ADD, OCD and NASCAR.

I was discussing with my wife today how I just don't get NASCAR. I've driven city buses for a living and driving around in circles bores the crap out of me. In fact, watching other people do things bores me as well.

And then my wife in her eternal brilliance says that it appeals to people who suffer from attention deficit disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder. She hit the nail square on the head.

People that suffer from these disorders run in circles and love repetition. Now I understand the magic of NASCAR, thank god that I don't get it.

4. You have to see it live first

It's impossible to explain without first attending at least one or two races, then you can relate. You also need to understand the lingo, the points system, the races within a race, pit strategy, and so on. It's a unique event. I was hooked after attending one race. Once you get into it, then you can relate to the televised version.

I was dragged kicking and screaming to my first one. Years later I took a friend who thought I was nuts. Now he goes to 3-4 races a year, and I haven't been to one since Talladega in 1999.

There is also an aroma at the track that is special. It reminded me in some ways of the aroma at a Georgia Tech football game in Grant Field back in the 1960s when I was setting in the Tech alumni section and the men were smoking pipes and expensive cigars. You would think all the smoke would make you ill, but maybe it combined with the whiskey to create something special. It's the same at a race track. The smell of the tires, the gas, the fresh paint on the cars, the smoke from the grills in the infield, and the various adult beverages combine to create a pleasant aroma in the air.

It's just an exciting happening when you experience the real thing.

5. I am a racing fan, but...

NASCAR just doesn't seem like racing. CART races are exciting to watch. They do more than turn left and accelerate.They pit as well. The team tactics make the races dynamic, and often not as obvious as one would think.

I am willing to grant that the environment at a race is exhilarating, but so is Indy car races.

Personally, I prefer two wheeled racing (cycles are in my blood). Watching the motoGP series is just phenomenal stuff...

6. Nice Description

You've said it well. There is just something exciting in the air at a race.

I hate it when I hear critics moan about cars going round & round.
It is so much more than that.

Have you noticed how vile some people can be when talking about Nascar fans? I wonder why they think every one of us are uneducated, tobacco chewing rednecks.

The fact is, many different types of people enjoy Nascar, not just right wing whackos.

Like Elwood said, go to a race, you may or may not enjoy it, but you'll see how much goes into running a car around a track at speeds up to 200MPH for 4 hours.
