Fresh attacks kill three US soldiers in Iraq

Three US soldiers were reported dead today following the latest spate of attacks against occupying forces in Iraq.

Two men were killed in separate incidents in Baghdad overnight and a third died from wounds sustained when he was shot while on patrol last night.

The attack came hours after two gunmen fired on another US military convoy, killing another soldier. US troops returned fire, killing one of the attackers and wounding the other, Sgt Compton said. The wounded suspect was taken into custody.

A further four US soldiers were wounded yesterday when attackers fired a rocket propelled grenade at their convoy in Ramad, west of Baghdad, the military said. One Iraqi suspect was killed and another wounded in the attack.

Deaths reported in Lagos riots

Police in Nigeria's largest city, Lagos, have shot dead at least five protesters during unrest as a general strike enters its second week, union officials say.

Police have not confirmed the deaths and deny responsibility for the violence.

However, a BBC reporter in Lagos, the commercial capital, said one funeral had already taken place.

Local television showed pictures of bodies said to be those of strikers killed during an attempt by police to clear a roadblock.

Renewed clashes in Afghanistan

At least 11 people have been killed in clashes over the last four days between two rival militias in northern Afghanistan.

The fighting between the forces of Abdul Rashid Dostum and Atta Mohammed comes even as British troops are preparing to set up a reconstruction project in the main city in the north, Mazar-e-Sharif.

It is just the latest in a long line of battles between the two factions who have fought for control of the north since the Taleban was overthrown a year-and-a-half ago.

Dozens of people have been killed in clashes, yet the two warlords have been able to carry on fighting because an international peacekeeping force has only been established in Kabul.

Kashmiri fighter killed


SRINAGAR, July 6: Indian troops shot dead two Muslim militants overnight, one of them on a "most wanted" list, while rebels killed a Muslim in Indian-administered Kashmir, police said on Sunday.

Two Muslim women who strayed into the cross-fire were injured.

A spokesman identified the militants as Ghulam Mohammad Bhat alias Majeed Tunda and Muddasar Ahmed Bhat, both members of the rebel group Hizbul Mujahedin.

Meanwhile, suspected rebels overnight shot dead a Muslim in the southern Doda district, and in a separate incident in the same district snatched two rifles from village defence committee members.

West Bank House Hit by Apparent Bomb

JERUSALEM (AP) -- A blast leveled a house in Kfar Yavetz, an Israeli village near the West Bank, killing the 65-year-old woman who lived there and an unidentified man.

Police said it was apparently a suicide bombing.

It would be the first such attack since Palestinian militants declared a cease-fire on June 29. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Fighting rages in Burundi capital

Thousands of people have fled their homes in the south of the Burundian capital, Bujumbura, as heavy fighting rages for a second day between government troops and rebels.

The BBC's Kazungu Lozi says more than 20 people have been killed since the clashes began on Monday.

A 3,000-strong force of African Union (AU) peacekeepers is in Burundi as part of AU efforts to end the decade-old conflict between the Tutsi-led army and Hutu rebel militias that has killed an estimated 300,000 people.

Bomb at Festival in Colombia Kills One

BOGOTA, Colombia -- A bomb exploded in a town plaza during a festival in southern Colombia, killing a 25-year-old woman and wounding at least 16 other people, the army said Monday.

Among the wounded were children and at least three soldiers who were protecting the town during the festival.

In northern Colombia, authorities were investigating reports Monday that dozens of fighters and possibly peasant farmers were killed in combat between rebels and paramilitary groups in the rural area of Tibu, 280 miles northeast of Bogota in Norte de Santander state.

Officials in the region, which borders Venezuela, estimated that some 30 people were killed.
