Let's Not Forget Cheney Dodged the Draft too
Men like Dick Cheney, who famously explained, "I had other priorities in the '60s than military service."

Cheney received draft deferments as a college student until he got married in 1964; marriage removed him from the draft. But the next year, the government announced married men would be drafted, unless they were also fathers. Nine months and two days after that announcement, the Cheneys had their first child... http://www.oz.net/~vvawai/general/Chickenhawks-Crow-for-War.html

1. Actually...

His paternity deferment also came after his drunk driving convictions cancelled his student deferments.

A real class act. Never let it be said that the Republicans don't know how to work the system.

19. clinton/kerry morons
Clinton is the bigest draft dodger ther is and he proved waht demecorats are like. You can say nothing about bush when your golden boy was getting BJ's under his desk when he should have been taking care of protecting the US. Kerry is another looser who is not worthy of the presedency. His purple hearts came from being winged in combat and he ran like a little girl. Not to mention him throwing away his purple hearts on TV. Lets not mention the protesting he did with Hanoi jane. Hanoi Jane and Kerry are resposible directly for many deaths of US soldiers.

3. "Other priorities,"
like learning how to embody the concepts of Manifest Destiny, greed, fear, imperialism, and corporate corruption/entitlement.

God knows he had the best teachers available - the Nixon gang, Raygun, bush 1, Haliburton.

I predict that he will be jettisoned by bushCorp, for medical reasons of course, but I hope I'm wrong. I want nothing more than to have this slimy scum on full display in the coming months. The man behind the curtain.

You never even have to photoshop the hemorrhoid on mankind's ass.

9. Having deferments

and hoping the war would pass you by was not illegal or unusual. That's what Bill Clinton did -- and he was lucky when the lottery was begun because he drew a good number.

Cheney was lucky that his wife was able to conceive a child so conveniently, but others did the same, and lots more would have if they'd had a wife or been able to start a baby in time to qualify. The rules kept changing. One year grad school deferments were available, the next year they weren't, same with the marriage and fatherhood deferments.

I don't think that's exactly draft dodging, if they were registered and SSS knew where they were. Moving and leaving no forwarding address would definitely be draft evasion. Rove going to lots of colleges and never graduating is pretty damn evasive, too, and I'm surprised he wasn't nailed on it. You were not allowed ten years to complete a degree.

A draft dodger isn't a chickenhawk, though.

Not wanting to go to war isn't what makes a chickenhawk. It's when you didn't want to go to "your" war but you want the next generation to go to "theirs" that you become a chickenhawk. When you didn't go yourself but decide to start a war for the next generation to go to, you're a really lowdown chickenhawk,

Chickenhawks are the problem, not those who laid low and didn't enlist in the madness of the time.

10. Well said.
I said at the time they were making accusations against Clinton that almost everyone I knew in those days was trying to find a way to get out of going to Nam.

There were some exceptions. And I was in college. Sometimes blue collar, non-college people felt differenty.

My husband was drafted then, right after he finished college.

I think what shrub did is indefensible, though. He got a nice spot in the guard, and he could not even follow through on that.

The one thing I did not like about those times was the way we treated returning veterans. I hope we have learned something from that.

11. It is pretty sad, if one gets married...
to get out of the draft, then gets laid, when he finds out he needs a kid to keep the sham going.

If this is true, and not just circumstantial, I can think of few things that are lower. Anyone know how many kids he has? Just wondering if this is the only time he ever got laid, that could explain a lot.

15. I love this thread!
we all need to remember that Cheney's the real president anyway. He's calling the shots and he basically admitted it in a recent interview.

GW may just be a buffoon puppet, but Cheney is actually evil.

16. military service doesn't matter to me... lying about it does
if these douchebags lie about their service (or lack thereof) then I'll care. ;) I remember deflecting such attacks against Clinton. But he was honest (about that).
