U.S. has arms evidence against Iraq
Reuters |Washington/Baghdad | 06-12-2002

The White House said yesterday it had a "solid basis" for charging that Saddam Hussein has weapons of mass destruction and dismissed comments by the Iraqi leader that U.N. arms inspectors should be given a chance to disprove Washington's allegations.

"The president of the United States and the secretary of defense would not assert as plainly and bluntly as they have that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction if it was not true, and if they did not have a solid basis for saying it," White House spokesman Ari Fleischer told reporters in Washington.

"Iraq has lied before and is lying now about whether they possess weapons of mass destruction," he said.

The White House declined to say what evidence it has that that Iraq had maintained chemical, biological and nuclear arms programs. But it said it has intelligence, some of which would be provided to the U.N. inspectors.
