Lawyer Demands SF Mayor's Arrest
(San Francisco, California) A law firm with ties to conservative religious groups is calling for the arrest of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.

The American Family Association Center for Law and Policy said Newsom's decision to allow same-sex couples to marry "not only violated civil law, but also criminal law."

"In light of these alarming developments, we call upon you as the people’s Governor of the State of California to immediately call for the arrest of Mayor Newsom and his removal from office," Crampton's letter says. "We also ask that you move to arrest and remove from office all other city officials participating in the issuance of the falsified licenses and bogus ceremonies."

The demand came as lawyers for two conservative groups headed to separate courtrooms seeking an injunction to prevent the city from issuing any more licenses to same-sex couples and to quash those licenses already granted.

1. arresting Newsom
would be the best thing that ever happened to him, AND to the right-to-marry movement.

15. I hope they don't. I remember when they killed a mayor and others
over about the same thing.

21. I was just thinking of those murders
the other day--George Moscone and Harvey Milk and how a distraught Dianne Feinstein had to announce their death in the city hall hallway to a bunch of frenetic reporters.
That was such an awful day in the Bay Area....

4. Man...some people just hate seeing other people happy.
"How dare they enjoy themselves?" As if gays and lesbians are supposed to spend their lives regretting what they are.

6. "...spend their lives regretting what they are"
That is precisely it. Best, of course, for them to express this regret via monetary offerings in their local church collection-plate, for maximum forgiveness potential

:grr:

Newsom should issue an executive order outlawing divorce, and see how fast these snoop-minded buttinskis change their mind!

7. Newsom is a damn fine Democrat
I vaguely remember some talk when he ran against the Green candidate, that he would be a lily-livered establishment Dem.
Looks like he is being pretty damn bold on this issue.

I'm proud of him for standing up.

9. unlike the 10 commandments Judge - the Mayor hasn't violated a Court order
indeed, what is his crime that he should be arrested for?

12. actually
we should wish for it.

Arresting Newsom would make him a national figure, and would bring the issue to the very front of the debate.

18. They've got a point
Not that I think it will, or should, happen. The first thing that I thought of when I heard that they were going to issue licences that didn't conform to state law was that they could end up criminally liable. They could also end up with a civil liability as well if the court overturns the marriage licences. I would think that the applicants would have a fraud case.

20. Well if the Gropenator....
...does this, then the queer community needs to call for his arrest as well. If he goes against the CA constitution something he has sworn to abide by, then isn't he actually breaking state law as well?

Yes, calling for the arrest of Newsom and further the arrest of gropenator will bring this issue right to the front.

23. The more they try to attack Newsom --
-- the stronger he will become, and the sooner this damned country will acknowledge same-sex marriages.

Right-wing moralists who oppose same-sex marriages should spend thier energies instead on nurturing their own marriages. The heterosexual divorce rate is always around 48-50% in this country.
