Farmwokers endorse Doggett
Democratic U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Austin on Saturday got the endorsement of the United Farm Workers, a force in the Rio Grande Valley known for getting thousands of mostly poor, Spanish-speaking voters to the polls.

The farm workers endorsed him for the newly redrawn 25th congressional district over Democratic primary contender Leticia Hinojosa, a state district judge from McAllen.

"The UFW had been in the past for Leticia Hinojosa, but at this point of the game Doggett was the best candidate," said Ester Salinas, a UFW member from Mission. "We felt that he was going to help us in every area that we're concerned about."

Democrats compare the new district, approved by the Republican-led Legislature in October after a lengthy partisan battle, to a "fajita strip" or "bacon strip." It stretches narrowly from the border to Austin, and Democrats say it was created to dilute their power in the Valley.

Lloyd Doggett was one of the main targets of Bug Boy DeLay's redistricting scheme in Texas last year.

1. This is good news. I think he should be the VP
He's way too good a man and politician to be benched.

2. That's great!
When Hinojosa spoke to our county Democrats on why we should vote for her, the best she came up with was that she wants to be the first hispanic woman in Congress. That's nice for her, but doesn't help us. We are in the northern part of the "fajita strip" and don't know her from Adam, or Eve, for that matter. Not only do we know Doggett here, but he has been in our county several times since he announced, asking us what we want, not telling us what he wants.
