I missed my chance to see David Frum.
Edited on Wed Feb-04-04 10:32 PM by rockymountaindem
I am a freshman student at the University of Toronto (Canada, eh?). I am in a political science class with 900 students which is taught by a famous Canadian political/media figure, Janus Stein. As a result, our class gets its own TV show. Well, kinda. Here's the deal, we get 4 shows this year on TVO (Canadian PBS) where there's a "distinguished panel" and the audience is made of students from my class. The panel talks and then we get to ask questions. BTW, it's a live show.

The third program was tonight, and the topic was the privacy vs. security debate. I was unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict with a club meeting. My arch conservative room mate went, though. He came back and said "Guess who was at the TV show". David F*cking Frum! I guess he has nothing better to do these days than to come on Canadian public TV and spread his views to a bunch of freshmen poli-sci students and the 3 people watching at home. In a way, that's comforting... from the Boy King's ear to a small studio with 100 Canadian teens. Buwa ha ha ha ha!!!

Anyway, after my roomie told me he was there, my response was "Good thing I wasn't there, I would have puked all over the floor! How lucky was everyone that I was busy!?" On the other hand, I did miss my chance to say "Hey, Mr. Frum... way to disgrace my country and make us all look like a bunch of small-minded fundamentalists. You are a humiliation to our country and the sooner you are all out of a job, the better!" That would have been righteous, but on the other hand, what if he had reacted like Novak? I'd be down at the hospital right now, taking advantage of that social health system!

What might have been...

Edited for redundancy is why I edited my post.

1. You evidently know nothing about David Frum.
He's one of the good guys, if you'd bother to read any of his books.

Try starting with "Dead Right", in which he excoriates all manner of hypocritical, right-wing bullshit.

You're welcome.

2. Isn't he they guy who put "axis of evil" in the SOTU?
Those three divisive words blackened our image all over the world. I want nothing to do with him.

7. Isn't Bush the moron who abused that phrase?
Like I said: try actually reading his books. He is rhetorically quite gifted, employs an obviously substantial literary style, cites and interprets real numbers, data, programs and expenditures and isn't a bore.

Much worse could be said of innumerable writers who label themselves Democrats.

3. David Frum Is Bigger, Fatter, More Idiotic Than Rush
I listen to him every week on the show Left Right And Center, does anybody listen to that? From KCRW here in L.A., left is Robert Scheer & Center is Matt Miller, they also have my Gov Candidate, ex-GOP-er Arianna Huffington

That book he just wrote with GAK Richard Perle? UGH! Who the hell would read THAT?

Not to mention his smoochy GWB "biography."

9. Robert Scheer "Center"? Like Mao was a "Populist"
Fah, it is to laugh.

Not to mention his smoochy GWB "biography."

Here's a suggestion: try actually reading something he's written.

Or, if you can't be bothered, try actually knowing what you're talking about before speaking.

I've read his biography of GWB: it rips Bush and, while Frum maintains he quit the WH, and the WH house maintains he was 'fired', both speak well for the man.

As for Perle: That book he just wrote with GAK Richard Perle? UGH! Who the hell would read THAT?

I don't know.... but who would be so foolish as to comment on something he/she hasn't read?

17. Fah? I Guess You Have The Entire Ann Coulter Library as Well?
First of all I said in my post that Scheer was LEFT on left, right and center. Matt Miller is Center and Frum is Right of Mussolini.

Scheer routinely "deconstructs" or rather decimates Frum's arguments which more often than not sound flat-out insane. Heard he & co-auther "Prince Of Darkness" Perle hawking the book they wrote to HAHAHA End Evil. They are nothing if not ambitious! Their prescription for Ending Evil is: war, war and more war.

So Frum says he quit but the WH says he was fired? Well sounds like he's in the Lying Liars club to boot!

Tell me the best argument Frum ever had, since you are such a fan. I know he thinks the Iraq War is glorious in the extreme!

5. maybe so, but in Canada ...
... many of us view him as a bit of a sellout. He writes regular pieces for the National Post that scold Canadians for being ungrateful and disobedient when Dubya makes his supposedly-reasonable demands to "harmonize" our foreign, military, and economic policies with the current White House. Perhaps he was more even-handed in earlier times, but since 9/11 I've noticed that he has really jumped on board Bush's bandwagon. Getting canned as a speechwriter, if anything, has intensified his adoration of Dubya.

If, as you say, he's been slamming right-wingers for BS -- I would certainly hope so, because his mom Barbara was a respected journalist and could give merciless interviews at times. Alas, David and his sister Linda haven't really followed in her footsteps -- Linda did a supposedly-impartial university rating guide that was later revealed to have been based on bogus sampling, i.e. she phoned up a couple of friends-of-friends at each campus, and didn't even bothering visiting many of them although she implied she'd done so. (I have it on good authority that mother Barbara was a very difficult person to work for -- you didn't want to get on her wrong side -- but she was very talented and widely trusted in Canada for her persistence.)

My enemy's enemy isn't necessarily my friend!

14. Well, golly, I guess the whole family's a write-off.
Oh, hold on a sec...

Nah. David, like I said, is a good writer. A damned good, consistent and facts-specific writer.

It's just that it's extraordinarily difficult to deconstruct either his positions or his works without actually having read them.

18. Can You Tell Me WHAT His Good Arguments Are?
As I've heard him debate many times and never heard one yet. Do his books directly contradict his Bush-smooching speeches?

15. I know he can sit across a desk with Richard Perle
and write a book with him, and listen to him fart and belch.

The fact that the guy could be in the same room with Richard Perle makes him right up there with the guy who pulls the used condoms out of the sewage at the water treatment plant.

Disgusting.

16. "One of the good guys?" - I've read Frum's books.
Believe me, he's one of the most dangerous men in North America, precisely because he is intelligent and manipulative. He's certainly convinced you. Don't be taken in by this snake.

4. What's It All Aboot?
Yeah wassup with this Canadian David Frum rah-rahing all sorts of wars for the US? I guess he doesn't have to pay for any of them or fight any of them! I can't stand that guy.

Hey I heard Montey Hall was rooting for Joe Lieberman...seriously! Now that he's out of it he'll have to take what's behind Cutain Number 2...lol!

6. David Frum
I have not read Dead Right but since it was written a few years ago maybe that was before David Frum morphed into this bloated Bush NeoCon ass kisser.

He was hated up here in Canada when he was writing for the Sun and he is just as hated today. Didn’t he get the boot because his wife/girlfriend (Boy do I feel sorry for her) blabbed that he came up with the Axis of Evil tag line and Bush did not want that to be too well known?

I would have thrown up on if I saw him speak as well. Actually I would have thrown up on him.

It’s a shame because I admired his mom a lot as a journalist.

8. Welcome to DU!
And thank you for the support. I didn't know Frum was Canadian, I guess that makes his supposed fall from the WH to TVO more acceptable.

11. a plus -- you won't be lamenting about the hours of your life ...
... spent listening to Mr. Frum, that you wouldn't be getting back!

I, too, would have had the impulse to do a "Bush Sr." on him ... except that it would be such a waste of a meal.

13. Interesting Handle
I hope you are not referring to me. I can assure you that I have finally found a home after trolling the internet in some crappy political forums. I was originally registered as LasVegasCanuck but could not get my password/email sorted out.

I would hope to get a warmer reception for my very first post. :)
