Powell Says Administration Has 'No Enthusiasm' to to Send Troops to Haiti
http://abcnews.go.com/wire/World/ap20040217_1514.html

WASHINGTON Feb. 17 — With officials alert for a potential refugee crisis, Secretary of State Colin Powell said Tuesday the administration had "no enthusiasm" for using U.S. forces to quell unrest in Haiti.

He added that some nations may be willing to send peacekeepers once peace is restored.

The White House said it was up to the Haitian people to decide whether embattled President Jean-Bertrand Aristide should remain in power. But Powell dismissed suggestions from some of Aristide's opponents that he step down.

2. Stability In The Backyard
Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 08:40 PM by ThomWV
You would think that political stability in our own backyard would be part of a greater security plan for the fuggin' country. Guess not. Want to speculate as to why we don't step in and throw an immediate military wet blanket on revolution and bloodshed? Here's one for you - we don't have enough military uncommitted at this time to quell the riot. That's what I think - we're not strong engough to put down the riots.

8. The CIA is probably sponsoring the Hiatian rebels
Haiti is looked at by U.S. business interests as a source of cheap labor. Because of this "natural resource", the U.S. has a vested interest in who Hiati's President is. Aristide (a liberal priest) was elected instead of the U.S. puppet Marc Bazin in a popular election. Since the Haiti's president is not who the U.S. wants AND is in our "traditinal sphere of influence", the CIA is probably trying to undermine him by sponsoring the rebels. This is why we are not sending in troops.

9. The CIA is doing just fine
Why should they send troops? Of course you know it was planned.

Aristide must have not wanted to do what the IMF wanted.
