Bush to Meet With National Guard Members
Bush to Meet With National Guard Members

WASHINGTON - After trying to quell stories about his Vietnam-era military record, President Bush (news - web sites) is seeking to move beyond it by meeting with National Guard members in Louisiana.

Bush was spending Tuesday at Fort Polk, La., giving a speech to thank troops there for their service and sacrifice, White House aides said. Two soldiers killed by a roadside bomb while on mounted patrol in Iraq (news - web sites) last week were assigned to Fort Polk.

In the address, Bush also was reminding troops about the stakes in the war on terrorism and in Iraq.

Fort Polk is home to a regiment due to return soon from a year of service in Iraq. The 4,000-strong 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, in Iraq since last March, is to return sometime in March or April. It is to be replaced by a brigade from the 1st Cavalry Division in Fort Hood, Texas, as part of a larger troop rotation announced earlier by the Pentagon (news - web sites).

2. I hope the National Guard people have a choice whether to attend ....
these photo-ops, although I suppose they don't.

3. Maybe some of these guys will "remember" him.
He didn't claim to serve in Louisiana, but maybe some of these troops will suddenly "remember" serving with him in 1972 - 1973.

5. Think W's trying to imply that critics are dissing the Guard,
by aligning himself with them -- when, in fact, inquiring minds are trying to determine if Bush committed to the Guard, and then slacked off.

6. These folks have stones to the knee! A snapshot of Guard members
applauding the chimp is what they are looking for here.
Some people do view politics as television with the sound
turned off...They are looking for the right photograph to
quell the anxiety of those folks who want to support chimpy
but are having second and third thoughts. I would wager most
people here at DU have made up their mind.

7. He didn't actually "meet" anyone, just made them sit through his
insane blather. If he'd actually met someone, without them being prescreened and told what to say, I'd have lost my teeth.

Remember how Clinton used to BE AMONG THE PEOPLE, and how he would actually talk with them and listen to them?

Another era, long gone.
