Democratic U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Austin on Saturday got the endorsement of the United Farm Workers, a force in the Rio Grande Valley known for getting thousands of mostly poor, Spanish-speaking voters to the polls.
The farm workers endorsed him for the newly redrawn 25th congressional district over Democratic primary contender Leticia Hinojosa, a state district judge from McAllen.

"The UFW had been in the past for Leticia Hinojosa, but at this point of the game Doggett was the best candidate," said Ester Salinas, a UFW member from Mission. "We felt that he was going to help us in every area that we're concerned about."

Democrats compare the new district, approved by the Republican-led Legislature in October after a lengthy partisan battle, to a "fajita strip" or "bacon strip." It stretches narrowly from the border to Austin, and Democrats say it was created to dilute their power in the Valley.
