Rabbi Urges Pig Fat on Buses to Stop Bombers
Edited on Sun Feb-15-04 12:41 PM by utopian
<snip>
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A prominent Israeli rabbi has proposed hanging bags of pig fat in buses to deter Muslim suicide bombers who may want to avoid contact with an "unclean" animal, an Israeli official said on Thursday.

The idea -- suggested by Rabbi Eliezer Fisher, a rabbinical judge, in a letter to police -- signaled the extremes to which some Israelis may be willing to go to stop Palestinian bombers who have killed hundreds of Israelis in recent years.

Judaism, like Islam, considers pigs unclean. But the ultra-Orthodox rabbi has ruled that special dispensation can be given for placing bags of lard in buses and public places in an effort to prevent attacks.

Police had no immediate comment on the proposal. <snip>

---Now this is thinking outside the box.

4. The idea behind this is....
that muslims believe that the bodies of the deceased should not
be "covered" in pig fat or meat since it would prevent them from
entering their "heaven".

I think all three religions should be banned...causes more harm than
good anyways... :eyes:

7. I doubt that the Rabbi is that ignorant

While there is no country on earth that suffers from a shortage of the commodity, it is unlikely that a Rabbi living in Israel would enjoy such an abundance of it.

Those interested in accurate information about what Muslims, Hindus, Jews, whoever, believe, have the option of doing their own research on the internet, or talking with leaders at their local religious institutions.

12. I second that
It's all about the deed, not the "faith" one believes in. This is why many Christians are CINOs. Christians In Name Only. And most of them happen to be the wealthy corporate types who go to churches that avoid any bible passage that says greed and wealth are sinful/bad/whatever... but I digress. While there's nothing wrong with God or the concept of God, it's what people do in God's name that royally burns my bippy.

This is SO close to being hilarious, if it weren't for the fact that the situation over there is so terrible.

Oh well, if the shoe fits...

9. and Israeli citizens who happen to be Muslims?
20 percent of Israel's citizens are Palestinians.

This kind of thing shows what some people there think of their citizenship.

11. oh for cryin out loud!
Will the muslims riding the bus be kept out of heaven if they DON'T blow themselves up?

Seriously, your post is a knee-jerk response. I'm jewish and I am not sure what I think about the rabbi's comments but I know I don't think it is anti-palestinian in any way.

It IS anti-religious fundamentalist though. And I support that.

From the DU rules:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/forums/rules.html#topics

Due to continuing problems, discussion of Israeli/Palestinian issues is limited to the Israeli/Palestinian Affairs forum, and is governed by a special set of rules which are available in that forum. If a discussion is primarily about U.S. policy in Israeli/Palestinian affairs, it is still allowed in other forums. Discussion of other Middle East issues is also allowed.
