2. No, I don't. He's the reason I left the Republican party.
I despised Reagan, his vice-president, and all the members of the administration. They were so blatantly out for stealing from the American taxpayer and lining their own pockets that it was sickening.

That's when I first said "These are not my people."

83. Me too, but for different reasons.
I actually voted for GHWB in the Iowa caucuses that year. When Reagan eventually got the nomination, I was dumbfounded that voters could actually be so idiotic as to believe that you could raise defense spending, cut taxes, and balance the budget. It was 'voodoo economics' as GHWB said.

When Reagan not only won the nomination, but beat Carter in November, I think it totally blew my faith in the ability of the American people to actually make intelligent decisions.

1980 marked a turning point for Republicans on abortion too. Prior to 1980, many Republicans were pro-choice. Now, that isn't allowed.

3. Reagan is actually VERY unpopular
the media and right wingers try to spin the myth of Reagan as beloved.

In fact, Reagan is not beloved, he is widely reviled for very good reason.

If he was so well loved, would the right wingers have to have a committee to name an object in every county after him? That's the kind of thing authoritarian dictators do to overcome the hatred their people have for them...

13. Remember Reagan's story about welfare queens driving Cadillacs?
Edited on Thu Feb-05-04 07:38 PM by WhoCountsTheVotes
Ronald Reagan, the rich white Hollywood actor, divorced, remarried, and never went to church, told stories about black mothers on welfare driving around in Cadillacs because they were living the high life on $250 county checks and babysitting money. The problem was low moral standards and lack of a work ethic, this from the Hollywood actor who had servants.

You have to be either a) rich, or b) a complete and utter moron, to like Ronald Reagan.

On edit: Who the hell is "Tweety" and why should I care what he thinks?

Had nothing to do with it. Either did the fact that it was a seriously flawed system. Super Ronnie just showed up and beat them Soviets. Simple thoughts from simple minds.
Reagan's most notable accomplishment was providing massive amounts of modern arms to both Iran and Iraq.

39. Reagan defeated the Soviets?
I find it hilarious that Republicans still claim Reagan was a great crusader against Communism. Republicans constantly parrot the idea that Communism simply cannot work; it will collapse on its own.

But unfortunately, the Reagan Repbulicans were so afraid that communism MIGHT actually work, they had to perform aggressive intervention to make SURE that it failed.

The Republicans were terrified by it, so they had to take matters into their own hands to make sure it came apart. They like to claim that the massive and irrational military buildup of the Reagan administration was the reason that communism collapsed in the Soviet Union. Very laughable actually as the situation was actually the opposite of this. Before the Soviet Union fell, I've even read of some things said "off the record" by some of the top Soviet Economists at the time--namely they would go to different conventions and talk official party line but once they were away from all that they confided in some of the top U.S. economists that they KNEW that what they said was pure bullshit and that the Soviet System was a basket case and it was eventually going to come apart and already was starting--it would collapse of its own weight and inefficiencies.

Later, the former Soviet economists admitted that it was in fact the very Republican military buildup that held the Soviet Union together as long as it did. By forcing the communists to build military hardware, it actually promoted a war time economy and gave them something to do and focus the attention of the population on rather than letting them see their own problems. In peace time, their economy had nothing to make and no means for it to work. It is very likely that the Soviet Union would have collapsed sooner had Reagan built nothing as the Soviets had no peace time economy at all and that is the very thing that ultimately made them fall apart (lack of a functional peace time economy). So Reagan spent HUGE amounts of money and in effect actually somewhat prolonged an inevitable end to the Soviet Union by doing so. And U.S. economists have said, at best, the military buildup didn't affect the rate at which the Soviet System collapsed but conceded that in all likelihood, it actually prolonged it by a number of years. So there is a case of HUGE amount of money that bought practically nothing.

It should be noted that in Gulf War I, Bush the first authorized the use of many of the weapons built up by the Reagan administration to be used in order to "get rid of them." They had already become obsolete and many were aging and slated for destruction (another cost the government would have had borne as well associated with the buildup). So it didn't really buy anything of lasting value. The Soviet Union would have collapsed anyway and the U.S. was never actually particularly threatended by them inspite of all the propoganda and hype. The other interesting thing to note is that the Russians and the Americans have never fought a war against each other but have fought on the same side through two world wars which shows what really happens when push comes to shove. It should also be noted that even Stalin did not originally consider the Americans the enemy as we had been allies. He was outraged when he found out that it was the Americans that were spying on him and consequently retaliated and return the favor in kind--so began the cold war. It was always used to justify the bloated war time economy of the industrial military complex well beyond what was actually necessary. I was wondering who they'd come up with after the fall of the Soviets to continue to justify their existence. Bush the first talked about a "war on terror" and now it surfaces with his son. Wow! What a perfect enemy to cause the ultimate fear. A war that can never end and can strike anywhere!

23. What I liked most about Raygun were: the highly regressive tax policies
and the ensuing multi-trillion dollar deficits that followed; how the air traffic controllers were fired, especially those on approved leave, but whose records were falsified; the 500,000 or more kicked off Social Security disability rolls without due process, many who died before they could be rightfully restored; the scandals at the EPA, HUD, et al and the rather large number of high-ranking officials who were indicted; the $600 toilet seats; the some 250 or more times Bill Casey purportedly went to Raygun for approval for some covert act to combat a "clear and present" danger, often meaning some terrorist-like act on some foreign soil; the invasion of Granada; the mining of the Nicaraguan harbor in violation of international law; Ollie, Poindexter, and the entire illegal Iran-Contra affairs. Those just for starters. And yes, he was certainly good with the one-liners.

28. Reagan was a fraud
wrapped in a soundbite.

He signed 7 tax increases, despite being beloved by conservatives for cutting taxes.

He was a divorced former alcoholic, accused of rape and estranged from at least one of his children, despite being beloved by conservatives for standing up for family values.

He relied on his wife, his chief of staff and his ideologue pals for direction on virtually every aspect of his presidency, despite being being beloved by conservatives for leadership.

He killed thousands of peasants in Central America, coddled dictators, traded with terrorists, and presided over BY FAR the most corrupt presidential administration in history. He joked about nuclear war, forgot the names of his cabinet members and mourned dead Waffen SS Stormtroopers as 'victims'. He gave us Saddam Hussein.

Everything that came out of his mouth was a rehearsed lie, disengeuous polictical claptrap or blather. He was a disgrace.

No one deserves the condition he is now in, but he was an awful president. Matthews is such a smug sycophant - he's just an inch-deep concubine for the monied status quo. I don't know how he can look at himself in the mirror anymore.

42. I met Reagan once
Used to do corporate video and once got a gig to go shoot Reagan, Ford and Carter give a message of thanks to the outgoing Prez of the World Bank since none of those guys could make the meeting. Nixon did something else.

Anyway, Reagan was on the top floor of the Century Plaza building surrounded by 3-4 different types of security which was a major pain to get past even though I'd just had a six month background check performed by the SS. So I'm setting up the camera and telepropter, yes he needed it, and while I'm putting on his lav and feeling odd about getting an ex-president to remove his shirt. I lean in to his ear and ask him "So Ron, how's life treating you?" To which he responds "Ohhh fiiiine fiiine" in truly out of it style. Then his executive assistant shows up with a pitcher of icy cold water for him. It's visibly cold and the outside of the pitcher is frosted. She pours him a glass and hands it to him. He takes a sip and sets it down quickly then says "Oh my that's hot!"

After the shoot was done everybody split and left the old geezer sitting in the room. Reagan gets up, walks over to me (he loves cameras) puts his hand on my shoulder and asks me if he'd ever told me the story about the time he auditioned opposite John Barrymoore. I said I didn't think so so he steps back, starts to describe the audition then begins to sing and dance. No lie, I've sill got the field tape. I'd put a small hi-8 camera high on one of the C-stands and let it run the whole time - against instructions.

They told me that the shtick would be done in one take and not to run the 'real' camera one second more. As I recall it took about 5 takes to get a few paragraphs cleanly.

I decided right then that he had squat to do with becoming the president and likely didn't have a clue that he wasn't just acting most of the time. He struck me as the kinda guy that would make a pretty cool addled Uncle but was definitely not the Leader of the Free World, in spite of appearances.

Remember when he 'lost' his voice right in the middle of the Iran Contra hearings? His whole term was an acting gig.

Tape's safe, an old friend has it in a vault for me because I had a kind of nomadic streak at the time. Have camera will travel I used to say.

Long story short of the three prez's on that job:

1) Reagan - kindly old dodderer
2) Ford - cranky old snit
3) Carter - Peaceful, open, friendly guy. He was a bit nervous about the time we needed since he had to teach a class that night. As he said "I can't be late since Amy's in the class and that just wouldn't look good". Get that, he's more concerned about lecturing at his daughter's class then he is about the President of the World Bank. My kinda guy.

Carter is also the only one of these three to reject a lifetime Secret Service detail. I'm not sure if he had any security at all but I do know the Georgia Peach who was his assistant had the most inviting voice and demeanor- total foxy lady. Mmmmmmmmm, peaches. The whole gang at the Carter Center was the most hospitable group my producer and I came across on that gig. I've been fond of Georgia ever since.

55. I was a young teen during Reagan.
I didn't like him very much, even though I didn't know too much about him. And all the punk bands I liked despised him. :)

The only thing I noticed was how much the press focused on his love of jelly bellies.

59. To me Reagan will always be the guy who cut student loans.

I didn't like his policies, & I wouldn't wish Alzheimer's on anyone (my MIL has it, & it's a living hell), but at least he could form a coherent sentence & properly pronounce the word "nuclear."

I didn't actively despise him the way I despise that wretched no-talent ignoramus that Scalia et al. foisted on us. I can't wait for Boy George to crack up, which I think will happen between now & November.

61. That's why the idiot is a repub!
And must be too stupid to know it! If Tweety is a liberal, then I'm a Chinese Astronaut! He threw so many jabs at EVERY democrat candidate in his primary election coverage, that anyone who would believe Chris would EVER think like a liberal, is as stupid as Chris is! He never stopped beating up on our guys every time he opened his @#%# %$#@&* all night long! So how could anyone believe that the liar would ever think anything but, UNCLEAN GOPer thoughts!

I got so mad I just turned off my TV and I made up my mind to never watch NBC, or MSNBC again! Chris is a classic GOPer MOLE! How any thinking person could believe Chris is anything, but part of the Republicon/Rove propaganda team, is beyond all comprehension!

since he put him out of a job. That's what I told my husband last night. Then my DH asked me why I don't like Reagan. I told him that it was mainly because we were too far down on the food chain to benefit from any of his trickle down economics and it made it just too damned hard!!!

72. Second Worst President In 70 Years
His administration was horrible. An economic policy so flawed it almost ruined the country. An entire foreign and domestic policy based upon lies and an untenable fear of communism. (Like it was ever coming here!)

He was a terrible president and the longer time goes on, the lower historians will rate him, no matter how many buildings and ships have his name on them.

78. listening to Bruce Cockburn in my office, I am reminded
about what 8 years of Reagan were like.

Reagan was a terrible, evil, stupid man. I would never wish Alzheimer's on anybody but I find it very difficult- actually impossible- to feel compassion for one who caused the deaths of so many central americans in the name of stopping communism.

"if I had a rocket launcher..."

80. Tweety off the mark, as usual
Reagan is the one who kicked off this nightmare of deregulation and privitization. He is the reason people like Tweety have TV shows where they spew ignorance. Reagan is the one that started the downfall of American journalism by deregulating the FCC which allowed neanderthals like Murdoch to create Faux and turned CNN and all the others into neocon whores.

And the treasonous crime of Iran-Contra...need anyone say more. I'm sure Reagan didn't understand any of it because he was dumb as a rock, but, technically, he was still "in charge".

Since when do you get to tell us what we think?
I "like" Reagan because he is a human being but that is as far as it goes.
He was a fraud who caused much harm to our country. Just one example - his cuts were mostly responsible for the "deinstitutionalization" of many mentally ill people who ended up on the streets and many have died there and are still dying there.

86. I had my first suspicions about Tweety
back in 1992 when he insisted that "Potatoe" Quayle had done better than Gore in their debate - all Quayle did was rant and interrupt. If you all remember - that was also the debate where Perot's running mate, Admiral Stockdale said "Who am I and why am I here?" Still a good question for all of us to ask ourselves from time to time.
