Edited on Sun Feb-15-04 03:31 PM by trumad
A good old boy I befriended in Tennessee is was of the most informed Democrats I've ever met. He Loves everything NASCAR and despises everything Bush!

Winning over NASCAR fan simply means winning over Southern Voters... NASCAR fan has lost thousands of jobs throughout the South and are prime pickin for any nominee the Dems choose for campaign 2004.

Bush can go to all the NASCAR races he wants toooooo, but if NASCAR fan continues to lose their jobs to the Global World Market, NASCAR fan will vote him out... Earlier this week a Bush adviser went on record to say that jobs going overseas is a good thing… You don’t think unemployed NASCAR fan didn’t hear that?

1. yeah, well, according to an NPR story about 70% of NASCAR voters
went for Bush over Gore

don't hold your breath

remember, the south is NOT composed of the top 2% of income earners.

these blue collar workers have been voting against their own interests every since the mid sixties

that's not going to change because of this hype about NASCAR dads

wouldn't surprise me at all if it's a disinfo campaign designed to get gullible dems to divert funds/time/energy/manpower from mining more easily reachable demographics, like unmarried, unregistered, female voters, who skew almost as pro dem as NASCAR fans skew fascist

5. yah well, guess what?
like I SAID (did you miss that part?)

they vote AGAINST their own interests; have continued to do so in ever-increasing blocs, culminating in last selection's sad Southern totals

I said that in response to your mention of job loss, etal.

I understand all that very clearly, and HOPE/WISH you're right....just don't think you are

NASCAR fans in northern urban would be an interesting demo to poll, but we're relying on a lot of anecdotal evidence here, aren't we?

sure, people posting at DU are bound to hang out with more rational, well-informed people, right?

but the average NASCAR shmuck, according to the polling data I heard today, says that overall, by a margin of FORTY POINTS, went for the chimp.

9. like I SAID (did you miss that part?)... Now how could I miss that?
Look... I do not live in a delusional world, I live in Florida... The same damn state that gave more votes to Al Gore than to Jeb's bro Dubya... It can be done...The South can vote for a Dem... And top that off with the thousnads of jobs lost in the South, it's very winnable... I refuse to roll over dead like you suggest just because the South has voted Repuke for the last couple of decades... Folks aren't stupid down here...They saw a robust economy and job growth with Clinton and see what's going on now... I think especially with a Southern VP, we can take a few Southern States...MHOP

3. I'm in TN ....
and dumbya's support is going down every day in the south! I have registered at least 5 people who plan to vote for ANYONE but Bush. People seem to be fed up and IT's ABOUT TIME!!! You're right, the south has been voting against their own interest for a long time. Hopefully, they have learned a lesson with this Dipwad. It makes me sick to think about another 4 yrs of dipwad. UGH.

against the kleptothugs who are greedily ushering in their Rapture/Revelation scenario with rabid relish

not that I hold much hopes for what the spineless party will do if/when they ever get back in 'charge'

why do you think the senate didn't investigate EVERY single thing that dumbo did, as soon as they got the majority?

cause THEY're part of the problem, too:

their arms are in the cesspool up to their shoulders, not above the eyeballs, like the pugs......just a matter of degree

22. Ya well Gore won the election and if the votes were counted Florida too!
So that republican propaganda to divert attention away from the fact that bush* is the most hated man on the planet and like Clark said, "bush* is a uniter, he has united the Democratic Party!" so much so that I predict Kerry will win in a landslide.

7. If you do a little research
you will find that some of the biggest NASCAR states are not in the south anymore. Pennsylvania, California, Michigan, and Indiana have more NASCAR fans than many southern states. The NASCAR race at Indianapolis draws over 300,000 every year. Look at Delaware and New Hampshire. Those two little states draw over 100,000 for each of their four NASCAR events, and 90% of those fans are from the northeast. I keep trying to tell you guys, IT'S NOT A SOUTHERN SPORT ANYMORE. Talk to the marketing people at some Fortune 500 companies. Look at the purse for the Daytona 500. It's 16 million bucks for one race. Do you think these companies are spending that kind of money to reach southern rednecks?

11. I mentioned in my above post that the numbers are still overwhelming
against dems, no matter where they live.

according to the story I heard today, the national breakdown was a forty point difference

now...if they can break it down today, in terms of geography, and it's something closer, then perhaps it might be considered swing territory, but that was exactly the point of the story....that it's not even CLOSE to being a swing situation

waste of time, they said

again, hope I'm wrong, but seems to me that scarce resources are better allocated elsewhere, and this STINKS like a Rovian plot to me

13. The Daytona 500 is on in the background as I type this
I'm a fan of all kinds of racing, including NASCAR. I'm 56 years old. Current NASCAR champ Matt Kenseth honed his racing chops at the half mile track I can hear from my house when they race on Thursday nights. I am a political Progressive supporting Kucinich in Tuesday's Wisconsin primary. Any attempt to stereotype racing fans as brainless rednecks will end in failure.

19. Why use the word redneck at all?
It is an offensive term, and I thought we were supposed to be above that. Hell here in Huntsville we have Lockheed, Boeing, several high tech computer companys, we even have a airport with runways and jets and everything.

NAFTA killed the South as all the small and medium sized manufacturers packed up and moved abroad. The Southern blue collar workers need to be courted to get rid of El Presidente.

15. I am a democrat that loves nascar.
There are alot of liberals that like the sport. Also there is a
growing number of gay males that are also enjoying the sport. There is a survey that claims there are as many gay fans as straight.I kinda
think sterotyping nascar fans as redneck is unfair .It is the fastest growing sports.Nascar is actively courting all groups to
expand its fan base.
http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/4538592.htm
The outdated image of a bunch of good ole boys
is changing within the sport. There is a new all hispanic
racing team. This is not to say that more doesnt need to be done
with in nascar. But to group my family and myself in with a bunch of rebel yelling rednecks is rather unfair. It also gives the "nascar dad" vote to the pukes.Hey if as a liberal I go and watch the daytona 500 *which I did* with a group of people I can add discourse
on politics.Yes there were boos for *.
