1. My question for history buffs is
Has there ever been another POTUS who entered office with a criminal record?

7. another question for history buffs
The FBI has to vet all the president's appointments.

If the FBI vetted bush* and Cheney, would we be in the mess we are today?

in NYC years before the civil war.

11. Are you kidding?
Sorry, that sounds funny to me! I guess the horse could have gotten hurt, but seriously how dangerous could it have been to drive a buggy going what 5 mph while one is drunk?

10. But that story doesn't mention the drunk driving arrest! - link:
snip>
This is the 1976 Maine police document recording the arrest of George W. Bush for driving under the influence of alcohol. Bush, who was 30 at the time, was popped over the Labor Day weekend near his family's Kennebunkport summer home. Bush pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor DUI charge, paid a $150 fine, and had his driving privileges briefly revoked in the state of Maine. The arrest record card was released November 2 by Kennebunkport police. The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles also released this summary of Bush's DUI conviction. (2 pages)

12. Karry got arrested at a protest
MLK was arrested many times. What's really important is what you were arrested for. Some causes are noble and worth being jailed. But in Bush's case, it was just DUI...

15. So what? I have an arrest record too
For being in the way of police charges at demonstrations, of course.

Martin Luther King has an arrest record, too.

So do a lot of people who should have been president.

There is no automatic shame in a run-in with the laws, when the laws are so often wrong.

The question is, a record for what?

19. I agree. And if Kerry or King were President, we would know their records
...going in. And make the judgement call as to whether it was "justifiable" or not. (I say "yes", BTW)

But once again, none of these noble considerations applies to a guy who runs on law and order, trades on his "honor", milks his piety, and touts moral superiority.

Then hides this shit.

23. Trust the People - Just Tell the Truth
we should decide if it matters ... through voting ... with a paper trail so detailed that nothing could ever jeopardize its integrity ...

I'm for listing names being considered for one's Cabinet ... the first few months after the coronation, it was nightmare after nightmare ... ladies and gentlemen, for your viewing pleasure ... John Ashcroft ...

Just Tell the Truth!

17. Maybe....
...Kerry should take this opportunity to release "affair records"...you know, motel receipts, bar tabs and such. Next to arrest records, "affair records" sound frivolous.

21. Releasing the "arrest" record is a pre-emptive strike. It does a number
of things. Somebody figured out that while we're dealing with this awol thing, we might as well kill two birds with one stone.
Publishing this distracts people from the awol thing while it hides his real arrest record. When people try to bring up the cocaine arrest and so forth, people will say its a lie, he released his arrest record, and it was just stealing a christmas wreath, a frat dare.

22. Pre-emptive Strike
These Repugs are masters at it. It is an attempt to obscure reality, another ploy that they are good at. Remember, the American public, for the most part, only get soundbytes.
