Military almost out of money?!?!?!
Check out Drudge. It's at the top of the page. It is unreal!! They do not want to ask congress for the 50 billion they need until AFTER the election. So for political reasons, the armed forces will NOT BE PAID for 3 months!!!!!

Imagine if Clinton had done this!

1. Link?
What do you mean? That the soldiers will not receive their wages? That could never happen, all those still in the states would desert.

2. I refuse to check out the sludge report, but I find this hard to believe.
There will be a bunch of pissed off soldiers who won't be voting for Bush if they do not get paid.

However, it is true that they current $500+ billion deficit does not include a lot of programs and that when they are added back into the budget, the deficit for 2004 will be much higher than it is currently being reported.

6. Scary stuff.
This actually comes from military news. As unbelievable as it sounds, I think it's true.

8. It is true
but it's really nothing to be alarmed about...the military will use regular O&M funding to pay for the "war" in Iraq until such time as they (hopefully) receive supplemental contingency funding. Then, they will pay back their regular O&M accounts.

4. How can you not pay the armed forces for 3 months???
This makes absolutely no sense to me.

http://www.military.com/NewsContent/0,13319,FL_money_021104,00.html

WASHINGTON - The military will have no money to pay for the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan for three months beginning Oct. 1 because the White House is declining to ask Congress for funding until December or January, well after the presidential election.

_______________________

Oh wait. The WH refuses to ask for more money because it's a fucking election year! Now it makes sense. So much for supporting our troops. So much for "the oil in Iraq" will pay for the war crap.

I can't believe this. Insane.

7. Don't worry
This is apples Adan oranges. O&M funding for contingencies (to pay for Iraq) is separate from other funding. What the military will have to do is take their regular O&M funding, apply it to Iraq, Adan then wait for Congress to pass a supplemental so they can "pay back" their regular O&M accounts.

5. They'll get paid
The money the "won't" have is O&M contingency funding. That's a different pot of money from military pay.

12. The Democratic candidate needs to make this an issue
But not just yet. We need to let this one sleep until just after the Repuke convention.

Then we trot it out. During the debates ask Bush* why he didn't trust to American people to know the true cost of the Iraq occupation. Why did he bury the funding request. Ask the American people if they want to borrow and spend another $75 Billion on Iraq in 2005, after we've already spent $160 Billion.
