Dennis Millers rating are shrinking...shrinking...shrinking.
If you are a Miller fan you better catch him fast before he disappears.

Even at CNBC, Dennis Miller has a monkey on his back

By Steve Johnson
Tribune television critic
Published February 11, 2004

On his new and flailing CNBC talk show, Dennis Miller has, to these guests' faces, lauded California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's accent as "infectious" and opined that former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has personal parts the size of Macy's parade balloons.

He's also granted co-host status to a chimpanzee, whose wanderings through Miller's darkened studio are often very amusing but also a sign of a show that doesn't know whether it wants to deflate standard television or join it.

Or maybe, by then, it'll be Phase 1 all over again. Miller's disconcertingly flaccid attempts to meld jokes on the news, serious political commentary, conservative hero worship and the chimp were greeted by a huge-by-CNBC-standards initial audience of 746,000 viewers, but they seem to be plummeting. Week one averaged 540,000 viewers for the first airings of new shows; week two pulled in less than half, just 261,000.

And it's no wonder, because a once-iconoclastic, hyperskeptical comic who seems to have moved into bowing before swaggering conservatives is nobody's idea of entertaining, no matter how hard the crew that is Miller's only in-studio audience chuckles. You can't spend a career deflating absurdity, and then conduct the kind of fawning interview with Schwarzenegger that Miller did on his first CNBC show, Jan. 26. Viewers' discomfort was mirrored in the face of the man who, Miller seemed to forget, was a bodybuilder-turned-actor-turned-governor.

1. Let's see, there was his network show talk show...
the HBO show, the NFL, and now the news channel show.

The guy has about as much business hosting a show as Magic Johnson.

When he gets cancelled I'll send him an e-mail telling him.

(yes, I wish him ill)

For betraying Free America and his own humanity by licking the boots...not under duress but happily, joyously, with abandon...of Imperial Tyrannical scum who hate their Newest Whore all much as they hate our freedom.

I know it's probably too much to hope for, but how I would love to walk past a filthy Miller in a cardboard box one day.

5. Miller has long forgotten one of the first rules of comedy...

Comedy and satire is supposed to be aimed at the powerful. Comedy in support of the rich and powerful is never funny.

This is the case regardless of who is in power. When Clinton was in power, jokes about him were funny. To make jokes about the powerless who oppose * is lacking any comical content.

42. Good comedians are incredibly insightful about people
pointing out things that the rest of us don't recognize and showing us the humor in them.

Anyone who thinks the Thugs are admirable leaders obviously lacks the same insight that is necessary for comedy.

8. What the hell happened to Miller?
I used to laugh at his jokes. I remember Al Gore being interviewed on Miller's old talk show many years ago. He asked Gore "who rolls the tightest joint, you or Tipper?" I about died, and Gore seemed pretty amused. Now he he's an apologist for thieving, lying, hypocritical, bigoted, fear mongers. I hope he was paid awfully well for his soul.

Comedians, like journalists
should "Comfort the afflicted and afflict to comforatble".

It is interesting that both the left and the right view the other side as "Humorless". They don't understand why we don't like jokes that mock minorities and the poor. We don't understand why they don't appreciate our jokes about Bush and Cheney.

9. Love the last line of the review!
"If they can succeed in making Dennis Miller no longer funny, does that mean the terrorists have won?"

I know there's a running debate here on DU as to whether Miller was ever funny (I think he was), but that closing sentence is just perfect.

He has become a joke. Our airwaves are saturated with these right-wing idiots, and they have to go down, because not only are they wrong, they're not even interesting.

And, their opinion doesn't represent the majority, no matter how hard they try to pretend, and the ratings prove it.

19. Dennis Miller is a classic case of a fairly intellectual person being
totally suckered and brainwashed by the events surrounding him. When he ( and so many other 'smart people') wake up to see what they were supporting, we'll almost be embarrassed to watch as the reality sets in. Then he'll be groveling in guilt, despair and regret. And we'll probably just flip 'em off and say, "You've been Punked", fuckhead.

25. Dennis used to be hip, sarcastic, and full of literay references
to the happening issues of the day.

That technique does not register with an audience who's
idea of foreplay is either

"Wake up, Bitch"

or

"Forgive me Jesus, for I am about to sin".

His timing is a bit off. He turned wingnut and rode the crest. But now he's on the downward side of the wave...about to be beached. There will be other casualties. The airwaves are saturated with conservative talkers. And the public isn't as enamored with them as they were after 9-11. I haven't even seen the heinous Ann Coulter lately. Thank God. Time for these liars and pandering hatemongers to be marginalized.

Miller was on with a chimp tonight. Don't you think this was a equal mind for him? He is so hateful...and those little hands, big head..ugh.

There was a group of "more mature women..with warts on their faces and too much make-up" the other night (CNBC). Boy they were nasty and so boring.

Who is picking these ugly talk show people? They are going to the same Neo Con agency? The Heritage Foundation? Picked by Carl Rove and VP lady Cheney? They should stay out of show business.

27. I don't wanna get off on a rant here but...
...what the fuck was the deal with Geo W. and his Magical Hypnotizing Bullhorn? Was that another fine product from the Halliburton Toy Shop? It turned formerly semi-assholes like Tweety Matthews and Miller into complete Bush jock-sniffing lickspittles in less time than Angie Lansbury took to flip over the Queen of Diamonds.

And I'm no Dionne Warwick, let alone LaToya Jackson, but my prediction...next stop on the Denny Miller Career De-Escalator...

...spokesman for Just For Men beard dye.

Course that's just my opinion...I could be wrong.
