Scary theory on OBL/Al Qaeda
Does this sound nuts?

We've heard drips and drabs and rumors that we "know where OBL is", and it's only a matter of time before we go in and get him. Certainly there's a belief among anti-Bush people that they plan to maximize the political gain by capturing him at an opportune moment, prior to the election.

I tend to agree that we know where he is. We've been in that region for two years, with some pretty high tech gadgetry.

Also, as a few of us noticed, the story was revealed that Al Qaeda allegedly now possesses a tactical nuke (1, presumably). I think that story is out there for a reason.

Pretty simple. Al Zawahiri and the rest of the surviving AL Qaeda leadership has made it simple.

"If you move against Osama Bin Laden, we detonate our nuke in a major US population center. If you don't believe us, try us."

Perhaps there's a reason why 1) Bush seemed uncomfortable addressing the issue of knowing where he is on MTP 2) we're seeing murmured stories about knowing where he is and 3) we're seeing stories about Al Qaeda's tactical nuke - all around the same time.

Think about it.

1. The one thought I had about the 'suitcase nuke' story
...was that if Al Queda truly wanted to blackmail Bush with it, they would be wise to not publicize the fact to anyone but the Bush administration. That way, it would allow the US to cave to their demands, politically speaking. If they publicized it, there's no way the Bush would be able to comply.

I highly doubt this is the case, however.

2. I posted a few weeks back, the fallout from capturing or killing OBL
could be frightening. Unlike Saddam, OBL is beloved. Saddam was a villian, OBL will be a martyr. Do you remember how the Arabs were outraged when they showed the de-lousing of Saddam on tv? And they hated him. I am not suggesting that we not capture OBL, I am suggessting that this administration had better have its shit together when they decide to parade him on the airwaves for their own political gain because there will be a backlash. Judging by the past actions of this administration, I think it is obvious they don't have their shit together and the consequences of that could be devastating.

They will just parade him around and declare what a hero the chimp is and then let the chips fall where they may.

4. With all due respect...
There will be a backlash, yes.

But do you really think bin Laden's THAT beloved among Arabs?

That's just insulting...

7. Among the Arabs who are terrorist, absolutely! And those are the ones
we need to worry about correct? He is not liked by your peace loving Muslim but the extremists totally believe in his ideas!

9. yeah, like any Muslim terrorist right now is thinking "I was gonna attack
the US, but since they don't have osama yet, I think I'll hold back."

Y'all aren't making any sense here.

They're going to attack us no matter what. Arabs seem to dance in the street for a variety of reasons, including Americans being killed, Arabs they don't like being killed, whatever.

We can't worry about "gosh, maybe they won't like us".

5. I agree
Saddam was reviled by most of the Arab world, and virtually all of his people, and we STILL managed to turn his capture into a garish and suspicion-bound circus.

OBL is a hero to many, many regional Muslims. He's a spiritual figure to the Wahhabists, and a war hero/opposition figure to many of the rest. Many doubt his involvement in 9/11.

You're right. This crowd has calculated wrong on more or less everything they've done so far, there's no reason to believe they'll handle OBL's capture appropriately.

Especially if that whackjob Perle is giving any advise on the subject.

3. sorry. It's not nearly so ominous. Here it is:
They release a story, now, about OBL having tactical nukes.

They release the notion that OBL will be captured.

People think the worst (as you are, above).

So. What do these republicans have a pattern of doing?

They create a problem, then they rush in to fix it, and call themselves heroes.

What's going to happen is that they're going to capture OBL and the nuke at the same time.

Right before the election. The Nuke will be in the waters of NY or LA, in a ship, set to go off.

Bushco will be a hero.

It's all a big setup.

6. I am not suggesting that Al-Queda will nuke us, I am suggesting
that there will be a backlash from them when this administration decides to parade him around. What you call thinking the worst, I call being realistic and I don't think the administration, as short sighted as they are, are even concerned with what happens after they capture OBL.

I am simply stating that their beloved hero will be paraded around for obvious political benefit and it is going to piss them off. They will at least attempt another terrorist attack! Do you think the idiots in this administration give two shits about that with all they have to gain? I am looking beyond the bu$h hero status and looking at the true consequences of this action. My final point is, this administration better be prepared for that or we will have another 9-11. Capturing OBL is not getting a handle on the terrorists world wide.

8. they're gonna try to attack us no matter what we do
so who cares? Why work from a position of fear?

I personally don't believe they have a nuke or they would have used it already.

10. Our borders
just how secure are our borders?there are millions of poor people just across our southern borders, not just Mexico,Cuba and many other countries would just love to see terrorists nuke this country, our northern border have some Frenchmen that don't love this country. OBL and his friends have tons of money to pay people to unleash a nuke here in our own back yard.Arrogance and hate are the most distructive elements in our country today, until we rid ourselves of them we will remain in harms way.

11. Good thinking
I think there could be a lot of truth to your theory. Of course, to many on DU, Osama bin Laden is nothing more than a "BFEE" and Karl Rove creation. Thanks for offering something that makes sense. Unfortunately, it makes a hell of a lot of sense.

Al Qaeda Recruited Gulf War Vets in 1992, Effort Linked To Saudi Gov't

Intelwire.com ^ | 1/6/2004 | J.M. Berger
In 1992, al Qaeda recruited U.S. veterans by exploiting a Saudi government program that had converted thousands of G.I.s to Islam after the Gulf War. Clement Rodney Hampton-El, an African-American convert to Islam convicted of plotting in 1993 to blow up New York City landmarks, was called to a meeting at the Saudi Embassy in December 1992 and given the names of U.S. servicemen about to finish their tours of duty, whom he attempted to recruit as volunteer mujahideen and paramilitary trainers for a bin Laden-sponsored insurgency in Bosnia.
