I'm sorry, but Michael Powell..........
acts so white he makes Bryant Gumbel look like a Death Row hip-hop recording artist.

I know. That's rude. But still, Michael could at least pretend he has a little flava in him. Fake it or something.

1. Oh, I'm sure he has a little flava..
...but I'm not so sure we'd like it. It would probably be somewhere between licorice and vinegar.

3. Yes, black people should act black
Geez, what century am I living in and what "progressive" people are supposed to be discoursing here?

5. No
It's not "just" a joke. It's a jab at an individual and is part of the "uppity" stereotype that has infected the culture.

6. " 'uppity' stereotype"
Isn't "uppity" the word white racists use to describe black people who do things like: vote, make more money than them, not sit at the back of the bus, and looking at the white women?

8. Yes, and white racists that think a particular black
doesn't act black enough.

11. I think you're confusing "uppity" with "bland."
Maybe you're confusing web addresses too.

And I don't know much about Michael Powell, but if this is the head of the FCC, then I think the term "prude" would also be appropriate.

And I think "bland" also works for Bryant Gumbel.

But not for Hip Hop artists.

So I don't know where you're coming up with this racism crap. Nobody accused Powell of acting white. Or being an Uncle Tom. Or a race traitor.

But then again he is a republican.

And we all know what that means.

7. Why is it that so-called "liberals" can say the most stereotypical things
and expect a pass? I disagree with Clarence Thomas on almost everything. But I just want to jump in a hole when I hear today's "progressives" use little jokes and jabs and insinuations to smear the content of his character because he doesn't conform to the way blacks should think.

It's not funny, it's not innocent and it doesn't belong here.

9. Carl Spackler...
...I am black but I kinda know what Wetzelbil means. The problem is that Michael Powell isn't uppity enough in ways that count and do some good. He's too comfortable being part of the good ole boy network and he's an arrogant sonofabitch to boot. He could be as arrogant and uppity as he pleased if he were doing something good for this country and its people, but he's not--so fuck him.

12. Well I'm kind of burnt sienna
but don't expect that to mean I should act or believe in particular ways. I don't know Michael Powell from adam but saying that he's not black enough is going back about 50 years.

13. I didn't say he wasn't black enough.

I said he wasn't uppity enough in ways that could do good.. To some people successful and black equals uppity and Michael Powell is black and successful but he is selling this country out big time. I'd actually like for him to be uppity. Maybe it betrays a bit of racist thinking on my part but I'd like to see a black man in his position raising a little hell and not just going along and enjoying a good cigar while democracy in this country is in peril. DrWeird probably expressed it better when he described Powell as "bland". He is that but he's also too damned acquiescent.

10. Little Mikey appears to be really conservative
Just because he is African American doesn't mean that he has to understand that his people have been used and abused. I find it sad because he has such a powerful position. With that power, it would be helpful to have a person, whatever color, that would see that minorities have been tremendously hurt by his decisions. Equal Access for ALL doesn't appear to be in his vocabulary. MORE Than Equal Access for his dad's buddies is what he champions.

Shame on you Michael Powell!:puke:

15. Very racist comment.
I know you are joking but it is.

What does acting white mean?
What does acting "black" mean?

Better way of saying it is Poweel acts like a nerd. You don't need to inject race into the picture.

an "Oreo"
(black on the outside, white on the inside)

18. I should clarify and add
I am a Blackfeet Indian. What I'm doing here is making fun of a stereotype of a stereotype of what a minority - Blacks in this case - have come to be known as.

Wait. I even lost myself.

I should say too, that being a Black conservative makes Michael Powell a novelty and is good for his career. Black conservatives - like Clarence Thomas - are often opportunists who don't give a shit about anybody but themselves. Minority conservatives would knife their own people in the back just say they can look good and/or make a buck. I know people like this.

Really, I have no use for people like Michael Powell. Instead of doing some good and fighting for his people he's content to relish in his prominent position within the status quo.
