Sex offender justice??
ABC's Nightline is discussing sex offenders right now. Haven't seen it all but it made me think of something that bothers me.
Side note...1)Sex crimes are among the worst of all things humans do to each other. 2)I believe prison is for rehabilitation, not just punishment. 3)Public safety is hugely important. 4)I don't think people should be labeled/tracked/registered/vilified if let out of jail.

Here's my question. If Megan's Law(s) (registered, released felons) are necessary i.e. felons are LIKELY to re-offend, why let them out of prison at all??

Thoughts?

should have their penis removed and sewn on their forehead. Easy to identify them that way. No need for a database.

4. Yeah, that would remove any doubt, wouldn't it?
Sort of a scarlet penis.

3. This is a tough one for me.
Yeah, sex offenses are among the worst things humans can do to one another. But isn't jail for rehab? Aren't sex offenders who aren't in jail anymore free of their debt to society? Why don't murderers have to register? Wouldn't you like to know if a convicted murderer was living next to you? A convicted gun-runner? Etc?

On the other hand, if it's true that a sex offender is likely to commit a similar crime later, it would be nice to know if one was in the neighborhood. But if that's the case, why aren't they still in a facility that would keep them away from the general public? Is it impossible to reform them? I find that hard to believe.

I don't know the answer. I see the logic behind the registration for sex offenders, but I don't know if it's right. These things follow offenders around for the rest of their lives. Maybe that's not a bad thing, maybe it's unconstitutional. I really can't decide.

5. I'm troubled too
As I understand it, it applies to one time offenders as well as serial pedophiles. (May depend on State) Maybe some kind of home imprisonment after suitable jail term? I really don't know either and hoped some fellow DUers might have seen this kind of thread before. I've seen a lot of well thought out post in my short time here.

6. Way I figure it . . .
. . . castrate 'em. You gotta get their balls. After that, I don't know if Megan's Law, a Scarlet Letter, or even jail is necessary or not. It ain't about rehabilitatin'. The problem isn't that they've been raised wrong or got some weird notions of right and wrong in society, the problem is whatever urge or attraction they have towards children. That isn't something you can rehabilitate out of them and that's why so many are serial offenders.

Now, for rapist and other type sex offenses, I don't know. I'd probably be ok for castration for most of them too, at least the violent rapists.

8. "We gotta get your balls."
From Fight Club. The three cops tell it to Ed Norton in the police station.

10. Castration good for male rapists, but...
what about females? Lots of little boys and girls are molested by females.
