Scouts' pick as speaker is patriot and partisan--Ollie North
now there's a role model for our youth--shred the Constitution and then lie about it!

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/7868259.htm

Four years ago, the Boy Scouts lost much of their local financial support by upholding a nationwide ban against gay Scouts. The avowedly apolitical group found itself widely shunned by liberals and embraced by conservatives.

Now, regrouping with the largest single fund-raising event in its history, the Scouts' South Florida Council is turning to Oliver North.

The keynote speaker planned for Thursday's fundraiser at the Signature Grand in Davie is a polarizing figure: retired Marine lieutenant colonel, decorated war hero, right-leaning radio host and central figure in the Iran contra arms-for-hostages scandal of the 1980s.

1. You know I was a Boy Scout once
It is a geeat opportunity for boys. Too bad the organization is at the mercy of the Mormon Church when it comes to it's policies on gays. However, for a Scout Group to actually turn to Oliver North is just disgusting. I am sick of Conservatives trying to adopt every wholesome American thing as their own.

5. I beg to differ
The only "bad" thing about Scouts is that they want you to have a religion and not be gay. They are the kings of don't ask don't tell. Behave yourself, learn, and have a good time, but don't out yourself there. However, there is much speculation as to whether Lord Baden-Powell was gay himself (I think he was, along with a lot of other Scouters).

The reason I got my kids involved in Scouting is because so very much of it is based on the skills and much of the social structure employed by Native American tribes and their natural environmentalist viewpoint. Isn't it ironic?

As you can tell, Bush never aspired to be a Scout. I will be proud of my children for living up to these ideals and don't see much about Hitler anywhere in here.

Trustworthy
A Scout tells the truth. He keeps his promises. Honesty is part of his code of conduct. People can depend on him.

Loyal
A Scout is true to his family, Scout leaders, friends, school, and nation.

Helpful
A Scout is concerned about other people. He does things willingly for others without pay or reward.

Friendly
A Scout is a friend to all. He is a brother to other Scouts. He seeks to understand others. He respects those with ideas and customs other than his own.

Courteous
A Scout is polite to everyone regardless of age or position. He knows good manners make it easier for people to get along together.

Kind
A Scout understands there is strength in being gentle. He treats others as he wants to be treated. He does not hurt or kill harmless things without reason.

Obedient
A Scout follows the rules of his family, school, and troop. He obeys the laws of his community and country. If he thinks these rules and laws are unfair, he tries to have them changed in an orderly manner rather than disobey them.

Cheerful
A Scout looks for the bright side of things. He cheerfully does tasks that come his way. He tries to make others happy.

Thrifty
A Scout works to pay his way and to help others. He saves for unforeseen needs. He protects and conserves natural resources. He carefully uses time and property.

Brave
A Scout can face danger even if he is afraid. He has the courage to stand for what he thinks is right even if others laugh at or threaten him.

Clean
A Scout keeps his body and mind fit and clean. He goes around with those who believe in living by these same ideals. He helps keep his home and community clean.

Reverent
A Scout is reverent toward God. He is faithful in his religious duties. He respects the beliefs of others

3. Ollie North IS NO PATRIOT!!!
Edited on Wed Feb-04-04 05:03 PM by DemXCGI
The son of a bitch LIED to Congress and sold weapons to damn terrorists!

The man is a traitor to this country, and it's only because of the "liberal" media :eyes: that he's even out of prison and has a job on talk radio. That, and that damn technicality.

6. That article linked says Ollie is a war hero.
There is no truth to that is there?

The decline of Scouting into a right wing political organization is genuinely heartbreaking to watch.

8. It's worse...
Specific Councils have invited Ann Coulter, Ollie North and that jackass
General Boykin who said 'Our Gawd is Bigger than Your Gawd'.

Who knew that the film Red Dawn (which features a scene when
the evil commie commander questions a father about his son's
membership in the 'paramilitary fascist organization, the Boy
Scouts') would come true (but not in a good way)?

I was a Boy Scout (Eagle Scout, 1981) in the 70's. I bailed quickly
after earning Eagle because our new, bible thumper Scoutmaster
was big on my Towing The Line about being 'Reverent' enough
(for HIM; Baden Powell wasn't quite as theocratic...). I've thought
several times about 'throwing my medals' (ala Kerry), back in their
faces because of their creeping Hitler Youth movements both
politcally and financially. I'm not actually sure where they are
(mom's attic?) though and at least they (BSA) doesn't hunt me
down like a dog and beg for money like my big ass State U.

Like far right racist church universities, they desperately want to
suck on the government teat (with such things like prime real
estate for campgrounds for $1/year), but despeately want the
right to f*cking discriminate against everyone they wish
(unquestionably unConstitutional).

Don't take the f*cking money if you want to be jerkoffs! What's that,
you NEED the (free) money? THEN PLAY BY THE EQUAL JUSTICE FOR
ALL RULES you cowards and hypocrites! Oh, and STOP SUCKING UP
TO *REAL* FASCISTS.

9. Scouts learn that it's "heroic" to break the laws?
Now, regrouping with the largest single fund-raising event in its history, the Scouts' South Florida Council is turning to Oliver North.

It does sound as if this is just the South Florida contingent and not the entire nationwide group, but it does say a lot about how scouting has changed over the years. It's really sad, but seems as if a generation of nice little boys are learning all the wrong stuff.
