Take action: Ann Coulter's lies about Max Cleland
I hope enough people are outraged over Ann Coulter's recent column where she lies outright about how Max Cleland lost three limbs in Vietnam. Here are some contacts of sites that have published her column on Max Cleland. If enough people write in, we could perhaps get the column retracted. This is from that column:
http://www.anncoulter.com

"Cleland lost three limbs in an accident during a routine noncombat mission where he was about to drink beer with friends. He saw a grenade on the ground and picked it up. He could have done that at Fort Dix. In fact, Cleland could have dropped a grenade on his foot as a National Guardsman –- or what Cleland sneeringly calls "weekend warriors." Luckily for Cleland's political career and current pomposity about Bush, he happened to do it while in Vietnam."

The following account was published on Buzzflash. It's from Cleland's commanding officer, explaining the truth of how Cleland lost three limbs:

http://www.buzzflash.com/contributors/04/02/con04074.html

"The 2nd of the 12th Cavalry was engaged in a combat operation at the time of this incident. Max Cleland was with the Battalion Forward Command Post in heavy combat involving the attack of the 1st Cavalry Division up the valley to relieve the Marines who were besieged and surrounded at the Khe Shan Firebase. The whole surrounding area was an active combat zone (some might call the entire country of Vietnam a combat zone). (Is Iraq a combat zone?) Max, the Battalion Signal Officer, was engaged in a combat mission I personally ordered to increase the effectiveness of communications between the battalion combat forward and rear support elements: e.g. Erect a radio relay antenna on a mountain top. By the way, at one point the battalion rear elements came under enemy artillery fire so everyone was in harms way.

As they were getting off the helicopter, Max saw the grenade on the ground and he instinctively went for it. Soldiers in combat don't leave grenades lying around on the ground. Later, in the hospital, he said he thought it was his own but I doubt the concept of "ownership" went through his mind in the split seconds involved in reaching for the grenade. Nearly two decades later another soldier came forward and admitted it was actually his grenade. Does ownership of the grenade really matter? It does not."

Maury Cralle'
Battalion Executive Officer
2d/12th Cavalry Battalion
1st Air Cavalry Division
During the assault on Khe Shan

Here are some contacts of web sites that publish Coulter's column:

Town Hall: http://www.townhall.com/about/contact.html
World Net Daily: letters@worldnetdaily.com
Jewish World Review: schmooze@jewishworldreview.com

If anyone knows of any other places Coulter's column appears, could you post the URL?

Max Cleland has been attacked too many times by right-wingers, and I hope enough of us can make a difference in challenging the lies of Ann Coulter.

1. Max Cleland should defend himself
This may not be popular, but this is how I feel about Coulter's lies...

The victims of Coulter's lies should sue her for slander and defamation of character.

This is the only way to stop the cycle of smear campaigns.

The victims must stand up for themselves and use all avenues available. I think the courts are a good place to start.

20. Agreed, but
We can still help. DU folks get involved in all manner of issues -- if someone can take the time to "unfreep" a poll surely someone can take a moment to protest the lies in Coulter's column.

and have triangulated the issue; most feel Bush was correct in attacking Iraq because they were a threat to Israel.

The two most notorious neocons are Jewish--- Wolfowitz and Perle, and regularly send stuff to Rabbis in the US and Canada. A visit to any synagogue will reveal that the neocon agenda is being slipped in everywhere.

At least that's true in my temple in California. I spoke to a friend in Va and he says same thing there. So I assume it's nationwide.

9. Catch 22...If We Pay Too Much Attention
I'm glad this latest vile and lie-laden diatribe hasn't been picked up by the "mainstream" media. I haven't seen the Coultergeist on Tweety or getting much traction on this massive slander job. Maybe best to let sleeping dogs lie.

The other day, moran Cliff May tried to spin that Kerry "only served 4 months on the ground in Nam"...like one's patriotism is now gauged on the clock. Carville slapped his sorry red-ass by mentioning Kerry's purple hearts and silver star. Sheesh, these goons will continue to smear and lie if they know they get air time and look good to their bosses/paychecks.

I expected Coultergeist to weigh in like it did on the monkeyboy's MIA status and throw as much dung at a Democrat she could...and Cleland was too tempting a target for her. The Right wing hive is stirring to get this story out of the way and fast...even if it's showing their complete hypocrisy and slandering true heroes. I think the media is wise not to go near this one...I expect even worse attacks ahead.

Sean makes a big thing about supporting the troops...I wonder if he'll even mention her trashing of Cleland. I understand he called Kerry a hero for his service in Vietnam (in his new book which comes out today).I suspect that was before Kerry won Iowa, etc.

29. He Called Kerry A Traitor
I'd be curious to see that quote...as would others.

The other night he was trashing Kerry with that Fonda non-picture...then making the talking point leap into traitor for "tossing back his medals". This scum would turn on his mother to please his masters.

Wanna bet he hits Coulter with the Cleland slam within the first 60 seconds and then beat up on the strawman for the next 10...in the wake calling Kerry a traitor, womanizer, defense cutter, big spender...the usual rot...and then Cleland as an "enabler" (double points for the use of that exact word).

These goons know they're losing the military vote and the longer the invasion goes on and the lies pile up the worse it will get. I honestly think these blowhards think they're so smart they can keep hoodwinking people.

It was cute when Coultergeist slandered Clinton's zipper, it's a different deal when body bags are coming into Dover every day and the hospitals are filling up.

It's time we re-framed these bastards on who is patriotic and who isn't!

16. That was my unit
I was in the 2nd of the 12th and with the relief force at Khe Sahn but don't recall the incident. There were medivacs daily and we were spread over a large area. I'm not sure what Company he was in either. I was in Bravo company better known as "Bad Bet" The Battalion was named "Rovin' Gambler" The Companies were Ace High, Bad Bet, Wild Card, Stacked Deck and we also had a Plunger unit that rotated among the companies. Anytime you are handling armament in a Combat situation things can happen. Coulter is not very well briefed on Vietnam or the military.

... to educate the public about the facts.

I agree that Max Cleland has every right to sue her for all she's worth ... financially, that is.

But it is a shame that we generally don't honor our heroes until they come under attack from the right wing. Perhaps we ought to get in the habit of throwing more roses.

she is a creature of the spotlight. Take it away and she will shrivel into a dried husk...she's well on her way now. She's outrageous to get on talk shows. She gets us angry and we respond. Don't give her what she wants. Whenever we respond, she gets money. It's her livelihood. Take it away. Make her irrelevant. She's not important enough for anyone here to engage.

24. I wonder how many Live Grenades Bush* has handled?
She said this could have happened anywhere in the US. I beg to differ. Live Grenades are not handled by just anyone. When a person is in training they are supposed to throw a grenade but only after it is given to them at the location and under strict guidance. A grenade would never be found just laying around anywhere stateside. Only in Combat could this have happened. Only in combat.

26. I posted about this on AmericanForum.
Read some of the Republicans skrting around Coulter's words, and blaming Cleland for them...

http://americanforum.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=422

"In his article, he picks apart fragments of what Coulter said, then misrepresents and contorts them. A typical days work for a Democrat PR flack.

Coulter may be a bit harsh, but she didn't say anything that is not true.

If Max Cleland is going to have a big mouth and get his face of every TV show spouting lies and propaganda, then he deserves whatever he has coming to him. Does he think he can say whatever he wants, and everyone is supposed to smile and nod politely just because he is a triple amputee? I don't think so. There is only so much garbage you can take from someone. Even if they are handicapped.

Cleland is an absolute jerk and has worn out most people's sympathies for him with that big mouth of his. Max Cleland and Andy Brack can both go scratch. "

27. Don't forget to tell veterans' groups and even Zell Miller.
Zell Miller, for all his sins, was rightly outraged when Saxby Chambliss impugned Cleland's patriotism during the last election.

I think this last idiocy of Coulter's could be the last straw. The word from Joe Conason is that when you get conservatives to speak off the record, they genuinely confess that something is wrong with Ann Coulter. It's not clear what it is, but she's clearly a car wreck of a human being (and I use the latter term loosely).

No, this is going too far. She's going to get her ass kicked over this one, and not before time.

Here is the text of the messaeg to Town Hall:

Ann Coulter’s obviously political and distorted view of how Max Cleland lost three limbs in Viet Nam is beyond cynical.

Your web site should maintain a minimum level of journalistic integrity. Printing Coulters inaccurate portrayal of the events surrounding Cleland’s injuries is not up to that minimum standard.

Coulter got to where she is today by representing her client's lies, then concocting her own.

Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 05:44 PM by hatrack
At one time, it was an irritating, unsightly little volcano of pus, right next to the nose. Tender and touchy, it made shaving bothersome.

In the last year or so, that particular blemish has erupted. The goo which it contained has alredy been dabbed away with a kleenex. The tiny flake of skin which still covers the site of the infection is due to be brushed away from the body and fall to the floor as dust.
