60 Minutes II didn't call Powell a liar just now.
They simply made the conclusion inescapable.

A man of honor would resign tomorrow.

Bet the lying lapdog Powell doesn't.

3. Powell was told
no, the tubes were not for nuclear processing
no, the satellite pictures did not prove WMD programming
no, the trucks were just fire trucks

But Powell used all this any way. WOW!

13. so the question arises
Why? Why did he knowingly lie?
Of course he wasn't acting as a loose cannon he must have had a directive.

I suppose Cheney and Bush will try to hang him out to dry too, but Bush also presented some of those same falsehoods. Did no one bother to tell him the aluminum tubes were not for WMD?

because he is a RW errand boy. has been his entire career.

he is totally devoid of the 'honor and integrity' it take to take a stand and do the right thing.

I was inferring that I don't think he took it upon himself to decide this, thus the next obvious question who directed him? (of course we know it probably came from Cheney)

Edited on Wed Feb-04-04 08:50 PM by aquart
Sixty Minutes interviewed the high security clearance guys who told Powell it was all bunk and one of them had the line of the day: "Faith-based Intelligence" because he believes the decision was made to go to war and the intel was tailored to fit that conclusion.

It was a slaughter.

9. Short summary
Greg Tiellman(sp?), Powell's senior WMD intelligence analyst, said Powell was told a year before his prewar speech that there were no WMD in Iraq. Was told that the tubes were not for nuclear processing and was told that the satellite pictures were not proof of any WMD programs. Greg said part of the blame should be on the intelligence, but the major blame should be on the senior officials.

He also talked about the Chalabi intelligence group.

Good program. Just one year too late.

12. That's right
Also, that scientist who examined the tubes for Powell said that he knew no weapons expert who would ever say the tubes would work in a nuclear program, they would leak. So Powell lied when he said there was some expert dispute. The only one that disputed it was Bush&Co.

17. I didn't realize til early last summer..............
that this was the reason that Isreal hadn't attacked Iraq before we could invade. Isreal will attack any neighbor that it considers a threat.

The Isrealis don't have War Resolutions or petition the UN for support or debate for weeks on end whether or not to invade or attack. If Isreal feels threatened, Isreal defends itself - and they don't care much about their image, either. Isreal could pretty much give less than a damn about a Zogby or Gallup Poll.

Isreal knew that Iraq wasn't a threat. I'd bet my last bit of money that their intelligence on their Arab neighbors is more accurate than the rest of the world's intelligence combined.

Impeach the bastard, already!

Powell was Under Pressure to Use Shaky Intelligence on Iraq: Report
Agence France Presse

Friday 30 May 2003

US News and World Report magazine said the first draft of the speech was prepared for Powell by Vice President Richard Cheney's chief of staff, Lewis "Scooter" Libby, in late January.

According to the report, the draft contained such questionable material that Powell lost his temper, throwing several pages in the air and declaring, "I'm not reading this. This is bullshit."

Cheney's aides wanted Powell to include in his presentation information that Iraq has purchased computer software that would allow it to plan an attack on the United States, an allegation that was not supported by the CIA, US News reported.

The White House also pressed Powell to include charges that the suspected leader of the September 11 hijackers, Mohammed Atta, had met in Prague with an Iraqi intelligence officer prior to the attacks, despite a refusal by US and European intelligence agencies to confirm the meeting, the magazine said.

The pressure forced Powell to appoint his own review team that met several times with Central Intelligence Agency Director George Tenet and national security adviser Condoleezza Rice to prepare the speech, in which the secretary of state accused Iraq of hiding tonnes of biological and chemical weapons.

US News also said that the Defense Intelligence Agency had issued a classified assessment of Iraq's chemical weapons program last September, arguing that "there is no reliable information on whether Iraq is producing and stockpiling chemical weapons."

However, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told Congress shortly after that that the Iraqi "regime has amassed large, clandestine stockpiles of chemical weapons, including VX, sarin, cyclosarin, and mustard gas," according to the report.

42. "I'm not reading this. This is bullshit." - REPORTED JUNE '03
Powell's doubts over CIA intelligence on Iraq prompted him to set up secret review
Specialists removed questionable evidence about weapons from draft of secretary of state's speech to UN
Suzanne Goldenberg in Washington and Richard Norton-Taylor
Monday June 2, 2003
The Guardian

Fresh evidence emerged last night that Colin Powell, the US secretary of state, was so disturbed about questionable American intelligence on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction that he assembled a secret team to review the information he was given before he made a crucial speech to the UN security council on February 5.

Mr Powell conducted a full-dress rehearsal of the speech on the eve of the session at his suite in the Waldorf Astoria, his New York base when he is on UN business, according to the authoritative US News and World Report.

Much of the initial information for Mr Powell's speech to the UN was provided by the Pentagon, where Paul Wolfowitz, the US deputy defence secretary, set up a special unit, the Office of Special Plans, to counter the uncertainty of the CIA's intelligence on Iraq.

Mr Powell's team removed dozens of pages of alleged evidence about Iraq's banned weapons and ties to terrorists from a draft of his speech, US News and World Report says today. At one point, he became so angry at the lack of adequate sourcing to intelligence claims that he declared: "I'm not reading this. This is bullshit," according to the magazine.

Presented with a script for his speech, Mr Powell suspected that Washington hawks were "cherry picking", the US magazine Newsweek also reports today. Greg Theilmann, a recently retired state department intelligence analyst directly involved in assessing the Iraqi threat, says that inside the Bush administration "there is a lot of sorrow and anger at the way intelligence was misused".

45. Was this program a rerun?
or delayed until now?

Asking because this article written on Wed. 15 Oct 2003 covers almost everything Mr. Thielman said on the program tonight - and makes a reference to the program being aired-

----------

>snip< Mr Thielmann made the claims on the CBS 60 Minutes II programme, which will be shown on US television tonight.

He said: “I think my conclusion (about Powell’s speech) now is that it’s probably one of the low points in his long distinguished service to the nation.

“The main problem was that the senior administration officials have what I call faith-based intelligence.

“They knew what they wanted the intelligence to show.

“They were really blind and deaf to any kind of countervailing information the intelligence community would produce.”
http://news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=2055017

----------

Note: if you don't get a chance to watch the program, this article is definitely worth a read.

50. Do they have something on Powell?
I remember rumors about Powell possibly resigning several years ago. Suddenly he stayed put.

I can't stand what Powell has done, but out of everyone in Bush's evil admin, he is the only one that slips up and tells the truth every now and then.

He said there were probably no WMDs in 2001, he said the same thing the other day. He obviously didn't even want to bother with presenting the evidence to the UN. He also was the only one in the admin who wanted to use diplomacy rather than race into Iraq.

His collaboration in this right-wing conspiracy does not fit the positive image I had formed of him in the past (while seeing him on MTV, etc.). Hopefully he will redeem himself by coming forward in late October and exposing all of W's lies.

Then I remember all the dead; the maimed children in Iraq; the loss of the antiquities of that country; the US and allied soldiers who will come back changed people; the suicides; and much more.

All those remembrances make it impossible for me to rejoice.

It's time for some justice.
