke fun at the other arbitrary sub-groups.

People who've never met each other before and would have no reason to either like or dislike each other will do so at the drop of the hat over being in a different arbitrary sub-group.

No doubt the Freepers have similar threads over "sissy" stuff like ballet or Broadway.

No doubt the Videogame Boards mock the dice-rolling Roleplaying Boards.

And so forth...

Kurt Vonnegut called them "granfaloons". I would really recommend his book Cat's Cradle in which these ideas and so much more are fleshed out.

I would just like for them to WAKE UP and realize how much of a limited resource they're burning up - for a so-called 'sport'. I just don't get the mentality.

15. I want to outsource George Bush
If I owned this site, I would do a little "cleansing". IOW, get rid of these cowboys who are on here strictly to have a little fun or play their moronic little mind games.

How will the baseball Buckeyes do this year? Archie Griffin told a friend of mine that his trip with your baseball team to Auburn was a terrific experience. He loved the southern hospitality. Hope we can meet again.

17. Things were better,
The owners have tried to keep things civil here. The political season has fired people with great passion. Many fine posters have fled the mayhem. I am hoping things will get better after the primaries are over. The "BooHoo" posts have been insufferable lately. I am old enough to know that one should never really trust any politician.

This has been a great site for news and still is ,so give it a chance. You will better for it.

It's a frigging sport, guys. Let's keep that in mind. All sorts of people probably enjoy NASCAR, just as all sorts of people enjoy football, baseball, basketball, etc.

Who gives a shit. If you like NASCAR, more power to ya. Enjoy the races.

22. "Oh, don't bash the Swing Voters!!"
Edited on Thu Feb-19-04 07:42 AM by BiggJawn
Screw the "soccer moms", "NASCAR dads" and the rest of the mythical "swing voters".

If only we this, and if only we that.

Hey, I'd be willing bet that a lot of paedophiles, child molester, and wife beaters vote, too. What say we start kissing their asses to get their votes, too?

So your dad lost by 12 votes. Did he alienate a segment of the electorate? (with 12 votes, it must have been a really small group, like, oh, wife swappers?) Or was he trying to be "All things to All People" and still lost?

This is really a dishonest strategy when you look at it. people are distilled down to mere votes in a tally. If that's the way it needs to be, have you ever thought of how to rouse the biggest voting block in the nation, the DEAD? I'm talking gettin' out the GRAVEYARD VOTE, like they used to do in Chicago.

And on top of everything else, who are YOU to sit there and try to dictate how I think? That's what all this "don't bash this group, we need their votes" crap amounts to, an attempt to enforce GroupThink.

27. NASCAR is mindboggeling to me
typically american.

its gluttonous use of fuel
more noise pollution than a Brittney Spears concert
lord knows HOW many hundreds of gallons of spilled fuel.
round and round they go :eyes:
burning rubber (as if the gas fumes aren't enough)

i watched about an hour and a half last weekend (for the first time)

crowd shots: white.
drivers: white.
owners: white.

no thanks. i won't bash them but will fail to understand them.

PEACE

28. Who cares what is said on DU?
It's an obscure discussion board that doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. If people here want to apply stereo-types and deride things they don't personally appreciate, what does it really matter?

It cracks me up how folks think DU is the thing all look at to judge Democrats. Not hardly!

at the Daytona(?). The old adage, "Cutting your nose off to spite your face", comes to mind. There's too much broad brushing of this group or that, and not enough amplifying of the positives of the Dems.
It's foolish to waste breath and precious air-time dissing any group that contains potential ABB voters.
