Charles Taylor is an escapee from the Plymouth County jail
Finally the truth about Charles Taylor is making it's way to the mainstream press. Now, can some one tell me why aren't we trying to extradite the MFer back to the US to finish up his sentence? And, gee didn't Pat Robertson know that his buddy was an escaped felon from a US prison?

Liberian President Attended Mass. College

July 8, 2003, 8:11 AM EDT

BOSTON -- Indicted for war crimes, his country torn apart by civil conflict, poised to go into exile -- Liberian President Charles Taylor is at the center of a gripping international drama.

But he was once just a young man with an unremarkable name who pumped gas, worked in a plastics factory, and studied at a Massachusetts college.

He also earned a share of notoriety by becoming the only escapee from the Plymouth County jail who wasn't caught.

<snip>

On Sept. 15, 1985, Taylor cut through bars with a hacksaw and climbed down a knotted sheet to gain his freedom, avoiding extradition and trial in his home country.

How he originally ended up in the US I do not know. Maybe he came over for some special CIA training?

Taylor in Middle of W. African Conflicts

Taylor was born of mixed heritage, his father of local Liberian stock and his mother a descendant of the freed American slaves who founded Liberia, Africa's oldest republic, in the 19th century.

6. But wait - there's more.....
Or at least I seem to remember there being more. (?)

I watched a documentary about Liberia many moons ago, and I swear I remember that not only was Charles Taylor sent to the US for his education, a prison escapee, but that his father was a brutal dictator himself (or at least some higher up muckity muck in the brutal dictatorship) and that Charles Taylor was with the Marines when we went to Liberia on a humanitarian aid mission. I don't remember if he was a marine or if he just accompanied the marines? I'm kinda leaning towards "was a marine".

8. I recall seeing some allegations of bribery too
Something about passing bribes to the guards to leave him be while he and his buddies cut their way out. I may be wrong, but if you're interested I'm sure Google could find something on it.
