Drudge rumors and DU rumors - Is there a difference?
Edited on Mon Feb-16-04 03:48 PM by JasonBerry
I actually think this episode should serve as a warning ** to both parties ** that the mud can come back to bite. I shiver at all the "slimebag Drudge" posts on DU that could come back to haunt us. We need to fight on the ISSUES and defend other stuff when attacked, but we need to bring the ship back to waters that offer smoother sailing than things we cannot prove. In other words, maybe we should all mind our own house before screaming about Drudge tactics. Honestly, is there anyone here that believes every single thing that we read about Bush on DU?? If we were honest, we would admit that sometimes the smears - on both sides - just go too far. So many here (including me!) jump and scream when rumors fly at Bush and then act sanctimonious and innocent when we're on the receiving end.

Think about it:

Bush planned 9-11. (MIHOP)
Bush knew about the attacks before they happened. (LIHOP)
Bush was arrested for using cocaine.
Bush still uses cocaine.
Bush is a drunk.
Bush is addicted to tranquilizers.
Bush raped a woman.
Bush paid for an abortion for a girlfriend.
Bush is planning another terrorist attack to bolster his chances in November.
Bush has the 2004 election already decided through Diebold.
Bush knows where Osama is and is waiting for the right time.
Bush is a tool of secret societies and it started with Skull and Bones.
Bush had the author of "Fortunate Son" killed.
Bush had Paul Wellstone killed.
Bush ____________________. Fill in the blank.

On and on. Now, some of the above may very well be true! I am NOT defending Bush! But, we can probably all agree that many of the above are probably just rumors that flew out of control and have taken on a life of their own - independent from truth. We can't act all self righteous about Drudge and the Kerry story when so many here accept any anti-Bush rumor with glee and ease.

Let's fight on the issues and call the rumor mongers out, whether they be on Drudge - or DU. Or, let's be honest and realize that it's a two-way street and not act like outraged, offended saints when we read the slime on Drudge.

Just some food for thought about how campaigns are played and how we should stop and think before acting so outraged. No party has a trademark on virtue -- or slime. We really need to fix the system.

2. Locking
Rules to start discussion threads in the General Discussion forum.

1. If you start a thread in the General Discussion forum, you must present your opinion in a manner that is not inflammatory, which respects differences in opinion, and which is likely to lead to respectful discussion rather than flaming. Some examples of things which should generally be avoided are: unnecessarily hot rhetoric, nicknames for prominent Democrats or their supporters, broad-brush statements about groups of people, single-sentence "drive-by" thread topics, etc.

2. The subject line of a discussion thread must accurately reflect the actual content of the message.

3. The subject line of a discussion thread may not include profanity or swear words, even if words or letters are replaced by asterisks, dashes, or abbreviations.

4. The subject line and the entire text of the message which starts the thread may not include excessive capitalization, or excessive punctuation.

5. If you post an article or other published content which is from a conservative source or which expresses a traditionally conservative viewpoint, you must state your opinion about the piece and/or the issues it raises.

6. You may not start a new discussion thread in order to continue a current or recent flame war from another thread. The moderators have the authority to lock threads in order to contain flaming on a particular topic to only one thread at a time.

7. Discussion topics that mention any or all of the Democratic presidential primary candidates are not permitted in the General Discussion forum, and instead must be posted in the General Discussion: 2004 Primary forum.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation,
DU moderator
