What exactly will come out of the gay marriages in San Francisco?

Can California do what Massachusetts do and just legalize gay marriage on the grounds of the California constitution? What's the makeup of the California Supreme Court? How liberal are they?

Politically speaking it becomes a wedge issue. If the polls are to be believed, 2/3rds of US citizens are opposed. I know which side Bush will come down on. What about Kerry?

I don't know how it will do it but all the right wingers say that gay marriage will destroy the institution of marriage.

That will be good news for some married folks who are not getting along too well right now. Because gay marriage will destroy their marriage and therefore they won't have to go through a nasty divorce.

Also the idea of the nuclear family which is at the heart and center of our American way of life will be destroyed. I don't know how this will happen either but I have it on good sources from my wing nut friends.

What really might happen is that the world won't come to and end and maybe some fundies will see that they have been hoodwinked and become liberals.

It's been a war on gay people. This isn't about marriage, or the sanctity of such a word. It's about gay people period.

There has been a culture war against gay people since Anita Bryant screamed about recruiting children in the 70s.

I feel a bit sorry for the couples who have taken the city of SF up on their offer to expedite their use as guinea pigs in a huge morass of legal and financial issues.

Predictable fallout includes:

- Tax filing status implications (federal and state),

- How banks, insurance companies, etc. will deal with right of survivorship issues when one member dies,

- What will happen when the first couple decides to divorce,

- Whether or not other states will honor the contracts,

- How employers in other states will recognize the relationships WRT carrying the partner on health plans,

etc.

California is already pretty hip on some of these issues. I personally know people who have registered same-sex domestic partners. That's working out pretty well for them. San Francisco is forcing a confrontation. Sometimes that's the best way to clear a logjam, but there will be some casualties along the way.

A little bit of irony regarding marriage and the Bay Area: in the 1970s my mother married a prisoner at San Quentin prison. My mother took me and my sister to the ceremony, held inside the prison by the prison chaplain. The fellow she married was a white supremacist, a drug addict and he abused me, my mother, and sister. He also murdered at least two people in prison.

Not that any of that mattered. He and my mother were married and this psychotic racist drug addict was soon released from prison to enter, and destroy, our lives.

And people think a committed gay couple is a threat to the institution of marriage. What bullshit.
