Please Help Me Regarding GW Bush's 1978 Congressional Race
Edited on Wed Feb-04-04 03:31 PM by David Zephyr
I am searching for a "lost" but politically explosive printed flyer from Bush's 1978 failed Congressional campaign in West Texas.

There was a flyer with the photo of young Bush next to a fighter jet with a caption claiming that Bush had flown fighter jets either during or in the Vietnam War.

In other words, one could easily be misled by the caption under the photo that Bush had actually been in Vietnam.

This campaign flyer has now seemed to have been scrubbed away.

In light of the AWOL story finally getting its just and overdue exposure, I think that this misleading campaign flyer would be extremely damaging to Bush now more than ever before.

Has anybody here seen it, remember it, or hopefully still has a link to it?

Help.

2. I recall reading that there was a flyer
Edited on Wed Feb-04-04 03:43 PM by madaboutharry
on which it was stated that Bush had served in the Air Force. It was then later revised. This was written about in a book, but I can't recall which one. It may have been in "Shrub," Maybe someone knows.

On edit: Fortunate Son by J.H. Hatfield addresses this issue.

6. Thanks Madaboutharry, But This Is Not It, Either.
Although, it does go right to the same vein of exaggeration and it would be powerful to also get this ad from the newspaper.

I have "The Fortunate Son" and the photo of him and the jet.

But it's his campaign flyer that is so over the top.

9. is this the same flyer that implied he was born in Midland?
(They don't reproduce it here, but there's a quote that is sneakily similar in its imprecision ...)

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/campaigns/wh2000/stories/bush072999.htm

Four days before the runoff, Reese produced a copy of Bush's birth
certificate and accused Bush of omitting the fact that he was born in New
Haven. A Bush aide insisted it was an error of "punctuation" – not
deliberate deception. The brochure had said: "Born July 6, 1946 and
raised in Midland, Texas."

10. Thanks, Lisa. The Campaign Literature Has All Disappeared.
Something's just too screwy here. Did Rove have it all vacuumed up?

There was a time 3 years ago when Bush' 1978 campaign lit was all over the internet and now...poof! All gone.

I spent three hours early this morning searching. Nothing.

Help!

12. check newspaper achives
Often a campaign poster will also be run as a newspaper ad. Many libraries have newspapers on microfilm or microfiche and you can print from the microfilm readers. Plus you would have a source and nobody could claim it was a photoshop creation.

15. try interlibrary loan
You may be able to get the stuff sent to a library near you. Or if there is a DU'er in the vicinity, they could scroll through the microfilms.

16. Hey, David, I bet you're on to something!
Remember when he made that comment about how he'd gone to war and he'd raised twins and going to war was easier?
http://www.hereinreality.com/commander.html

It's interesting that you're focusing on *lying on a document (campaign flyer). The Daily Howler yesterday focused on the torn document that various media (and * and his staff) have used to either support *'s contention that he made up his guard service or who know about the torn document but don't even mention it for some reason.

The Daily Howler contends that that is what we should be focusing on--the torn document--but that one reason why the media either mentions it or doesn't is that none of them wants to investigate or comment on its validity (with a ten-foot pole). After all, what if it comes out that Georgie has been using a fraudulent document to support his claims?
