Outsourcing Doctors
http://slashdot.org/articles/04/02/15/0259222.shtml?tid=98&tid=99

Looks like India is trying to get us to export not just tech jobs but surgeries and the jobs of doctors as well.

1. there are no 'Free-trade" doctors
despite all the free-trade rhetoric this area is far less free then others. The number of doctors licenses in this country given to immigrant doctors are limited in order to keep wages of doctors higher. Clearly the AMA has more clout then most other unions. Of course they give more big money to candidates.

3. This is actually good.
The AMA is a powerful lobby. If they start to view this problem as theirs then things may start to change.

4. I wonder if this is true? Powerful yes but change?
When the hospital want to cut cost they get rid of the low pay not a doctor. Now I recall when Doctors had a big thing with the drug business and what they had people take and the testing etc. Now some x-rays reading is going over seas.Looks to me like the doctors are watching their backs and the rest of the people in that field are sort of on their own.

5. I was just watching a program last night
about sex change surgery. They mentioned that it was being done in Canada because (of course the doctor was experienced)it cost only $9000 in Canada, compared to double that in the US. It seems to me that if anyone wants elective surgery or doesn't have insurance, it would be cheaper to go to Canada. The Canadian hospital even had a residence for postoperative patients.
