"Bush's aides back off on releasing all records"...including DISCIPLINARY
-- The White House on Wednesday backed away from President Bush's weekend pledge to release all records from his Air National Guard service.

White House press secretary Scott McClellan said the administration would not necessarily make public additional records regarding Bush's time in the Texas Air National Guard, unless the president's aides determine that they are "relevant to this issue."

McClellan refused to commit to releasing medical or disciplinary records that become available to the White House. Bush's aides had released payroll records and other documents on Tuesday that they thought would douse the controversy, but instead they raised new questions about Bush's service."

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/printedition/chi-0402120346feb12,1,1414145.story?coll=chi-printnews-hed

whatever happened to their "If you don't have anything to hide, you shouldn't have any problems letting us go through the most intimate details of your life" rationale for dredging up EVERY single aspect of WJC's life, along with Hillary and Chelsea.

I dunno about you, but I'd SURE like to see what those "disciplinary records" have to say, not to mention medical.....possibly something to do with "substance abuse?"

1. not good news for W
Even if the records were to totally clear this up in Bush's favor, the fact that the story explicitly points out that the White House "backed away from President Bush's weekend pledge to release all records" is bad for Bush. That just looks bad period, especially when you consider the recent Time cover on his credibility gap.

2. When the press figures out...
... that they've been diddled by the WH once again, and that the documents don't say what the WH says they do, hopefully, they'll get a spine and begin to call Bush & Co. the liars that they are:

http://democrats.com/display.cfm?id=329

Since there were persistent rumors in Texas for years that Bush crashed a plane (some versions that he did so while drunk), I'm wondering what happened in April, 1972, Bush's last flying drill. Why reporters have not sought accident and aircraft maintenance records from the TANG for Bush's period of service is beyond me. Too scared to fly again might be as good a reason for not reporting for a physical as drug use.

3. wow. this is amazingly inept
this is almost as idiotic as gary hart's challenge to the media to follow him around and try to catch him in a bimbo eruption.

the one thing republicans are masters at is image management. what they accomplished with bush, given what they had to work with, speaks volume.

but to hold out, then retract, documents is an unbelievably amateurish mistake in damage control.

have they lost their touch?

or are some of the knives that are coming out reaching into the white house itself ... that is, are "bush's aides" secretly taken order from someone who has finally decided to take bush down?

4. I would say they are in panic mode
and like rats on a sinking ship, it's every man/women for themselves and the captain is too drunk to care.

WRONG!

that's the perception among those that a have very SHALLOW sense of perception.

I know what you mean, but it's been the MEDIA MEDIA MEDIA that's allowed this illusion of image management expertise to succeed.

they've been complicit in these episodes of image management, in that they brook NO dissent from the emperor's image of being exquisitely dressed, coiffed, and in all ways maintained, while, at the same time ignoring the cries from those who can discern reality.

It started in earnest with Nixon's packaging by the likes of Haldeman and the car salesmen from California, and reached its apotheosis with Reagan (see On Bended Knee).

Bush is TERRIBLE all the time, except with our own homegrown handmaidens and his true-believing KoolAid drinkers.

those sentient beings here and in the REST of the WORLD know the truth

8. shiver me timbers, mate!
have you heard about that?

couldn't believe it when I read it in paper today.

hadn't seen any discussion of it here, or anywhere else.

what about you?

Disciplinary records?

how many TIMES was he disciplined?

and for WHAT?

one time......

twenty times?

could he have been cited for AWOL or AOL (somebody here posted on his own experiences with AOL) as part of his disciplinary record?

is THAT why they won't release?

how sweet would THAT be?

talking about the smoke emitting firearm

13. I'm confused
Dumbass said this on MTP:

Russert: But you authorize the release of everything to settle this?

President Bush: Yes, absolutely.

We did so in 2000, by the way.

So, if he authorized the release of everything in 2000, then why is it like pulling teeth now to get them from the administration? Why is it that all they have released, under pressure at that, is some questionable payroll records and a form that says he got his teeth cleaned one time in Alabama? I guess I'm just too dense to understand.

14. Two George Bush lies in one answer

To understand you have to realize .. Bush was lying his ass off.

1. They did not release everything in 2000

2. Bush will NOT release all the records like he said he would last Sunday on MTP

17. First VietNam...Now Watergate...They Never Learned
Congrats, Mr. McClelland...just like your namesake who made a mess of the Civil War, you have just prolonged your boss' personal quamire or the foreseeable future, and now have put the term "AWOL/Deserter" from a rumor into a part of the political lexicon.

This is where the cover-up is worse than the "crime"...the Watergate scenario. It's becoming very clear that * shirked military service and that his last year is all but unaccounted for. At best he got a real soft ride...not a great example for those sweltering in Iraq...or that he ducked into the same National Guard that he now uses as his international police force. We can't loose focus of the connection between his military record and what he's expecting of others today. This has nothing to do with the integrity of the Guard or Clinton. This is hypocrisy and the ability to be a qualified leader.

The manchild has the option to come completely clean...admit he either missed or didn't show for the final year and take his lumps...or, prove us wrong and let loose with the discharge papers that will put this baby to rest. This is all easily documented...thus all the parsing is what is creating the damage.

What's clear is they don't have the documents that can clear their boy. There's a problem in his past. I sure hope they try to hide and obscure and distort and distract...this story isn't going away. This regime knows its losing the military and trying to do whatever it can to hide that fact. Let the dripping continue. We all know there's more to come...and a nice even release between now and November would sure be a nice diversion in this dirty campaign.
