Et tu, Peggy Noonan?
Edited on Sun Feb-08-04 06:51 PM by CatWoman
Bwhahahahahahahahahaha.

I come to bury *, not praise him.

Gotta love it.

Right Wingers in meltdown!

Peggy Noonan tells us why Chimpy isn't good at "interviews".

First it was McLaughlin. Et tu, Peggy? :D

-snip-

President Bush's interview on "Meet the Press" seems to me so much a big-story-in-the-making that I wanted to weigh in with some thoughts. I am one of those who feel his performance was not impressive.

-snip-
The president seemed tired, unsure and often bumbling. His answers were repetitive, and when he tried to clarify them he tended to make them worse. He did not seem prepared. He seemed in some way disconnected from the event. When he was thrown the semisoftball question on his National Guard experience--he's been thrown this question for 10 years now--he spoke in a way that seemed detached. "It's politics." Well yes, we know that. Tell us more.

-snip-

So Mr. Bush will have a few bad days of bad reviews ahead of him.

-snip-

If I worked for President Bush I'd say spend the next nine months giving speeches, and limit interviews.

...before she was finished.

If Reagan pinched off a giant, steaming turd on her front porch, Peggy Noonan would write love poetry about it.

24. Peggy Noonan is Reagan's "Monica."
She's also seemed that way with bush 1 and bush 2. She ordinarily embroiders them a love pillow no matter what they do. That she isn't writing another rhapsody to little georgie-poo is telling. Even Peggy thought it stunk. Even Peggy couldn't find a way to whitewash it.

16. This Noonan piece is really weird.
She talks about Bush as if she is writing an evaluation of a child, a problem child.

snip>

Mr. Bush is less facile with language, as we all know, less able to march out his facts to fight for him.

snip>

But I am thinking there are two kinds of minds in politics. There are those who absorb and repeat their arguments and evidence--their talking points--with vigor, engagement and certainty. And there are those who cannot remember their talking points.

snip>

George W. Bush is not good at talking points. You can see when he's pressed on a question. Mr. Russert asks, why don't you remove George Tenet? And Mr. Bush blinks, and I think I know what is happening in his mind. He's thinking: Go through history of intelligence failures. No, start with endorsement of George so I don't forget it and cause a big story. No, point out intelligence didn't work under Clinton. Mention that part of the Kay report that I keep waiting for people to mention.

He knows he has to hit every point smoothly, but self-consciousness keep him from smoothness. In real life, in the office, Mr. Bush is not self-conscious.

snip>

And then the strangest of all:

"What we are looking at here is not quality of mind--Mr. Bush is as bright as John Kerry."

She must be absolutely deluded.

It gets even weirder as it goes on, but I think I have used up my snips.

This is a very strange mind at work.

20. I disagree, CatWoman.
I think she is actually defending Bush in a sneaky way. She's basically saying that Democrats are good at repeating talking points, and Republicans are good at making speeches. That speeches are about philosophy, and talking points are about policy. And that philosophy is better and deeper and nobler, and policy is for losers.

(And also that Bush is as smart as Kerry. Oh, and also that the media just has it in for Bush anyway.)

One quote: "Democrats have minds that do it through talking points, and Republicans have minds that do speeches....Republican candidates often don't. Democrats, because they admire government and seek to be part of it, are inclined to think the truth of life is in policy. How could they not then be engaged by policy talk, and its talking points?"

Get it? Bush, like most Republicans is just too deep a thinker to do well in interviews!

:silly:

I guess it makes sense if you're Peggy Noonan...

30. It was the best spin she could think to put on it, which says something...
right there.

Funny thing: if his friends are making gestures toward the door, I don't think Bush sees it. If he loses, I thoroughly expect it to be in good part because the Republicans decide he's just too much of a liability (and promptly start sharpening the knives for the next battle). But watching the light slooooowly dawn on him that he's been given the Judas kiss by his supposed "buddies" would be a glorious thing. It'll take him actually losing for that to happen, I think, which will be glorious enough in itself...

Holy shit, I don't believe it, but I can come to no other conclusion. They're going to have to pull something out of their ass.

Peggy is still pretty delusional though:

"But it will be a big political story in terms of the punditocracy and of news producers, who in general don't like Mr. Bush anyway."

Well, they sure seem to be on their knees alot for a man they don't like.

55. I don't know what the big deal is here.
She keeps comparing him to Reagan, a comparison that he obviously desperately craves. This is far more flattering than Bush deserves, and simply serves to lower the bar: "Sure he sucks in interviews, but it's only because he can't remember his talking points, like a true politician does. He's too much of a standup, regular guy for that sort of thing." And the nonsense about Bush being a good speaker? It's absurd. I've seen several of his speeches now, and he is somewhere below mediocre. He stumbles, mispronounces words, gets overly excited in the wrong parts, and all too often comes across as nervous and un-presidential.
