CNN: Glitch blamed for loud bang at Bush prayer breakfast
The headline in my subject line is the one on CNN's front page. Clicking it brings you to:

"Bush lauds troops' work in Iraq" (http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/02/05/bush.breakfast/index.html)

...but it is the same story.

"During the speech at the Washington Hilton Hotel, Bush paused briefly when a noise occurred that sounded like automatic weapon fire. The president did not mention the sound, and officials later said a glitch in the audio system was responsible."

"It was just simply a wacky interaction between wireless mikes and the sound system and nothing more," said White House deputy press secretary Trent Duffy following the speech. "It was not a 21-gun salute."

Yes, these are "wacky" times indeed. The accompanying photo shows Bush in what looks like a true Maalox moment...maybe he's reminding God that he already passed a landslide to Pat Robertson and since he's God he can't go back on his word.

I report, you decide.

3. Not Always... I've Heard Him Say "uh-PURSH-e-yate"
a couple of times when he's at his worst "mushmouth" phase (likely due to the alcohol kicking in... or DT's from alcohol withdrawal).

6. If I was religious

If I was religious, I'd ascribe the event as an omen. God is angry at Bush for causing unnecessary deaths!!!

Honestly though, I'm skeptical of this explanation. Nothing about wireless mikes "pulse" in a way that could cause such a noise. A digital system would cause pulses, but they would be WAAAY to frequent to sound like an automatic weapon.

The only thing that I can think of is if a mike got low on juice and way dropping in and out of contact. The dropped and regained signals could cause a "click" like noise similar to the one you here when someone picks up the extension on a telephone.

I need to submit this story to the geeks over at http://slashdot.org">Slashot. Maybe some audiophile over there has experience and can validate instances when this has happened to them.

7. "Motorboating". Common problem with wireless mikes.
If they had (like all good A-V departments should) a "Diversity" receiver or multiple receivers to ensure good pick-up the receivers could have gotten into a tussle w/each other.

Or a SS Goon might have been transmitting too close to a RX, causing some front-end overload.

10. Headline: Bush Admin believes in the Big Bang Theory, Pat Robertson Faints

Maybe it was a wardrobe malfunction.. someone tried to tape a "liar" sign on Bush's back and was shot.
