I'm officially a democrat now!!!
Edited on Wed Feb-04-04 02:21 AM by brainwashed_youth
Alright, sorry for the excessive caps mods, didn't see that rule. Alright, just to recap. I'm mailing my voter card 2morrow to change my party from republican to democrat. If you saw my post earlier today, you know I was worried about what my repub parents would think about me switching. They were fine with it and I'm an idiot for being so worried

Ahhh...feels so good finally being an official Democrat.

6. Wise choice..............
I too came from a very Conservative family and saw the error of my ways at an early age. My daughter often remarks that she can't believe that I'm a member of the same family, so different are our ideologies. It's great to be part of the left, right?

7. Great, Brainwashed Youth!
Edited on Wed Feb-04-04 02:41 AM by jchild
Ya know, lots of us grew up with Republican parents. There's nothing wrong with that. We just assumed that we would follow them in their party choice, but as we grew older, we grew uncomfortable with what the party stood for. And we switched, with our parents' blessings.

I haven't ever revealed this on DU, but when I turned 18 and became politically active, I told my father that I wanted to be a Democrat.

Ya know what he said? He said, "I don't care which party you vote for. All I care is that you go vote."

Some folks at DU talk really badly about Republicans, but just remember that not all Republicans are evil--your parents and my parents have their reasons for choosing their party, just like you and I have our reasons for being Democrats.

The cool thing is that your Republican parents are open-minded enough to allow you room to grow and make decisions on your own. That they gave you their blessings tells me that they are really great folks and you are lucky to have them.

:toast: to B_Y and to your parents!

8. That is nice. I'm glad your folks are OK with it. It matters
since all we really have is family. Sure it's all well and good to care about others but at the end of the day...

I feel like I lucked out as my family has always been liberal and Democratic ever since my gramp jumped ship in NY and never went home to Denmark.

I guess you just one up'd me. You jumped ship too.

Welcome!

11. best bonding moment w/my dad...
...was this summer - we were taking a road trip together and he said to me "Republicans are Evil" - ha, ha, ha.

Kinda funny to have such a surreal moment together. We'd been talking political current events for an hour, and he said this out of the blue, during a lull in the conversation.

14. Repubs
"just remember that not all Republicans are evil."

Many Repubs aren't. They are misguided. Neocons are evil.

16. Welcome home, brainwashed_youth!
My parents were GOP too, but I was always the black sheep.

Good for you for learning to think -- and act -- for yourself. You are a living example of democracy in action, exercising your right to declare your party affiliation by thinking things through on your own.

Now, if only the rest of the country would follow your lead!

Cheers! :toast:

18. Congratulations
For some reason I woke up in the middle of the night and when I was drinking my tea I thought of your post. I have 2 brothers and 3 sisters (all adults). My Mother and Father control them all with tears on my Mother's part--and stern coldness on my Father's part. My brothers and sisters used to joke about how I was the only one to free himself from them.

Good luck and be an informed voter (which is obviously what you are trying to be). And remember Dems need to earn you vote too.

21. Here's the difference in the parties
Edited on Wed Feb-04-04 09:03 AM by CreekDog
I volunteered on Bush I's 1988 campaign
(but wasn't old enough to vote for him)
later, I volunteered on Clinton's 1992 campaign

I phone banked for both, in the Republican campaign, I sat in a large ornate office in a comfy leather chair in front of a desk the size of my bedroom at home. The office was in a quiet office park.

In the Democrats campaign, I sat in a folding chair at a folding table packed with old ladies and (later in the day) trade union members getting off work, and students like me. The space was a busy but cramped rented space. The office was on a major boulevard in a blue collar suburb of SF.

I always remember that. Again and again, the only party that seemed to care about regular folks after election day was the Democratic Party. The Republicans had many logical arguments, but when in charge of a vast government and given the opportunity to help the truly needy, seemed out of ideas and out of compassion. But these traits were in abundance when their wealthy supporters wanted a favor.

The Democrats have their flaws, but I know that regular folks are not just window-dressing to them.

34. RIGHT ON CREEK DOG!
That is so true. That is what I can't forgive Ralph Nader for....that big "there is no difference between the parties" lie. Truly the Dems may not be as effective as I would like but don't say there's no difference in the parties!

Or should I say "Reformed Republican?"
:toast:

I, too, was a Republican (32 years ago). But that was during my years of "youthful indiscretion" so it doesn't matter.

28. Congratulations!
I did the same thing a few months ago, but I was
a lifetime Independent. I finally decided that
I felt too passionately about the issues to be
objective anymore or ever again.

I sometimes wonder if being Independent is good
at all. Being objective and lacking passion is
cold and detached, like having a lover who always
takes and never gives. Independents sit back and
wait to be courted and worked for instead of having
convictions and causes for which they feel compelled
to support.

Just a thought....
