Watch PBS Lehrer News Hour on AWOL shown tonight!
Second segment with Margaret Warner. She interviews Walt Robinson from the Boston Globe (who has been pouring over AWOL issue for 4 yrs) and two gentlemen from the military, I apologize for not remembering their names, but the one Brigadier Gen. was less than supportive of BushieBoy and his latest records release.

1. neither one of the military were gungho Georgie--just tried to interpret
the history and the documents released today. Both rather noncommittal. It was McGinnis and Weaver, both NG retired generals. Guess what, there's still a six month gap, there's a big controversy about where he was, Alabama or TX, and Gen Weaver said he would fault W for not taking his physical. Repeat that nobody remembered seeing him in TX, where the "makeup drills" supposedly happened (or did they.) Pretty interesting analysis.

2. Failure to take his required physical is KEY.
Direct violation of regs which should have resulted in disciplinary action.

3. I watched and appreciated Margaret Warner trying to touch on everything
but this whole TANG business has me very confused! I remember one of the retired Generals saying that his attendence was "shaky" or "sporadic" at best.

The bottom line, the bu$h administration did not put this matter to rest. If anything, they stirred up more questions.

5. Questions hanging in the air
is a Good Thing.

Fairly soon the air will be thick with questions.

When the rightwingers breathing gets a bit labored, the exhaustion will set it.

That's really too bad. :)

7. I thought it was a bit of a whitewash
The 2 ex military types were just there trying to defend the Guard, and also Bush somewhat. They should have had someone who was more interested in being critical of Bush. The way it was, everyone there seemed to just be interested in making it go away, including the Boston Globe reporter.

9. Robinson and Boston Globe have always seemed to me
to want to print something about the story so they can look like journalists - but then want everybody to just forget about it

if they really cared about the truth or untruth of the story they would have done more than 1-3 stories on it in 2000

10. you are CORRECT!
I just finished watching a tape of it, and the one with the glasses REALLY poured it on thick at the end, taking the line about how great the guard was; that LOTS of Guardsmen went to Vietnam, and pretty much denied that people did NOT sign up to get out of getting their asses shot off.

buuuuullllll SHIT!

they tippy toed around all the tough questions, even the missing of the physical, and NEVER mentioned the fact that the DOD started random drug testing that year.

has ANYONE in major media mentioned the drug testing?

I've seen/read a LOT of things about this lately (it's all OVER the place!) and drugs have NOT been brought up once.

how come?

PS Daily Howler thinks Robinson is at least as bad a 'journalist' as Seelye or Ceci Connolly. Apparently he was a high profile/willing contributor to all the Gore disinfo.
