2. the MUST READ article of the month! (krugman)
this article (long! yeah! extra Krugman!!) is a review of Suskind's PRICE OF LOYALTY and Phillip's AMERICAN DYNANSTY. it is just brilliant!

Guy if you haven't seen this I WISH I had found it sooner. Have a great show!

The Wars of the Texas Succession

Old-line Republicans that I know cling to the belief that the Machiavellianism is only temporary, that it's embraced in service to a higher goal. Once the 2004 election is over, they say Bush will show his true colors as an idealist, someone who genuinely believes in small government and free markets.

But if Phillips is right—and I think he is—there is no higher goal. Bush's motivations are dynastic—to secure his family's rightful place. While he may have some policy biases—like that "instinctive policy fealty" to the investment business—policy is basically there to serve the acquisition of power, and not the other way around.

According to people who observed him in Texas, Karl Rove is a devotee of Machiavelli, and particularly of The Prince. And as Phillips points out, "Twenty-first-century American readers of The Prince may feel that they have stumbled on a thinly disguised Bush White House political memo." For Machiavelli's book was all about how to gain and hold power, not about what to do with it.

So what is the state of the union? Let Phillips have the last word:
The advent of a Machiavelli-inclined dynasty in what may be a Machiavellian Moment for the American Republic is not a happy coincidence.... National governance has, at least temporarily, moved away from the proven tradition of a leader chosen democratically, by a majority or plurality of the electorate, to the succession of a dynastic heir whose unfortunate inheritance is privileged, covert, and globally embroiling.

5. I sure wish these CIA folks
had come out with the info they knew before we went to war against Iraq. Maybe when the administration was poisoning the nation's opinions with the lies and inuendo would have been a good time for their revelations. Too bad it took the Plamme affair to bring them out of the woodwork.

If I'm all wet, I apologize in advance. But as I was making breakfast this morning, the whole thing just got me ticked off. So many of our soldiers have been killed or wounded and so many innocent Iraqi lives have been wasted.

Well, that's about it.

46. What's the pay scale?

Will I make as much in salary as The London Bureau Chief? I know he can play the Big Ben chimes whenever he comes on the air, which to the shallow thinkers in the audience might lend his views an air of importance and gravitas, but I don't think that warrants he get higher pay than me. As long as I can offer the same level of penetrating analysis of the Chimp's latest screw ups as he does, I expect the same salary as the London Bureau Chief. Guy contact my agent and we'll talk. :7

26. Re the Israeli role in not passing on info about non-existence of WMD
The Guardian mentions that an Israeli special intelligence unit operating within Sharon's office was meeting with the OSP and passing on questionable intelligence re Iraq and WMD.

The OSP was an open and largely unfiltered conduit to the White House not only for the Iraqi opposition. It also forged close ties to a parallel, ad hoc intelligence operation inside Ariel Sharon's office in Israel specifically to bypass Mossad and provide the Bush administration with more alarmist reports on Saddam's Iraq than Mossad was prepared to authorise.

"None of the Israelis who came were cleared into the Pentagon through normal channels," said one source familiar with the visits. Instead, they were waved in on Mr Feith's authority without having to fill in the usual forms.

The exchange of information continued a long-standing relationship Mr Feith and other Washington neo-conservatives had with Israel's Likud party.

...because I was getting pretty irritated at his chuckling throughout this conversation. I was getting ready to just shut it off. I don't find anything humorous about this whole matter.

Here we go - Valerie PLamme. It took that mess to spring the CIA out from the comfortable inner sanctum shadows. They had to be thrown on the poop heap with the rest of us before they came forward with their insights.
