Stem cell & Repugs
I was listening to MPR ( Minnesota Public Radio) today . The subject was stem cell research.Virtually all callers opposed to the research (AKA Repugs) all stated the same reasoning for opposition to the research. My diabetic son and niece could benefit from this research. The general reasoning was that destruction of life for the possible benefit of others is not justified. That no "life" should be taken for the possible benefit of others. Is it not their entire justification for the war in Iraq? That we must sacrifice ourselves and others to give the Iraq people a better life. What fucking morons. At least give me a reasonable argument. But alas, they are fucking idiots.

1. There is a huge ignorance toward Stem Cell Research.
The cells usually come from unused in vitro fertilization procedures, i.e. they would be discarded anyway.

More fundamentally, by their reasoning, in vitro fertilization would constitute the destruction of life (the discarded embryos) for the benefit of others (the potential parents).

The reason we need this reasearch is more basic than medicinal purposes. For several years, molecular biologists have had the human genome mapped, but that's it. Stem cell research would give us a direct way to determine the complex interactions among genes. Then, we can derive medicinal procedures.

2. too true
There's a lot of idiots here too. Just wait until one of them needs a treatment that stem cell research could cure.

4. Do you really think stem cell research can
help cure brain damage??

5. They don't know...
...but the potential is there, and the existing data is quite promising for stem cell research to help more than just brain damage.

6. Sorry to rain on everybody's parade
I'm for stem cell research (for obvious reasons) but did anyone consider that this technology may not be there for everyone? Only those who could afford it?

I will be very wary of it until there is a universal health system installed. For the reason which it brings to mind the thought of having designer humans and the flawed rest of us.
