was New Jersey one of the most conservative states?

I heard that up until the 20th century it was actually one of the most conservative states in the country. seems weird today.

3. In terms of what?

Over a hundred years ago "conservative" and "liberal" weren't really used much, if at all, and the parties were radically different than they are now.

Offhand, I do know that New Jersey was one of the more Tory states during the Revolution (along with NY)and gave great grief to Washington during his travels through here.

I also remember something about Atlantic City refusing to turn out the lights during WWII and U-boats using them to torpedo the cargo ships leaving Philadelphia which appeared as shadows in front of the lights.

Maybe something else about being extremely anti-labor during the union struggles early in the century, too.

On the other hand, Joisey was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, had heavy recruitment during the Civil War, and was a center for Mennonite and Quaker peacemaking and idealism going all the way back to the 1600's.

6. my mother grew up in Burlington county...

says her parents were called to the principal's office in the 40's when she refused to read a morning "bible passage"(in a public school) and once when she said she would vote for Roosevelt if she were old enough...and my mom isn't what anyone would call a hell raiser...just tough to be an Irish Catholic Democrat in that place in that time.
