We take an in-depth look at Judge Laurence Silberman, the man President Bush appointed as co-chair of the commission to investigate intelligence failures prior to the Iraq invasion. Silberman is a longtime Republican operative who is said to have orchestrated President Reagan's "October Surprise," overturned Oliver North's Iran-Contra conviction and helped pursue sexual misconduct allegations against President Clinton.

2. Silberman is a Turd of the BFEE.
From ConsortiumNews.com:

‘Politicized’ Prosecutors

By Robert Parry

EXCERPT...

A leader of this partisan faction was Judge Laurence H. Silberman, an obstreperous conservative. Silberman had served as a foreign policy advisor to Reagan's 1980 campaign and took part in a controversial meeting with an Iranian emissary behind President Carter's back during the Iran-hostage crisis.

At one point during the Iran-contra scandal, Silberman berated MacKinnon. "At a D.C. circuit conference, he had gotten into a shouting match about independent counsel with Judge George MacKinnon," Walsh wrote. "Silberman not only had hostile views but seemed to hold them in anger."

On the North appeal in 1990, Silberman teamed up with Sentelle to overturn North's convictions. Sentelle also served on a second three-judge panel that threw out Poindexter's convictions.

Despite the North-Poindexter setbacks, Walsh kept digging. By 1991, his investigators had discovered hidden documents revealing an elaborate Iran-contra cover-up. In effect, Walsh learned that North had told the truth when he claimed to be the "fall guy" for the scandal.

7. This guy's a sewer dweller ... spent his whole life there
Transcript is posted at the website. No charge. No registration. It's just sitting there.

exerpt from show's summary:

Judge Silberman has been described as a longtime Republican operative and is widely thought to have helped orchestrate Ronald Reagan's1980 "October Suprise" when Reagan secretly made contacts with the Iranian government before he was elected.

It is alleged that President Reagan sent Silberman in the fall of 1980 to make sure the Iranians weren't planning to give up the US hostages taken at the American embassy, thus creating an "October surprise" that would help reelect Jimmy Carter. Silberman was rewarded for his role in Iran with the judgeship that later allowed him to overturn the conviction of Oliver North for his role in the Iran-Contra affair.

During the 1990s, Silberman advised Republican activists on strategies to pursue sexual misconduct allegations against President Clinton.

Yesterday, Nevada Senator Harry Reid asked President Bush to rescind Silberman's nomination saying in the Senate that "it's been acknowledged by most everyone that he is one of the most partisan people in our community."

4. Since this whole thing is a sham
then why even bother to pretend that it isn't. I'm glad that W appointed an extremest wacko to head the thing. Then there will be no doubt in people's minds that this is not an investigation, it is a cover up.

6. Commission member Henry S. Rowen is a founder of PNAC
He's also a senior fellow of the Hoover Institute. He was writing in 1998 about the dangers of Weapons of Mass Destruction, specificially the possibility of their falling into the hands of Iraq, Iran, or North Korea. Three decades ago, he was Daniel Ellsberg's boss at the Rand Corporation when Ellsberg leaked the Pentagon Papers. (Alan Arkin played him in last year's tv movie.) And in 1961, he was working on a scenario for a survivable nuclear war on behalf of Henry Kissenger.

In short, the commission is a stacked deck from top to bottom. But then, what else is new?
