Just had breakfast with Kucinich! WOW! Repealing Patriot Act
Edited on Thu Jul-31-03 03:27 PM by Tinoire
Took the day off work today to go breakfast with Kucinich at Fort Mason in San Francisco. It was a small (maybe 100 people), informal gathering where he spoke passionately with a lot of humor.

As I was running in (late as usual but only a few minutes this time) I chatted with another late person. Turns out it was Medea Benjamin, Green Party bigee and founder of Occupation Watch in Iraq. Swapped business cards because I've been in close contact with her people there and would love to help. Inside, the first person I noticed was Dennis- quiet, not flashy but the presence is there! You see it and feel it! He held (not shook but) held my hand and I better get one of the about 5 photos they took and after a quick intro of who I was, I told him I was his number one long-time fan and supporter. Quick chat about GMOs and slightly longer one about Israel/Palestine (WOW! He really knows the subject and told me what I already know- that someone needs to immediately get involved IMPARTIALLY because that conflict threatens to blow up into a tragedy for the entire world).

About 20 minutes later, when he came to our table I was better prepared and handed him my business card telling him look Dennis, I'm a fabulous Executive Assistant, speak 6 languages, retired Military Intel Foreign Area Specialist, care passionately about peace, justice and politics and would be honored to work with you! With a quick "Come with me" he grabbed my hand and led me across the room to his National Network Coordinator, Dorothy J. Maver and set me up for an IMMEDIATE INTERVIEW TO WORK ON HIS STAFF! That process will start this afternoon and I'm, I don't even know what to think- all I know is that I'm very excited but apprehensive. PLEASE KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED FOR ME!

Then Dennis spoke to the crowd which was really receptive and passionate.

He talked about Universal Health Care, the war in Iraq, withdrawing from NAFTA and WTO to get jobs back in America for Americans.

He spoke passionately about the environment and specifically discussed our immediate concerns in the Bay area where the poorer districts are the hardest hit.

He got several standing ovations but when he announced that upon his return to DC, he will be introducing a Bill to repeal the Patriot Act- EVERYONE stood up and would not stop clapping.

He also talked about our industrialized prison system and how it needs to be reformed. Also that drug felonies need to be looked at very closely because many of them are undeserved. One of his big issues here is FULLY re-integrating people back into society after they've served their time and not branding them with that Scarlet A so that they can never again vote.

The hypocrisy of our lack of involvement in Liberia was also discussed right before he spoke about how our soldiers were being used and abused by the Bush Administration's enrichment and how our entire expedition there was based on lies and that THEY ALL KNEW IT BEFORE WE WENT. THIS WAS KNOWN! NO ONE HAD ANY BUSINESS SUPPORTING THIS WHICH IS WHY HE OPPOSED AND DENOUNCED IT FROM THE BEGINNING.

He also said he's been fighting GMOS, Agricultural policies & monopolies that exploit workers while enriching agribusiness giants and destroy the environment and will continue that fight for the economic and physical health of the American people. (He already introduced several bills about this recently).

Education came up too and he explained that the Pentagon's budget needs to be cut immediately because wars and conflicts are manufactured to keep them in business. He pointed out that Pentagon spending is about to exceed the military budgets of all the other countries in the world combined and that they don't need more money to develop NEW NUCLEAR weapons like they've been asking but that instead that money needs to de redirected to schools, education, Head-Start, decent teacher pay, bridging the digital divide.

Also the banking industry that sets up in poorer neighborhoods, refuses to loan money for improvement and takes the money elsewhere and/or uses it to help outsiders buy up every dilapidated house in the area, fixing it up to rent at an expensive price and pushing the poorer people out- out to where?!

He also talked about GREENING the Democratic Party and how it was time for a progressive to give them reason to believe that the Democratic Party could once again be what it used to and was meant to be. Nader came up, turns out Nader is a personal friend with whom he worked a lot on Consumerism. This was somewhere in the middle of his talk but I didn't take notes so this is all jumbled up.

The Green Party Head of California spoke after that and said that Kucinich stood for everything the Green Party believes in and spoke glowingly of what Dennis can do for America.

Off the top of my head that's it- sorry I didn't take notes. Nader came up There were then 2 female speakers whose names I don't remember and the Chair of the California Dem Chicano/Latino Caucus, Placido Salazar, spoke briefly.

A few minutes before going to the front to speak Placido invited me to a small 10 person panel to meet with Dennis afterwards and talk about issues affecting People of Color- called up NOIRETBLU immediately to invite her but she couldn't make it This lasted about 1 hr before Dennis left to make an appearance at the garbage collectors' (?) strike because they had asked him for support during their protest and he wanted to be there for them. More photos of with these 10 people and I AM STANDING IN THE FRONT WITH DK'S ARMS OVER MY SHOULDER HOLDING A "DENNIS J. KUCINICH, PRESIDENT" SIGN!!!!!!!! (but will have to get that from Campaign HQs when developed and will post here).

Anyway, I am psyched, psyched PSYCHED, and now determined more than ever to turn as many people on to what this man will do for our country!!!!

Peace!

1. man I read what he says and I am inspired if only I could meet him
Then I would be so happy. If we can nominate Dennis I believe he can convince the working class republicans to vote for him and also he can get the green vote for sure. He's gonna introduce a bill to repeal the patriot act man I just wanna see him skyrocket in the polls so bad. He has humor thats great I love humor in anyone. Didnt he once describe himself as a missionary in the dem party once I liked that. Kucinich for president in 2004: Dream to Dream the possible vote Dennis and enjoy and happy days are here again.
Tiniore thank you for posting this I love the guy even more now. Good luck on making his staff he could use a bright person like you. I didnt know you spoke 6 languages can I ask what are they? thats something Bush can barely speak one. We need Dennis and I think the sheep should know that.

9. GO MEET HIM whenever wherever!! It's worth it!
He is the most down-to-earth, genuine person you could hope to meet in politics. The way he spoke guilessly about the issues was remarkable! He has a fun, kind sense of humor. Not one jab did he make against any other candidate, NOT ONE! He made that crack about being on a missionary mission to the Democratic Party when someone asked him how he'd managed to hang in so long and do so much good, progressive work.

lol... The 6 languages are (in order of fluency) French, English, Russian, German, Haitian-Creole and Thai.

Peace and here's looking to you meeting him!

He is a great guy. He will be lucky to have you if he hires you and also please check your email. It seems to me that Dennis is everything I really stand for. He's the best we got and while Shrub's momentum falls lets hope Dennis's skyrockets. Let's even if we dont get him on the ticket let him continue to speak his powerful voice. It would be great if he can became like a party leader. I want him for president though.

3. Oh my God, Ti!!!
This is the BEST, most amazingly wonderful news I've heard for a long, long time and you totally deserve to be on Kucinich's staff. He would be so tremendously well served to have you. I know how much you have to contribute, and how blessed you would feel to get this spot, but I believe he would be equally blessed.

Good, good, good luck my friend. :loveya:

Edited on Thu Jul-31-03 03:33 PM by Tinoire
We didn't even discuss what position and I daren't think about it too much because it would be a logistical nightmare for me unless they gave me a spot here and I would lose the fantastic job and security I have now so this will be a tough one IF they're interested! You are such a sweet-heart and THANKS for your good wishes and encouragement my friend!

31. Hi Blm!
Yes I am kind of gushing... It was so exciting for me to be there especially since I've been down in the dumps for the last few weeks. He really invigorated me and now I'm believing again that there is hope, that we may, just may find a way out of this mess.

I'd forgotten to add that he also talked about pulling our troops out of Iraq immediately and asking to UN to help the Iraqis rebuild their country AND manage their resources themselves. We of course, would have to make a significant contribution to help them because after all, we did cause this mess.

It's so refreshing to hear these truths after 3 years of total lies!

You know what's so special about him? He's genuine. And when he talks with you, you know he's really listening because he speaks TO you and answers YOUR question pertinently.

At the after-breakfast session re Issues of Colored People that the Chicano Caucus organized (spur of the moment I think), this was really obvious to everyone. Oh lol, guess what, even if I don't get that job- I'm because of that meeting on a committee to organize "people of Color" events (don't know what else to call it right now) for the Bay Area. My friend, I collected about 10 cards at this thing so I am really psyched about doing what I can to help out- even as a volunteer.

So forgive me for gushing... The main reason I'm gushing is because I realized, as I left the meetings, that I was finally out of my personal dumps and looking forward to enjoying life, optimistic about life, again.

Peace

Here's wishing to you hooking up with DK! And also with your main candidate Kerry!

I'm going to make it a point to go see all the candidates and ask them my pointed questions! Peace

It was definitely worth the hour drive each way!

Medea was there- it seems they're friends. The head of the CA Green Party was also there and frankly admitted that they support DK but don't know how they're going to handle this one (since they are a separate party after all). I thought their appearance there spoke volumes. There were quite a few Greens there so I'm really encouraged.

Peace and thanks! :)

I talked with her inside about her "Occupation Watch Center" in Iraq- She was really surprised I'd heard about it so I mentioned I'd been chatting with one of her OWC staff members when they first got this off the ground and had been interested in vounteering... and then I gave DU a quick plug and told her that many of us really admired her effort and work with the Watch Center. She just got back from there recently.

The more I hear about this guy the more impressed I am. He's into so many issues AND IS ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THEM. I mean how often do you hear candidates talking about GMO's or about the relationship between redlining and gentrification?

And these are issues that affect real people directly.

The Democratic Party is really missing the boat if it continues to marginalize this guy and his ideas more seriously. Enough of this McCentrist crap. We need some real unambiguous progressive passion. That's how we can win.

And so does the Head of the CA Green Party. He specifically stated that it was because there was no longer a difference between the Rs and Ds over issues like Health Care that they split.

If we stick to 'real unambiguous progressive passion" as you call it- we have a great chance!

Can you imagine? Dems, Greens, Independent Progressives, and a majority of Native-Americans, African-Americans and Arab-Americans all coming together on this one?

WOW! Peace :)

I know you have long been speaking out for DK on these forums, and elsewhere I am sure.

A couple of weeks ago, Dennis was in Seattle and spoke about his long friendship with Ralph Nader. It turns out the Nader was one of the first to come to DK's defense when he was Mayor of Cleveland and standing up to the banks.

He knows! He brought it up! I almost stood up and started yelling "Bev Harris - Black-box voting! Talk to her!" but will hopefully bring that up to them later if Bev is interested.

But he talked about it and said that the he does not trust the people who programmed/made the machines and that the government needs to make them with the proper oversight, controls and open records. He said it a lot more elegantly than I just did.

WOW!

69. Aaron, it was FANTASTIC!
I wish more people would get as excited as we do about our candidates and how they address our issues. Can you imagine what shape this country would be in?

First of all there would be a LOT fewer Freepers because I'm convinced that most of them are just uninformed people who haven't a clue.

Then second, we really would get the person & reps the PEOPLE want instead of the same tired cookie-punched reps we have now with their same tired promises.

40 acres and a mule right? I have a good friend in Georgia who tells me the only sign of a mule she's ever seen are the politicans' attitudes when she reminds them of the promise! She likes to ask them that question just to be a pain... Something along the lines of "Whatever happened to that 40 acres and that mule?" A real riot unless you're the politician on the spot!

Peace :)

You really make me think a miracle could happen because there are so many personal obstacles to just packing up if they like me and ask that. Regardless of what happens, I am honored to have met and talked with him, honored that he considers me for a place on his staff, and will continue working for him tirelessly!

On the 1 hour drive home, at stop-lights anytime I saw someone cool (pedestrian or driver) I honed and handed them Kucinich literature (the drivers also got a bumper sticker IF they were a Democrat or Green). It was a FUN drive home!

Thanks for your conviction my friend!

40. those two are my heroes and you know what
This is a pretty neat concidence about Bobby and Paul although they were originally Massachutian and Minnestonian respectively they for a while lived very near each other I wonder if Bobby knew a smart young man who was like him lived so near and there was also another young man who grew up around those parts. No it wasnt me but it was my dad. Paul lived in Arlington like my dad did and my dad's brother would had been a classmate had my grandparents sent him to public school and Bobby lived in Mclyne*. I am reading the life and times of RFK now by Schlessinger not far in but I really see that Bobby while richer than DK has a simliar value and Wellstone has this too, and that value of course is heart.
Wellstone/Kucinich would be my dream its a shame only a third of the great three that is Wellstone, RFK, and DK remain.

44. Glad to see this in-depth info reaching
DU forums. You certainly made the most of being at the right place at the right time. I'm currently involved with "Peace Musicians for Kucinich," so perhaps we'll cross paths, by and by.

Between now and Labor Day, I expect to see a flood of multimedia press
covering DK's campaign, especially when he officially announces with Willie as a strong champion of his candidacy at the beginning of September.

All the best to you; at some point, with your multilingual capabilities, "Friends of Kucinich International" will be a solid connect.

57. "Peace Musicians for Kucinich"?! WOW! How wonderful!
What do you do? What have you done?

I JUST found your web-site, you modest person you :)
http://wewantkucinich.com/musicians.htm

I wish you so much success with your project. I've always believed that music can make such a difference!

There's an amazing Metal group in my area- kind of friends of mine. They're not very political but they do hate Bush. Right now they're resting from their latest European tour and I will direct them to your web-site. First I'll pump them up with frightening stories about Bush and his cabal to kind of give them a slight kick in the pants!

You go Dragonfly!

PS. You know Ani di Franco is 100% behind him also don't you? And I have a feeling Patti Smith would be... Don't know either of them but if you're going that big- I'd shoot them an e-mail. Let me know if you want me to do it- I can be totally brazen ;) The rap singer Paris who used to be with Public Enemy already wrote a very astute and hard-hitting anti-government song last year and I'm in slight contact with him. Here's the information on his song (pasted below). Let me know if there's anything I can do to help! Peace and really GOOD LUCK with your awesome, worthy cause. Music can really ROCK this vote!

Lyrics

"What Would You Do?"

CHORUS:
What would you do if you
Knew all of the things we know
Would you stand up for truth
Or would you turn away too?
And then what if you saw
All of the things that's wrong
Would you stand tall and strong?
Or would you turn and walk away

I see a message from the government, like every day
I watch it, and listen, and call 'em all suckas
They warnin' me about Osama or whatever
Picture me buyin' this scam I said "never"
You in tune to a Hard Truth soldier spittin'
I stay committed gives a fuck to die or lose commission
It's all a part of fightin' devil state mind control
And all about the battle for your body mind and soul
And now I'm hopin' you don't close ya mind - so they shape ya
Don't forget they made us slaves, gave us AIDS and raped us
Another Bush season mean another war for profit
All in secret so the public never think to stop it
The Illuminati triple 6 all connected
Stolen votes they control the race and take elections
It's the Skull and Bones Freemason kill committee
See the Dragon gettin' shittier in every city

CHORUS

Now ask yourself who's the people with the most to gain (Bush)
'fore 911 motherfuckas couldn't stand his name (Bush)
Now even niggas waivin' flags like they lost they mind
Everybody got opinions but don't know the time
'Cause Amerikkka's been took - it's plain to see
The oldest trick in the book is make an enemy
A phony evil so the government can do its dirt
And take away ya freedom lock and load, beat and search
Ain't nothin' changed but more colored people locked in prison
These pigs still beat us but it seem we forgettin'
But I remember 'fore September how these devils do it
Fuck Giuliani ask Diallo how he doin'
We in the streets holla 'jail to the thief' follow
Fuck wavin' flags bring these dragons to they knees
Oil blood money makes these killers ride cold
Suspicious suicides people dyin' never told
It's all a part of playin' God so ya think we need 'em
While 'Bin Ashcroft' take away ya rights to freedom
Bear witness to the sickness of these dictators
Hope you understand the time brother cause it's major

CHORUS

So now you askin why my records always come the same
Keep it real, ain't no fillers, motherfuck a blingin'
Mine eyes seen the gory of the coming of the beast
So every story every word I'm sayin' 'Fuck Peace'
See you could witness the Illuminati body count
Don't be surprised these is devils that I'm talkin' bout
You think a couple thousand lives mean shit to killers?
I swear to God we the ones - ain't no villans
Or any other word they think to demonize a country
Ain't no terror threat unless approval ratings slumpin'
So I'ma say it for the record we the ones that planned it
Ain't no other country took a part or had they hand in
It's all a way to keep ya scared so you think you need'em
Praisin' Bush while that killer take away ya freedom
How many of us got discovered but ignore the symptoms?
Brothas talkin' loud but ain't nobody sayin' shit'
And with the 4th Amendment gone eyes are on the 1st
That's why I'm spittin' cyanide each and every verse
I see the Carlyle group and Harris Bank Accounts
I see 'em plead the 5th each and every session now
And while Reichstag burns I see the public buy it
I see the profilin see the media's compliance
War is good for business see the vicious make a savior
Hope you understand the time brother cause its major

CHORUS

I will keep my fingers crossed also because it would be such an honor to work with Dennis and his amazing team. Everyone I met was so GENUINE and knowledgeable.

Thanks and I will keep you posted. He will be returning to the area and is interested in meeting with certain groups. Do you think a small DK DU meeting would be feasible? I just had that flash of an inspiration! My house is large enough and this could be a BLAST! What do you think! This would be our chance to cut straight to all our important issues like PNAC, black-boc voting, etc... And I KNOW we could pull it off! Thoughts? Suggestions?

65. Tinoire - I'd be happy to be part of any sort of meeting aimed at
promoting a DK candidacy. Maybe after you have your interview, you'll either be with the campaign yourself; or you'll at least have met some of the significant people in the Calif. organization. Maybe one or more of these Calif. staff members, if not DK himself, would be interested in meeting a group of Bay Area DK supporters, to discuss specific issues, campaign tactics, &/or possible ways we can actively contribute.

I don't have any clear idea of how the meeting should be shaped, but I'd be open to & interested in any contact with Dennis' campaign. So if you have any brainstorms along this line, let me know, & count me in.

71. I did! I already did! I exchanged cards with Bill Ferguson
the California Office Campaign Coordinator so I KNOW we could do this! We could plan this ahead of time and make it as big as we want to. There are great hotels in my area that would give us a good rate and the DUers here would definitely help people out with rides to/from airports (I think :)) if we had people coming from out of town.

Saturday, I'll post a thread exploring that possibility and guaging the interest because I KNOW DK would be interested in talking with us.

I'm already involved with the Silicon Valley Volunteers and I know they would be justifiably outraged if they weren't invited/involved also and it would be great to get all of us interested people together. Yes, let's keep talking about this and make it happen! No need to wait. If we start now, it could happen in as early as 3 weeks! We might even be able to time it around the next big protest (if he's going to be in the area) so that people can really experience the SF Bay area!

Peace and thank you so much for these ideas. Let's make it happen! :)

Peace is not a 4-letter word!

You're such a good-hearted and sincere poster that your wishes really touch me. I would be so ecstatic to work for him. Is the passion that obvious ;). One thing he mentioned today, that I know you and other DUers will understand is that people like us are not really angry about the state our country is in; no, it's more, much more- we are grieving. When he said that, I realized he shared our pain more than I ever thought a politician could. I was already impressed before but meeting him today was a rewarding experience for this political junkie.

I love reading your posts. Keep them coming!

Peace :)

I will count on you to give us Texans heads up in our neck of the woods anytime we can be of assistance in making Mr. Dennis Kucinich our Legally ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. May the Creator keep blessing Dennis in his quest to right the wrong being done to the world with good people likeyourself and so many others.

You have my appreciation, and hell, just wish I could be there. With you in spirit, and DU will just have to do for now. But talk him into coming to Texas. We ain't all rich and crooked cowardly gopiggies :-)

Keep us posted. And get me an autograph picture of Dennis, if it ain't too much trouble :-)

66. OMG! I love you guys! You're acting like I'm hired already!
THIS was definitely worth calling in sick for this morning! I will definitely keep your kind offer in mind IF they take me on, if it can work out. I am so pumped because of the day and all the kindness, the support, and the encouragement in this thread. I always knew DUers were great people but this is overwhelming :) PM me as to where you are and what the demographics are. Dennis made it clear today that he cares about people, REAL people and I'm certain he'll be in your neck of the woods!

Where are you? I lived in Copperas Cove, TX just north of Austin when I was stationed with an Aerial Exploitation Brigade during my military days and I had a BLAST. I thought Texans were the kindest people one could hope to meet! My first day there after a long 2-day drive from the DC area, I stopped in a grocery store to buy some food for my "meow-we-meow-are-meow-tired-meow-of-meow-being-meow-in-meow-this-meow-car" cats. As I was walking out of the store with my tiny little bag, the most gorgeous cow-boy I've ever seen walked up and said "Let me help you with that bag little Lady"; I looked into those tanned sun-wrinkled blue eyes and fell in love with Texas right then and there. The only reason I ever left was because the Army offered to send me back to my favorite party town in Germany but what a blast Texas is. I never met a Texan I didn't like except for my last day there when I ran into a humorless highway patrolman named Jimenez and that I dislike to this day for hauling me straight to the County Judge for a speeding infraction and my attitude!

Anyway. Yeehaw for Texas and thanks for your wishes!

Yikes! Can you believe I didn't ask for an autograph?! But I'll have pictures! Peace to you and

HELL YES! IMPEACH THE GOP!

Edited on Thu Jul-31-03 08:15 PM by Tinoire
The one hour drive home was so much fun! I just wanted to keep saying Kucinich 2004 and telling everyone at stoplights about him. I handed out quite a few flyers (and bumper-stickers to drivers) telling people that NOW is the time to get informed so that we can get the right guy past the Primaries.

I believe with you- that he would be the greatest President EVER though THEY would try to tie his hands even more than they tied Clinton's but I have face. Dennis comes across as someone who, once he sets his mind to something and believes in it, is determined to see it through and will wear out the obstacles in his way until it happens. The strength of honesty, personal conviction and determination… A clean and good man who can restore hope and pride to the grieving nation… It will take an amazing man to veer us off the course Bush set and turn us around. I believe Kucinich is just that man!

Peace :)

On edit: I am so happy you experienced the same thing! It's such a joy and a political pick-me upper!

I now promise to never ever laugh at a Howard Dean supporter for their excitement and childish jubilation! I UNDERSTAND now! :)

Peace

Our german, or better said Hamburg "Bush" just tries to throw out a 14 year old girl from Ghana, who was living here for about 4 years and going to school, while her mother has german papers like the husband of of her mother. And they have 2 other children born here in Germany. She's hiding now, but when those assholes have found her, they want to sent her "back"(!?) to Ghana, where she would have to live in a children's home. Bushs are everywhere. Save me!

80. Lieber Dirk! Danke an alle die mir geschrieben hast!
I especially hope your wish about the US becoming a place people can escape to once again comes true!

I can't believe that story! Das ist wirklich unbeschrieblich unglaublich! That is NOT the Germany I remember. How can they even think of doing this? Are there not laws? Are not the children protected? I really don't understand this case! What is their justification? It makes absolutely no sense!

It's an outrage! How conservative is Hamburg? In Berlin, people would have been up in arms about this. I remember when a father tried to send his own daughter back to Turket to saveguard her virginity and people took to the streets to prevent her own father from doing such a thing. But this is even worse; this is the government!

81. Aw shucks,
 I'm not that brilliant. Ask me to do some math and the vacant unresponsive stare will clue you in immediately! :)

I do feel already feel so honored. It was such a simple, genuine gesture that really flattered one of his biggest fans! (and I was really calm & poised there, not gushing and excited like this) After this morning, I'm determined to work twice as hard for him and tell twice as many people!

I have never been THIS excited about a politician in my life because I was raised to distrust every other, if not every, word coming out of their mouth but this man is genuine and so guiless when he speaks about politics that he gives you HOPE!

He was given at least 4 standing ovations during the breakfast and people walked out of it ENTHUSED! Trust me, I wasn't the only one! :)

Thanks a million James!

82. We need more threads like these, Cassandra
Things have gotten a little cynical around here lately (duh!). It is just so good to see someone excited to be a part of the political process. We all can make a difference!

I'm looking to volunteer for a candidate here in the North Texas area, but I can't make an honest decision yet. I feel that there will be one or two others tossing their hats into the ring.

Again, congrats. And never lose your enthusiasm.

85. I don't even know why I blurted that out!
I don't even know why I blurted that out because I wasn't meaning to brag- it just flew out on the spur of the moment! I remember blurting out something along the lines of "I'm a fabulous Executive Assistant, speak 6 languages, retired Military Intel and totally passionate about all the issues you're passionate about" or something like that. It was all so fast. But like I said, the languages are a piece of cake- please don't torment me with Math or Physics!

Peace Deek!

Is Kucinich Electable? Can He Beat Bush?

If any Democrat has a history of attracting swing voters and "Reagan Democrats" in winning elections against better-funded Republican opponents, it is Dennis Kucinich. He has repeatedly defeated entrenched incumbents. He beat a Republican incumbent for mayor in 1977, for state senator in 1994 (overcoming the national right-wing tide) and for Congress in 1996.

His Congressional district includes the suburb of Parma, Ohio, described as "one of the original homes of the Reagan Democrats." An Ohio daily calls it a "conservative Democratic district," which he carried by 74% in 2002. Being a success there may be a better predictor of national success than holding statewide office in a liberal stronghold like Vermont or Massachusetts.

Kucinich is a winner because he builds Wellstone-like grassroots campaigns against bigger-spending opponents. He is a winner because of his blue collar roots and populism, reflected in his battles for heartland voters against unfair, corporate-friendly trade deals.

He is an unabashed progressive who wins because swing voters who don't agree with him on every issue still see him as a fighter for their interests, as someone who will put the interests of workers and middle-class consumers ahead of big-money interests. No Democrat is better positioned in 2004 to attract 'Reagan Democrats' and swing voters with a frontal attack on how Bush policies hurt them and favor the rich.

Republicans use "wedge" issues to pry away traditionally-Democratic white working class voters -- a tactic that has not succeeded against Kucinich. In '96, for example, Republicans used his support of gay rights as a wedge, and he stood firm and triumphed.

On the other side of the spectrum, no other candidate can attract disaffected voters, 3rd party voters and Ralph Nader supporters to the Democratic column like Kucinich. Across the country, Nader 2000 voters and Green Party sympathizers are joining his campaign, as are other 3rd party supporters.

It's been a long while since progressives and the Democratic base have been so motivated, and so angry -- over manipulation and deceit that began in the 2000 election and continued through the Iraq war (now finally catching up with the Bush team). No candidate can better tap into and mobilize the anger of the Democratic base than Kucinich, who has never wavered in his opposition, who has courageously led the way in exposing war manipulation, and who speaks with passion to the big issues that animate Democratic and progressive activists.

Kucinich has been a winner in a swing district in the swing state of Ohio. And Ohio has 20 electoral votes. It is the state that is key to national victory; only two candidates in the 20th century won the presidency without carrying Ohio.

Al Gore lost Ohio in 2000 despite the Herculean efforts of Kucinich, as vividly described by journalist James Ridgeway in an article written days before the election: "Kucinich is a shoo-in, but hauling Gore along will be a daunting task. Shuttling back and forth from Washington, Kucinich has put together an old-fashioned canvassing operation throughout Cleveland and its suburbs that is one of the largest such efforts in the nation. By election day, 400 to 500 people will be on the streets...

"Day after day, members of the laborers, electricians, plumbers, and steelworkers unions crowd into Kucinich's tiny office on Lorain Avenue, piling signs into the backs of cars and pickups before hitting the neighborhoods. The general approach is for volunteers to use Kucinich's name to get a foot in the door, then ask for support for a Democratic judge before uttering the vice president's name."

Kucinich's best efforts couldn't win Ohio for Gore in 2000, but Kucinich can win Ohio himself if he is the 2004 Democratic presidential candidate. And in presidential politics, as Bush-strategist Karl Rove knows well: As Ohio goes, so goes the nation.

This is the first time I have believed in a candidate so passionately and so unreservedly. This is one man I really feel represents ALL the issues I care about. I can't find anything, not one thing to fault- and you all know I am not easy to please politically. This is one wave we can all ride ALL the way in!

Peace 2004!

91. Hope at LAST!
I have signed up to meet other Kucinich supporters on Kucinich Meetup day Thursday, August 7. All across America Kucinish suppoters will meet locally and begin to get organized.

I have watched Dennis numerous times on C-SPAN and I have always been impressed with his passion, frankness and intelligence.

Even is Dennis loses...(I know he can win if his messege gets out)

I know I will have done what is best for America by supporting him.

Can you imagine how the GOP will howl - Their evil and mean spirit will really show through.

BUSH IS TOO CONSERVATIVE FOR AMERICA!

98. Awesome!
That was the first thing I did and it's been so rewarding though almost all the contact has been electronic so far! It's also been so enjoyable to talk to people about him... I like to ask them what they care about the most & why and then just dive in with what Dennis has already done on that issue and where he plans to take the country on their particular issue(s).

I alsways keep flyers in my care because you never know. They're invariably impressed by how specific and concrete the examples are.

I know we can make this difference!

I don't think Dennis can lose with the kind of support he's getting and the passionate stand he's already made. Has past and present work really speaks to people!

One lady told me she couldn't vote for a man who had snubbed the NAACP. When I told her why, when I told her that it was his vote that saved her Medicare- she almost cried.

I never thought all those long nights and evenings on DU would come in SO handy! Lol.

I am so glad you're behind him! It's your passion he needs to make that difference!
Peace and thanks

Naive as it may sound, I'm not ready to abandon hope that amazing things can happen through the power of the people, and I don't think anyone in this race can tap the power of the people quiet like Dennis!

We need something SO radically different that those 50% who don't vote are suddenly motivated to hit the streets, Dennis is that man!

104. Thanks for your good wishes Darranar!
I feel the same about him. As if he is a political Messiah for me because I was so jaded and cynical that things could ever change. Then Kucinich, who I never thought would run for President, announced his candidacy. There is not one, not one stand of his that I disagree with and that to me is AMAZING!

I posted all his issues here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=108&topic_id=10913&mesg_id=10913 so everyone could learn about them and use as a reference if they wanted.

It would be great to see die-hard supporters of the other candidates do the same so that we can all discuss, learn, and make the most informed choice. Any takers from the other camps?

Peace :)

105. Kucinich gets Green support
Here's a story from the San Francisco Examiner about the top CA Greens coming out to support Dennis during his visit here:

Congressman Dennis Kucinich supports legalizing gay marriage, repealing the death penalty and the Patriot Act, withdrawing from the World Trade Organization and scrapping the North American Free Trade Agreement, implementing national ranked choice voting and publicly financed political campaigns, ending the occupation of Iraq, creating universal single-payer health care, forming a Department of Peace, cutting the Pentagon budget by 15 percent, legalizing medical marijuana and upholding legalized abortion.

...Thursday in San Francisco, three of California's most prominent Green Party members voiced support for Kucinich, though stopping short of formal endorsements because of the party divide.

"If Kucinich is the Democratic nominee, I am sure the Democrats and the Greens will work collaboratively to oust George Bush in next year's election," said Matt Gonzalez, president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, who introduced the candidate at a breakfast for his supporters.

Medea Benjamin, co-founder of Global Exchange and Code Pink Women for Peace and U.S. Senate candidate for the Greens in 2000, told The Examiner that Kucinich is "as green as you can get."

...Peter Camejo, California's Green Party candidate for governor, said if Kucinich were to win the Democratic nod, he "would favor calling an emergency national convention of the Green Party" to discuss how to support the progressive candidate.
