FEC Chairmain Smith (repuke) will allow 527's - a win for Democrats
I got this from <http://counterspin.blogspot.com/>

who has a link to the WaPo for this story, but you have to register to read their story.

snip>> "Defying Republican Party demands to rule illegal the plans of a network of pro-Democratic political committees, Federal Election Commission Chairman Bradley A. Smith now argues that these committees should remain free to raise and spend large contributions known as "soft money."

Smith's argument, spelled out in a 37-page proposal to his five FEC colleagues, sharply increases, but does not guarantee, the likelihood that new pro-Democratic groups with multimillion-dollar budgets will become significant forces in the 2004 election and become what amounts to a "shadow" Democratic Party.

One of the new groups, America Coming Together (ACT), has already raised $12.5 million toward an election-year goal of $95 million. Such liberal donors as financier George Soros and Progressive Corp. Chairman Peter B. Lewis have donated $6.5 million and $3.5 million, respectively, to pro-Democratic organizations."

this is great news for progressive and Dems who need to raise money to even compete with the repukes and bush*

2. It's a win for free speech
But I wouldn't count on it being an advantage for dems. There's nothing inherent to 527s that make them better suited for dems over repukes.

3. I think the point has been made that it's about their last refuge
to raise bucks in amounts even approaching to which the thuglicks have access.

McCain Feingold turned out to be a HUGE screwjob for dems, as the thugs have much greater access to corporate HARD money.

527s give dems the opportunity to use good fairies like Soros, even though pugs have many many more from which to draw resources.

it would greatly benefit pugs if/when this source of money is eventually ruled unacceptable

from what little I know about this, that seems to be the general take.

am I wrong?

lots of people here know more about this than I do

4. Oh
In that regard, you are correct. My point was simply that the right wing will use 527s to their benefit too. But I understand now what you're saying.
